We Tried Sofia Vergara's Go-To Workout...and Couldn't Walk for a Week
We might not be able to live in a 15-room mansion or go on an exclusive, private island vacation, but we can sweat like our favorite celebrities. Here, six types of workouts some of the most in-shape celebs swear by—that you can try, too.
Boxing: Adriana Lima
Boxing is everywhere right now, and for good reason. In addition to being a killer full-body workout, it’s also a next-level stress reliever. Brazilian supermodel Lima has been throwing punches for years now, and clearly, it’s working. In NYC, she frequents The Dogpound, Gotham Gym and Aerospace, which is, hands down, one of our favorite workouts in the city.
Megaformer Pilates: Sofia Vergara
How does the Modern Family star get her killer bod? Sessions on her Megaformer (basically, a Pilates torture device). Trust us, this is one of the hardest workouts we’ve ever done, and we fully stand behind the description of this workout as “Pilates on crack.” If you dare, you can try it at studios around the country, like SLT in New York, Studio Metamorphosis in L.A. and Body R+D in Chicago.
Indoor Cycling: Lea Michele
SoulCycle, Flywheel, Peloton. Spinning isn’t new, per se, but it doesn’t show any signs of slowing down. Don’t believe us? Try a 45-minute class and we guarantee you’ll be drenched beyond belief and marveling at the number of calories you torched. Add to that some A-plus playlists and a pitch-black room (so no one can see how gross we look) and we're still on the spin train.
Weight Training: Alison Brie
If you haven’t seen the new Netflix series Glow, you’re missing out on two things: a really fun show and the incredible body of star Alison Brie, who—gasp—does all of her own stunts. We chatted with her longtime trainer, Jason Walsh, who told us the secret to her trim but toned physique is focusing on lifting heavy weights versus constant cardio. To break up all the lifting, Brie also peppers in outdoor hikes and 30-minute climbing classes at Walsh’s L.A. studio Rise Nation.
Barre: Alessandra Ambrosio
We might not have the body of a Victoria’s Secret angel, but that doesn’t mean we can’t train like one. Ambrosio is a huge fan of barre classes, which are available pretty much everywhere at nationwide studios like Pure Barre, Flybarre and Physique57. Expect small movements repeated so many times in a row that your muscles will be quivering…and sore for a few days afterward.
Yoga: Zoe Saldana
Sure, yoga might not be as buzzy as, say, boxing, but that doesn’t mean it’s not still a go-to for, like, one in three celebs. The beauty of this workout is that you can go as hard or easy as you like, since the different types of yoga—including Hatha, Ashtanga and Bikram—are so distinct from one another. We can feel ourselves getting zen-er (and fitter) already.
