Starting a conversation on a dating app can be tricky. You don’t have the benefit of being face-to-face, so you want to make sure your tone is friendly, fun and inviting without coming across as too excited. That’s why Hinge—the dating app more oriented towards relationships than hookups—gives you a hand with their fun prompts.

Hinge prompts allow you to showcase your personality outside of your standard bio, taking some of the awkwardness out of starting a conversation. (Not to mention give you an opportunity to hardball—aka say exactly what you’re looking for.) After combing through 105 Hinge prompts, I picked my ten favorites that have been good conversation starters for me on the app. I also spoke with Amie Leadingham, Master Certified Relationship Coach, and Logan Ury, Hinge’s Director of Relationship Science, about their tips for building a strong profile.

best hinge prompts: two truths and a lie
PureWow

1. Two truths and a lie…

  • My answer: I can drive stick, I speak French and I was an ice dancer

When I was on Hinge, this prompt got me a fair amount of interaction. I like that it can pique someone’s curiosity and is a natural conversation starter. They don’t have to think of something to say or ask, they simply have to guess what I’m lying about.

best hinge prompts: one thing i'd like to know about you

2. One thing I’d love to know about you is…

  • My answer: Who is your closest friend or family member?

While the majority of Hinge prompts are meant to share information about yourself, I like an opportunity to deflect a question to the other person. This is a good way to ask something that might reveal whether your priorities line up. For example, I believe that partners should have healthy relationships outside of their own, so it would be a concern to me if someone said they weren’t really close to any of their family or couldn’t name at least one close friend.

best hinge prompts: love language

3. My love language is…

  • My answer: French fries

A quick and easy point of connection that can be either earnest or facetious, depending on your mood. As it turns out, I eat an astonishing amount of French fries, so I need whoever dates me to know that I’m probably…going to eat theirs.

best hinge prompts: i want someone who
PureWow

4. I want someone who…

  • My answer: Values kindness, compassion and intellect

I like this prompt because it can be used a variety of ways—to see if people share your interests, values, hobbies and/or has a skill that you lack. If I were being more on-the-nose, I might amend my answer to wanting someone who can use a power drill. But in this instance, I wanted to do a vibe check and see if a potential match had the same values as me. (Arguably more important than their power-drilling skills.)

best hinge prompts: my favorite line from a movie
PureWow

5. My favorite line from a movie…

  • My answer: “You have bewitched me, body and soul, and I love you.”

I mean…if they don’t know where this quote comes from, I’m not sure the relationship is going to work out. (For the record, it’s Pride & Prejudice 2005.) Of course, I’m kidding. Take it as a way to tell someone about your cinematic tastes.

best hinge prompts: how to pronounce my name
PureWow

6. How to pronounce my name…

  • My answer: Muh-RISSA

My name is pretty easy to pronounce, so I don’t typically include this on my profile, but I do think it can help break the ice.

best hinge prompts: a life goal of mine
PureWow

7. A life goal of mine…

  • My answer: To publish a novel

Like many prompts, this could be lighthearted or serious. How you answer depends on your personality. My goal is important to me, and I want whoever I date to know that this is a big project that I will prioritize. Your answer, however, could be something you hope to do together. One of my other life goals is to drive down the French Riviera like Grace Kelly and Cary Grant in To Catch a Thief—and I’ll need a partner for that.

best hinge prompts typical sunday
PureWow

8. Typical Sunday…

  • My answer: Read, go on a walk, write, sit in the sun

This is an easy way to give someone a peek into how I spend my spare time and what I’m interested in. If they share my hobbies, then maybe it’s a match.

best hinge prompts: best travel story
PureWow

9. Best travel story…

  • My answer: Cycling on the side of a two-lane highway in Champagne and almost getting hit by a truck

A wild travel story is always a good conversation starter. Hopefully yours is less of a brush with death than mine was.

best hinge prompts: before we meet you should listen to
PureWow

10. Before we meet, you should listen to…

  • My answer: My “nostalgia” playlist on Spotify

I’m not a big fan of individual artists but rather collect songs that take me back to a certain moment with a certain person. I hope that anyone who listens to it gets a sense of who I am—and bonus points if they also like the songs, because car karaoke is one of my favorite pastimes.

The Best Hinge Prompts, According to Experts

At my present count, there are 105 Hinge prompts to choose from. The best Hinge prompts are really whatever you want to share. However, two experts I spoke with did dole out some general advice.

  • Skip the small talk. “Your profile should be an extension of your personality, so lean in to both your silly side and your more serious one,” says Logan Ury, author of How to Not Die Alone and Director of Relationship Science at Hinge.
  • Get (a little) vulnerable. For example, a prompt like “Fact about me that surprises people” is a great way to burrow under the surface—skip the small talk. “Answering this prompt is excellent because it helps create some vulnerability and is a simple conversation starter,” says Master Certified Relationship Coach Amie Leadingham.
  • Don’t be afraid to hardball. When it comes to prompts like “I’m looking for…” Ury says, “It’s not a demand. [Ask] yourself, what’s going on for me right now? Do I want to be in a relationship? Am I looking for something fun? Do I have the time and energy to invest in a long-term partnership?”
  • Keep it positive. “Sticking to the positive is always a good thing for answering any online dating questions,” Leadingham says. Coming across as bitter or brutally honest will drive people away.
  • Make it easy to have a conversation.  “Think of your profile as your opening line—something your match can respond to or ask a follow-up question about,” Ury says.

How Do Hinge Prompts Work?

Hinge prompts are part of setting up your profile. After you’ve entered your name, narrowed down your location and set your preferences, the app gives you a chance to answer three prompts of your choice under the “Write Your Profile Answers” banner. All Hinge prompts have a 150-character limit, so the idea is to have short, pithy answers that you can elaborate on later. And the word “elaborate” is key here. As a writer and interviewer, I’d say I’m great at making conversation with almost anyone and about anything. However, monosyllabic answers and curt sentences are something even I can’t work with. So if you share something interesting on the app, get ready to dive into it on the date. Great conversation only happens when you pick one of the best Hinge prompts and then give people something to work with.

What Are Voice Prompts?

Voice prompts are the platform’s 30-second audio clips, which people can use to answer a question. Hinge has found that daters prefer voice prompts as a way to get to know a person better before meeting up in real life. To add a voice prompt, go to your profile and find it underneath the photo lineup. You can choose from the general prompt bank of over 100 questions, including “believe it or not, I…” and “I’m convinced that...”. You have 30 seconds to make your case, and other daters can play the clip as they peruse your profile.
