Watch Serena Williams’s Empowering Bumble Super Bowl Spot

The ball is in Serena Williams’s court, and not by accident.

The 37-year-old athlete/designer/new mom tracks her rise to tennis fame and the tenacity that got her there in a brand-new commercial that debuted during Super Bowl LIII for dating app Bumble.

In the seriously inspiring spot, Williams recalls her experience as a young girl from Compton, California, vying for court time in a predominately WASPy sport. As she says in a voiceover over footage of a young girl doing just that, “If I wanted to be invited in, I never would have stood out. If I waited for change to happen, I never would have made a difference.”

So what does she suggest? “Make the first move,” not only in love and dating, but in all aspects of life. You want that promotion? Go for it. You want to make a change? Do it. You want to connect with someone? Make it happen.

Williams shared the commercial on Instagram and captioned it with the same words she spoke in the video: “Don’t wait to be told your place. Take it. Don’t wait for people to find you. Find them—in work, in love, in life—on @bumble. #InHerCourt.”

Although Bumble started as a dating app, it’s since grown to include app-based networking and a platform to meet new friends. In addition to Williams, the Whitney Wolf–founded company recently expanded to include actress Priyanka Chopra as a new adviser, investor and partner. Partnering with strong females to spread a message of empowerment? Now that’s practicing what you preach.

As Williams says at the close of the ad, “Don’t wait to be given power because here’s what they won’t tell you: You already have it.”

We’re filing that under words to live by.
