Meghan Markle Made a Quiet Visit to Uvalde & Surprised Volunteers at a Blood Drive

Meghan Markle isn't one to sit back and watch. In the aftermath of the tragic shooting that took place at a Uvalde, Texas, elementary school earlier this week, the Duchess of Sussex made a surprise visit to the town to pay her respects.

The duchess was spotted in Uvalde on Thursday afternoon, where she laid flowers at a memorial for the victims of the shooting. She then surprised volunteers at a local blood drive and donated food to the Herby Ham Activity Center.

Local volunteers discussed the unexpected visit with Buzzfeed News, where they revealed that Markle dropped off two crates full of sandwiches, drinks and desserts for the blood donors. “She was just really sweet,” said volunteer Georjean Burnell. “She just kind of walked in with her [security] crew and started putting ice waters in the bucket with us and laying out chips for the people who were needing snacks before and after donating.”

As seen in the photo above, she sported a gray T-shirt and jeans, along with a blue baseball cap.

Another volunteer, Gloria Contreras, revealed that she didn't even know who Markle was when the two struck up a friendly conversation. “We were just talking about, you know, the situation and what happened, what we were doing here,” she said. “I even talked about my personal life, telling her about my son and my family and, you know, coming to Texas because she told me she was from Santa Barbara and I said, ‘Well, you need to come to Texas!’”

According to a representative for the duchess, she wanted to offer “her condolences and support in person to a community experiencing unimaginable grief,” and she came “in a personal capacity as a mother.”

A very thoughtful gesture by Markle.
