When you think “sleeper sofa” do you picture a stiff, boxy and uncomfortable couch? Same—or at least I used to. It turns out there have been some major advances in the world of sleeper sofas over the last few years, and many of the newer designs are comfortable and—dare I say?—chic. Suddenly, turning your living room into a temporary guest room when the in-laws show up doesn’t seem like such a horrible idea.

To separate the gems from the duds, I had our editors put four of today’s most popular sleepers to the test—pulling them into their homes, hosting actual overnight guests and even sleeping on them themselves. Think: Everything from the TikTok-viral Article Sven Sofa (now available as a sleeper) to a Burrow Sleep Kit upgrade that’s a game-changer for apartment dwellers (or anyone on a budget). Ahead, find our honest reviews, complete with everything you’d want to know before hitting add to cart.

How We Tested Each Sleeper Sofa

Each editor filled out a detailed review form after living with their sleeper for several weeks. We scored every sofa on seating comfort, sleeper mattress comfort, ease of conversion, quality and durability, and overall value. We also documented the delivery and assembly process (Was it curbside or in-room? Did it require two people? Any funky odors on arrival?), as well as design and style (Did it look elevated or bulky? Was it practical for the space?). Finally, we noted the guest experience, asking whether anyone woke up with aches, if there were noticeable springs or pressure points, and how easy it was to fold the bed back in the morning.

ICYMI, TikTok can’t get enough of the Sven sofa—and now it comes in a sleeper that looks as design-forward in daylight as it feels genuinely comfortable at night. “The sofa is firm, which means the mattress won’t sag when unfolded and the cushions keep in place easily when in couch mode (no sliding or slanting),” notes Sally Herrod, Senior Director of SEO & Product, in a PureWow100 review. That firmness comes from high-density polyurethane foam and polyester fiber cushions that support without punishing, creating what she describes as a “sit-all-day kind of firm—structured, not stiff.”

Upholstered in a polyester-acrylic blend that’s abrasion-tested to more than double the industry standard, it’s also built for durability while still feeling refined. Sally tested the Biscuit Cream colorway (a woven neutral), but you can also opt for performance fabrics if you’ve got pets/kids or velvet for a moodier vibe. “The couch looks great, and it definitely doesn’t look like the typical sofa bed…[Love that] it has a tufted bench seat and comes with two cushions and two round bolsters.”

Plus, converting it is blissfully simple. “Just take off the cushions, grab the two tabs at the back of the couch and unfold the sofa bed base to lay flat on the ground. It takes 30 seconds and there are no heavy moving parts, mechanics, springs or anything like that,” Sally explains. Once extended, the 10-inch mattress (62" x 78.5") feels like a real bed, not a last-minute air mattress. “The sleeper mattress was super comfortable, and we had great reviews from guests who slept on it multiple nights,” she adds. The cushions are even stitched together with an extra panel to prevent gapping, so you don’t wake up rolling into the crack. And while the sofa arrives in one 176-pound piece, Sally chose white-glove service. “The delivery was seamless—they carried the sofa up two flights of stairs and assembled it in 15 minutes flat,” she shares. Just be sure to measure carefully. “We ended up removing our office door before the delivery arrived to ensure the sofa fit in the room.”

Most Functional Sleeper Sofa

2. Burrow Span Sleeper Sofa

What We Like

  • Multiple configurations (2-seater, single chaise, reversible sectional)
  • CertiPUR-US® queen mattress with cooling tech
  • Ultra-durable performance chenille upholstery in 5 shades
  • Chaise has built-in storage for bedding
  • Clean, modern design looks high-end

What We Don't Like

  • Cushions lean firm and supportive, not plush
  • Delivery requires maneuvering without an in-home setup

Burrow

Next up: a sleeper with multiple configurations—from a single chaise for a reading nook to a suped-up sectional with hidden storage on both ends. Executive Managing Editor Catrina Yohay tested the two-seater option, raving, “Remove the side and back cushions, grab the inside handle and pull the bottom cushion out. Voila, a queen-size bed! No springs or uncomfortable metal pieces to contend with.” It features a four-layer CertiPUR-US® foam mattress with cooling memory foam and a breathable jersey knit cover. “Our overnight guests said it was very firm but nice once you got used to it. There are no springs, and the cushions fold out onto the floor, so the weight of the bed and person in it are evenly distributed…no weird pressure points.”

But what really sold her? The tightly woven Performance Chenille upholstery, which is stain- and scratch-resistant. “The material is super durable, holding up impressively well to my dog's daily habit of scratching.” She adds, “I went with the navy blue fabric, which at first I was nervous about (I'm usually a beige/gray couch gal), but it's stunning and is surprisingly neutral. The darker fabric also hides a multitude of sins, from dog hair and mud-stained paws to coffee spills.”

That said, delivery and assembly require some forethought. “Our delivery person kindly helped bring it into the house, but after that you're on your own,” Catrina notes. “It definitely requires some muscles to move and unbox… I suggest unboxing and moving piece by piece.” Assembly is manageable, but she warns it’s best to free up an afternoon and enlist a second set of hands: “There are larger pieces and lots of little holes/joints to line up. The only setup hiccup was that we put the bottom cushion/bed piece on backwards, so had to unscrew and redo it—but that was more our error!” Once in place, she says, “I adore the style of this couch. It's clean, modern and looks high end. The sofa size is great for my space, creating a convenient sitting area for our multi-use playroom/office/hang out spot.” Though she admits, “It may not be the plushest couch, but it feels really solid, making me think it'll look good as new for years to come.”

Fast Facts

  • Dimensions: 94.5" W x 34.5" D x 34.5" H (multiple configurations available)
  • Fabric options: Performance Chenille in Navy Blue, Sage, Heather Charcoal, Crushed Gravel, Georgia Clay
  • Delivery: Curbside drop-off; assembly required

Best Sleeper Sofa for Small Spaces

3. Serta Ainsley Convertible Sleeper

What We Like

  • 72” width is ideal for apartments or home offices
  • Reveals a queen mattress inside
  • Dream Coil® springs + high-density foam cushions
  • Strong frame holds up to jumping kids
  • Velvet fabric in 5 color options

What We Don't Like

  • Cushions might be too firm for some
  • Heavy and bulky to move inside

Serta

If you’re short on square footage but still want a guest-ready bed, this sleeper is a workhorse in disguise. Built with a solid hardwood frame, high-density foam cushions and Serta’s signature Dream Coil® technology, it’s compact enough for small apartments (just 72.6 inches wide) yet still folds out into a true queen-size bed (60" x 78"). Executive Editor Alexia Dellner tested it, praising its supportive feel: “We had my father-in-law sleep on it for a week after he had a hip operation—we wanted to splurge on something that would be comfortable for him,  and he had zero complaints.”

What’s more, she adds, “It can also stand up to my kids jumping on it! It's definitely firm, which I like, because it means the mattress is ultra-supportive.” That’s thanks to the Dream Coils, which are made with high-quality springs for maximum support and durability. Each spring is individually pocketed in a soft cloth sleeve, holding it in place and protecting it against wear and tear. Plus, per Alexia, “It’s so easy to convert from a sofa to a sleeper that my 6-year-old does it when he wants more play surface area.”

As for upholstery, it comes in a soft velvet with a subtle sheen (available in five shades—navy, oyster, light grey, java and charcoal). “I love the bold navy we went with; it’s more of a statement piece than something that blends into your decor.” The solid wood legs and frame add to the long-lasting feel, and Alexia says, “setup is minimal.” The only caveat? Getting it through the door. “It’s delivered curbside, and it is BIG,” she explains. “We actually had two of our neighbors plus a kind stranger on the street help us carry it into our house, which proved to be difficult because the box is large and heavy, which was tricky to get around the corner of our door/house.” Still, once it’s in place, she says it’s a sleeper that’s as guest-ready as it is kid-proof—compact enough for the city, but substantial enough as a family hangout in the suburbs.

Fast Facts

  • Dimensions: 72.6" W x 37.6" D x 39.6" H
  • Fabric options: Velvet in Navy, Oyster, Java, Light Grey, Charcoal
  • Delivery: Curbside (very heavy box—needs multiple people)

burrow

If you’re short on space, budget or the patience it requires to wrestle with a pull-out frame, Burrow’s $239 Sleep Kit instantly transforms the Nomad sofa into a guest bed. As former editor Nicole Frazzini explains in a PureWow100 review, “In New York, it’s unlikely that I’ll have a spare room anytime soon, but I love hosting my friends and family from out of town, so it’s important for my couch to double as a comfy sleeping area (for me), while my guests enjoy my bed.” Enter: This luxe bundle, which centers around a two-inch memory foam topper that lays directly over the cushions. Not only is the quilted cover designed to even out the couch surface (so there are no awkward gaps or pressure points), but it also includes a fitted sheet, flat sheet, quilted blanket and pillow with matching pillowcase—each cut to the precise dimensions of the Nomad configuration you choose (be it a compact loveseat or sprawling L-shape).

Nicole tested it when her mom came to stay, noting that “along with sheets that are perfectly fitted to the sofa, the memory foam topper allows you to enjoy a night on the couch without winding up with back pain the next day…I had a perfectly comfy sleep with no waking up in the middle of the night and no next-day pain.” And beyond the kit, the Nomad itself is a standout modular sofa: available in multiple configurations, including a three-seater, a sprawling sectional or even an L-shaped chaise. You also have endless options with arm styles, leg finishes and stain-resistant upholstery.

But the beauty of the Sleep Kit is that it isn’t locked into one design—you can bundle it at checkout when customizing your Nomad or buy it later as a standalone upgrade. Nicole admits she swapped in her own pillows for extra comfort but ultimately calls it a “game-changer” for small-space hosting. And if you already own a non-Burrow sofa with comparable dimensions? You can save hundreds by buying the kit alone and transforming your existing couch into a guest-ready bed. No frame wrestling or budget-blowing required.

Fast Facts

  • Dimensions: 85” L x 35” D x 33” H (multiple configurations available)
  • What’s Included: Two-inch memory foam topper, fitted sheet, flat sheet, quilted blanket, pillow + pillowcase
  • Delivery: Sleep Kit ships in one compact package

What to Consider When Shopping for a Sleeper Sofa

According to Dr. Leon Mao, a clinical physiotherapist at 360 Med Care, you want to look for a sofa bed with the following characteristics:

  • A Strong frame: Choose a couch with a strong frame that’s built to last. Hardwood or solid steel frames are best, and you want to keep an eye out for ‘kiln-dried’ in the description, which are less prone to snapping and cracking.
  • Dense cushioning: High-density foam cushions offer a little give, prevent sinking, and add a layer of firm support to your couch. You could also look for a couch with medium-firm cushions with down, which encourage good posture and mold to your body shape to support your back.
  • Medium-firm mattress: Typically, most chiropractors will recommend a medium-firm mattress for all types of sleepers. This means looking for a mattress that uses springs and foam to offer support and cushion. Also, be sure to go with thicker mattress that have a minimum height of 3.5 inches.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the Difference Between a Sleeper Sofa and a Sofa Bed?

The simple difference between a sleeper sofa and a sofa bed is that the former has a mattress and frame hidden underneath. Sofa beds, on the other hand, don’t include a mattress. Instead, they often have a hidden layer of foam that you can pull and lift to meet the bench seat for an extended sleeping surface. Plus, unlike futons (which are usually convertible by laying the backrest down), sofa beds tend to be larger with a queen-sized width when fully extended.

Which is better sofa bed or sofa sleeper?

Generally speaking, a sleeper will probably be more comfortable than a sofa bed, since it includes a mattress that’s, well, intended for sleeping. If you’re strapped for space, however, you’ll probably want to go with a sofa bed—these tend to be more compact. Either way, you want to make sure you’re paying attention to the width, height, seat depth and cushioning to support your neck and back. According to Dr. Mao, these can make a huge difference in how the sofa feels and supports your most prominent pressure points (more on that below).

How to make a sleeper sofa more comfortable?

Add a mattress topper to your sleeper sofa to make it feel more like a bed and less like a pull-out. These can span from memory foam options to feather-filled pillow tops, so long as it can provide enough loft to make the mattress feel more substantial. Another thing you can do is add a non-slip cushion pad. According to Dr. Mao: “It will be difficult to maintain a good posture if the cushions on your couch keep slipping. Placing an anti-slip cushion pad between the cushion and couch will help provide a strong grip without having to use Velcro or glue.”
