insomnia cookie ranking: assorted cookies from insomnia cookies in boxes

If you were a college student in the early aughts, you likely had your fair share of Insomnia Cookies. Known for delivering warm confections to dorms into the wee hours of the night, the brand’s treats are beloved by coeds (and everyone else) for their gooey, chewy splendor. Even better, they’re pretty affordable, compared to some other online cookie brands (college students are famously broke, after all).

To find out which treat reigns supreme, as I’ve only ever had the pleasure of eating their chocolate chunk variety—more on that later—I tasted nearly every flavor on Insomnia Cookie’s menu (besides the double chocolate mint and the gluten-free chocolate chunk) to bring you the following honest reviews, original photos and overall rankings. Read on for my hot takes, divided by the brand’s two core lines, Classic (fewer frills and more affordable), Deluxe (larger and totally OTT) and vegan.

27 Fun Cookie Recipes That Are Just as Enjoyable to Make as They Are to Eat

9. Classic with M&M’s

  • What It Is: chocolate chip cookie with M&M’s
  • Price: $3

Maybe it was a fluke, but this pick was really chocolatey, bordering on excessive. That said, I really enjoyed the crispness of the M&M’s shells. They offered much-welcome textural contrast to an otherwise entirely soft, gooey cookie.

8. Double Chocolate Chunk

  • What It Is: dark chocolate cookie with milk chocolate chunks
  • Price: $3

Super fudgy and generously chocolate-dappled, this cookie is a must for brownie lovers or folks looking to pair their dessert with vanilla ice cream. It was super rich and decadent without being plain sweet. There were slightly bitter, dark chocolate-y elements to its flavor that kept it from being overwhelming.

7. Sugar

  • What It Is: buttery sugar cookie with hints of vanilla
  • Price: $3

Hot take: I felt this cookie gave more cake batter energy than the Confetti Deluxe cookie. It was very buttery, with an impossible-to-ignore saltiness that kept it from being entirely cloying. This Insomnia cookie was even softer than its counterparts, but if you’re into doughy sugar cookies, it’ll be right up your alley.

6. White Chocolate Macadamia

  • What It Is: coconut cookie with macadamia nut pieces and white chocolate chips
  • Price: $3

I love white chocolate macadamia cookies. But IMO, they’re only as good as the mix-ins. This one (or at least the one I received) needed more nuts; their waxy crunch is key to the cookie’s texture and appearance. This one was very soft and tender, slightly tropical (shoutout to you, coconut) and sweet.

5. Chocolate Chunk

  • What It Is: vanilla cookie with milk chocolate chunks
  • Price: $3

Can’t go wrong with a classic, right? Insomnia’s chocolate chipper (or chunker, rather) is balanced but very chocolatey. I wouldn’t have minded a little less chocolate and a touch more salt (even just in the dough, rather than a flourish of flakes on top). While I prefer my chocolate chip cookies a bit harder-baked with a browner, more caramelized bottom, the sizeable chocolate puddles were undeniably rich and drool-worthy.

4. Churro Chocolate Chunk

  • What It Is: cinnamon sugar cookie with chocolate chunks
  • Price: $3

The warm-spiced nature of this cookie was definitely more prominent than in the snickerdoodle. I sort of feel like the chocolate took away from the cinnamon sugar’s intensity with its sweetness, but all in all, this was very solid.

3. Oatmeal Raisin

  • What It Is: cinnamon and molasses cookie with oatmeal and raisins
  • Price: $3

If you’re someone who thinks you don’t like oatmeal raisin cookies, this one just might convert you. It was tender with tasty notes of brown sugar. The cinnamon was gentle but prominent, and it had a very approachable ratio of raisins to oats to cookie that makes it great for newbies. I do think it would benefit from a touch more crispness, but it was one of my favorites, nonetheless.

2. Snickerdoodle

  • What It Is: buttery cookie coated in cinnamon sugar
  • Price: $3

This one seemed much thinner than the others; perhaps there was a higher ratio of butter that melted down and caused the dough to spread more as it baked. It tasted like Cinnamon Toast Crunch and boasted some nice caramelization around the edges, mostly on the underside of the cookie.

1. Peanut Butter Chip

  • What It Is: peanut butter cookie with peanut butter chips
  • Price: $3

I loved how salty and buttery this pick was. It wasn’t nearly as gritty as the peanut butter cup cookie, but it still delivered all the savory, nutty splendor. With a smoother texture and an ample dose of creamy PB chips, this cookie was my favorite of the classic assortment.

6. S’mores

  • What It Is: chocolate cookie with toasted marshmallow, graham cracker and chocolate chunks
  • Price: $5

This one looked good but fell a bit flat for me. It was very marshmallow-y and chewy, which I was grateful for, but I felt it was lacking in bready, salty graham cracker. I would have preferred twice as much graham and no chocolate chunks, given that the dough was already chocolatey. This cookie was also very, very sweet.

5. Salted Caramel

  • What It Is: sugar cookie with caramel, almond toffee and sea salt
  • Price: $5

Since so many of these cookies were firmly on the sweet side, I was excited for a salty number. Alas, I found myself wishing for more salt, but it wasn’t bad by any means. I liked the chew and resistance of the caramel pools, but I was also hoping it would vary in texture with some crispy, thinner bits of toffee to contrast the stretchy pockets of caramel. Its texture was pretty uniform.

4. Triple Chocolate

  • What It Is: butter cookie with three types of chocolate chunks
  • Price: $5

I loved the look of this one, but once I tasted it, I wished the chocolates—or at least one of them—were more bitter. I think they were all milk chocolate in different shapes, rather than a mix of dark, semisweet and milk chocolates, for example. That said, I loved the tenderness and creaminess of the nuggets, although they may be overkill for some cookie fans.

3. Confetti

  • What It Is: sugar cookie with rainbow sprinkles and vanilla chips
  • Price: $5

If you’re someone who can’t control yourself around a tube of store-bought cookie dough, this pick was made especially for you. The texture was sort of like soft, wet sand—textured without being gritty. Its sugar cookie base was very apparent, and I felt it was lacking a bit of the saltiness that cake batter offers. However, I liked the texture, look and taste of the generously applied sprinkles.

2. Chocolate Peanut Butter Cup

  • What It Is: peanut butter cookie with chunks of Reese’s peanut butter cups
  • Price: $5

I was surprised to find out these cookies included real Reese’s cups! The candy seemed much bigger than the standard. However, the giveaway was the salty peanut butter filling. Overall, this cookie tasted like Nutter Butters, thanks to its salty edge. The dough was grittier than the rest, but still soft. I wouldn’t have minded more PB cup chunks, either.

1. Oatmeal Chocolate Walnut

  • What It Is: oatmeal cookie with walnuts and milk chocolate chunks
  • Price: $5

Consider this the king of oatmeal cookies. This one was very crisp compared to the others (especially the larger Deluxe cookies). The molten chocolate offered luxurious sweetness to the sharper cinnamon-brown sugar notes, and I adored the sticky, slightly chewy edges. Ultimately, it reminded me of a firmer Oatmeal Creme Pie.

3. Vegan Double Chocolate Chunk

  • What It Is: dark chocolate dough with dairy-free chocolate chunks
  • Price: $3

This one felt a little drier than the others. It also had a denseness to its texture that the other vegan cookies didn’t. While the chocolate was tasty for a dairy-free alternative, the cookie itself had a less appetizing texture and flavor. That said, if you’re a vegan who really loves chocolate, it’ll get the job done.

2. Vegan Chocolate Chunk

  • What It Is: buttery dough with dairy-free chocolate chunks
  • Price: $3

The cookie itself wasn’t very noteworthy. The texture was tender and moist, especially for a vegan cookie, but it didn’t contribute much flavor. This Insomnia pick mostly just tasted like chocolate (which you’d never guess was dairy free, BTW).

1. Vegan Birthday Cake

  • What It Is: vanilla dough with rainbow sprinkles
  • Price: $3

OK, I did not expect to prefer the vegan iteration of the Confetti Deluxe over the real thing…but here we are. It was far more cake batter-y in flavor, and there was something almost, um, Play-Doh-y about its texture. What enticed me most was the smell; it was almost fruity but still rich and starchy on the nose, like corn pudding or corn milk.
