What’s Gaby Cooking/Minimalist Baker/Ambitious Kitchen

Nothing against a tropical smoothie, or even a spinach-packed green one, but we’re all about a berry beverage. Raspberry, blueberry, strawberry, blackberry—these cuties are sweet, tart and basically nature’s version of candy. (Not to mention, they’re high in antioxidants, and studies have shown they can positively affect blood pressure, blood sugar and your gut microbiome). Hence why we’re putting all of these 17 berry smoothie recipes on our to-make list—from ginger-mango-berry to “knock you naked” PB and strawberry.

10 Tasty Low-Sugar Smoothies That Won’t Spike Your Blood Sugar

1. Blueberry-Ginger Smoothie

  • Time Commitment: 15 minutes
  • Why We Love It: <10 ingredients, <500 calories, dairy free

Ginger is anti-inflammatory (and it might also be immunity-boosting), but we love the spicy root regardless. After a spin in the blender with blueberries, coconut milk, coconut yogurt and honey, it mellows out and balances the sweetness of the fruit.

2. Gwyneth Paltrow’s Blueberry Cauliflower Smoothie

  • Time Commitment: 5 minutes
  • Why We Love It: <15 minutes, <10 ingredients, <500 calories, dairy free

Whoa, we had no idea cauliflower could look this gorgeous. It takes over for banana, making this berry smoothie filling but lower in carbs. Aside from antioxidant-rich blueberries, there’s also protein from almond butter, brightness from fresh lime and a pinch of sweetness from a chopped date.

3. Triple Berry Smoothie Bowl

  • Time Commitment: 5 minutes
  • Why We Love It: <15 minutes, <500 calories

Rise and shine with this vibrant number, starring blueberries, strawberries and raspberries. It’s as simple as adding Greek yogurt (oh hey, protein) and ice and blending. Top it off with your favorite granola, flaxseeds or extra berries.

4. Poppy’s Pink Smoothie

  • Time Commitment: 5 minutes
  • Why We Love It: <15 minutes, <10 ingredients, <500 calories

Blogger Gaby Dalkin named this pink drink for her daughter, who can’t get enough of the berry smoothie. And with raspberries, strawberries, banana and vanilla yogurt, can you blame her?

5. Antioxidant Triple Berry Smoothie

  • Time Commitment: 5 minutes
  • Why We Love It: <15 minutes, high protein, high fiber

We can’t promise that this smoothie will give you celebrity-status skin, but we can promise it has plenty of fiber, proteins and vitamins to make you feel so good, you’ll glow. (Psst: There’s also spinach in there, but you won’t even taste it.)

6. Gingery Mango & Berry Smoothie

  • Time Commitment: 5 minutes
  • Why We Love It: vegan, gluten free, <15 minutes

It’s so creamy you might not believe it, but this berry smoothie is dairy free and vegan. That’s thanks to coconut milk and mango, which lends a thicker, ice cream–like texture when frozen and blended. A little lime juice and shredded coconut will make you feel like you’re on vacation.

7. “Knock You Naked” Peanut Butter Strawberry Banana Smoothie

  • Time Commitment: 5 minutes
  • Why We Love It: <15 minutes, <10 ingredients, <500 calories, dairy free

Peanut butter and banana take this strawberry smoothie from simple to “so, where can I get another glass?” It’s like a PB&J in a glass. (We’ll keep our clothes on though.)

8. Banana Blueberry Smoothies

  • Time Commitment: 5 minutes
  • Why We Love It: <15 minutes, <10 ingredients, dairy free

We’re all about the three B’s: blueberries, banana and butter—nut butter, that is. A mix of chia, hemp and flax seeds and you’re on your way to one very nutritious breakfast (or snack).

9. Blackberry Smoothie

  • Time Commitment: 5 minutes
  • Why We Love It: <10 ingredients, <15 minutes, <500 calories

If you’re concerned about the seeds from the berries, you can try straining them out once your smoothie is blended. But our preferred method is to use a high-speed blender (like a Vitamix) and blend on high until the seeds are pulverized into the mix.

10. Ridiculously Good Wild Blueberry Muffin Smoothie

  • Time Commitment: 5 minutes
  • Why We Love It: high protein, <15 minutes

Another blueberry smoothie? Snooze—except this one, which is naturally sweetened with dates and has a boost of protein from Greek yogurt, isn’t a snooze at all. In fact, it tastes like everyone’s fave bakery treat (without all the refined sugar).

11. Creamy Mixed Berry Smoothie

  • Time Commitment: 5 minutes
  • Why We Love It: <15 minutes, <10 ingredients, high protein

You can’t go wrong with the blueberry + strawberry + blackberry combo, but pineapple and orange juices add an unexpected tropical flavor we love. Use frozen berries for the best texture possible.

12. Basic Blueberry Smoothie

  • Time Commitment: 5 minutes
  • Why We Love It: vegan, <15 minutes, <10 ingredients

Sure, it’s basic…in the best way possible. The combination of banana, blueberry and nut butter just works, so why mess with it? (Add oats or flax if you must.)

13. Açai, Pomegranate and Raspberry Smoothie

  • Time Commitment: 5 minutes
  • Why We Love It: <10 ingredients, dairy free, <15 minutes

Açai are tiny, purple berries that are super high in anthocyanins, a type of antioxidant that can help reduce inflammation. Because they’re so low in sugar, they’re quite tart, so pair ’em with raspberries and pomegranate for sweetness.

14. Strawberry Pineapple Smoothie

  • Time Commitment: 10 minutes
  • Why We Love It: <15 minutes, <10 ingredients

The combination of strawbs, pineapple and orange juice makes us want to post up on the lanai all morning long. A dollop of Greek yogurt in the mix is essential for adding creaminess (and you know we won’t complain about the extra protein).

15. Detoxifying Beet and Berry Smoothie

  • Time Commitment: 5 minutes
  • Why We Love It: vegan, gluten free, <10 ingredients

You put beets in your juice, so why not blend them into a berry smoothie? Add bananas, apple and frozen strawberries and the resulting drink is equal parts virtuous and delicious.

16. Strawberry Spinach Smoothie

  • Time Commitment: 5 minutes
  • Why We Love It: kid-friendly, dairy free, <10 ingredients

You can buy the green powder you got served in an ad on Instagram, or you can just put good ol’ spinach in a smoothie to get your greens. The flavor is ultra-mild, but with pineapple, banana and strawberries, you almost can’t taste it at all.

17. Cranberry Smoothie

  • Time Commitment: 5 minutes
  • Why We Love It: <10 ingredients, <15 minutes

This is a great way to use up leftover cranberries around the holidays, whether they’re fresh or frozen. Make sure you use a ripe banana to offset the tartness of the berries.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are Berry Smoothies Healthy?

According to Dr. Felicia Stoler, DCN, a smoothie is as healthy as the produce that goes in it. “Fiber, protein, vitamins and minerals are important components of the ingredients that people generally put in smoothies,” she explains. Berry smoothies can totally be healthy, as long as they’re made with other equally nutritious ingredients (like other fruits, veggies, nuts, seeds and protein sources like yogurt or plant-based milk).

What Are the Best Berries for Smoothies?

We think all berries are great for blending into smoothies, so this one comes down to personal taste preferences. That said, some berries are super seedy (like blackberries) and some can be hard to blend (think giant, frozen strawberries). Plan accordingly.

What Liquid Is Best for Smoothies?

Unless you want to eat your smoothie with a spoon, adding a liquid is essential to help it blend and make it sippable. We like using plant-based milks like oat or almond to add protein and keep our smoothie dairy free, but you can use any type of milk or even just water. Fruit juice is fine too, but be aware that it can add a lot of sugar to your drink.

What Can I Put In My Smoothie To Make It Creamy?

Icy smoothies, get outta here. To keep your smoothie, well, smooth, try adding a nut butter or a dollop of yogurt. Bananas and avocados can add creaminess too, and we also find that using frozen fruit will lend a more luscious texture from the start.
