You may have heard this before but let me reiterate: Eyebrows help to create symmetry on our faces, so changing their shape can totally alter our look. There’s a reason I often scoff at the thin, squiggly brows of the ’90s—they did nothing for my bone structure. But today’s bold, full brows require a bit of grooming to look polished rather than unruly. Thanks to a career as a beauty editor, I've learned the best product for the job is hands down eyebrow gel. While experimenting with pencils and pomades proved to be great for filling in sparse areas, it’s a gel that really adds volume and hold. So, I meticulously tested a handeful of formulas on the market to bring you the best of the best. Here are seven that stood out among the competition.

1. Anastasia Beverly Hills Clear Brow Gel

Best Overall

  • Value: 17/20
  • Ease of Use: 20/20
  • Aesthetics: 18/20
  • Brush Design: 19/20
  • Staying Power: 19/20
  • TOTAL: 93/100

I like this brow gel so much, I wrote a whole review about it. It’s basically impossible to mess up. For starters, it’s clear, so there’s no risk of any wrong color matches, which makes it great for first-timers. Then there’s the brush. It’s the biggest, coarsest brush I’ve found in a brow mascara (like the size of an eyelash mascara wand) and my thick Italian hairs responded to it—just a few quick strokes easily whipped them into shape. The formula isn’t tacky-feeling whatsoever and it leaves behind a light hold that neither flakes nor looks stiff (even on hour 12 of wear).

2. ILIA Essential Brow Natural Volumizing Brow Gel

Best Natural

  • Value: 16/20
  • Ease of Use: 18/20
  • Aesthetics: 19/20
  • Brush Design: 18/20
  • Staying Power: 17/20
  • TOTAL: 88/100

ILIA is one of my go-to brands for clean, non-toxic makeup. I first fell in love with the True Skin Serum Foundation, the Super Serum Skin Tint SPF 40 and now, the Essential Brow Natural Volumizing Brow Gel. First, let’s talk about the brush. It features a dual-sided design with shorter bristles on one side and longer bristles on the other to customize how much product you want to deposit. The bristles are also super firm and coarse, so they grab each eyebrow hair and groom it into place in one swoop. Then there’s the formula. It’s made with a blend of clean ingredients and organic botanicals to condition hairs and create a light hold that doesn’t stiffen or flake. The one downside: There are only three colors to choose from (blonde, medium brown and dark brown), so if you prefer clear, you’re out of luck. The shades seem to be universal but might not be an exact match for every user.

3. Milk Makeup KUSH Fiber Eyebrow Gel

Best Innovative Formula

  • Value: 17/20
  • Ease of Use: 18/20
  • Aesthetics: 18/20
  • Brush Design: 17/20
  • Staying Power: 18/20
  • TOTAL: 88/100

This brow gel is ideal for anyone who swore by the pencil-thin arches of the ’90s and whose brows haven’t fully recovered (aka you’re stuck with patchy spots). The formula features tiny tinted heart-shaped fibers that lock onto brows to create more fullness and fill any hollow holes. Pro tip: Brush brows in the opposite direction first, before brushing them in their natural direction to deposit more fibers and build more volume. The hemp-derived cannabis seed oil helps to fuse those fibers to the individual brow hairs so you don’t get any fallout, no matter how long you wear it. Bonus: The formula comes in eight shades—from warm blonde to cool black—which is the widest range that we’ve seen for a brow gel.

4. W3LL PEOPLE

Best Nourishing

  • Value: 17/20
  • Ease of Use: 18/20
  • Aesthetics: 17/20
  • Brush Design: 18/20
  • Staying Power: 17/20
  • TOTAL: 87/100

W3LL PEOPLE’S brow gel was one of the first non-toxic formulas I tried, and it’s still one of my favorites. While it offers less hold that the prior three on this list, it’s so nourishing and shaping, I’ll let that slide. What makes it so nourishing, you ask? Organic botanicals, aloe vera and plant butters, which gently manipulate hairs into place, while conditioning and strengthening each strand to promote growth and fullness. The tapered brush design is almost identical to Milk Makeup’s (and equally as easy to use), but like ILIA’s formula, this one only comes in three shades.

5. BareMinerals Strength & Length Serum-Infused Clear Brow Gel

Best Growth

  • Value: 16/20
  • Ease of Use: 18/20
  • Aesthetics: 18/20
  • Brush Design: 18/20
  • Staying Power: 16/20
  • TOTAL: 86/100

The first thing I noticed about this brow gel? Its brush is unlike any other I’ve used. It’s flat and bristleless on the backside and features short silicone spikes on the front to comb hairs into place. The formula also isn’t like any of the others on this list. It’s actually more of a plant-based growth serum that helps to deliver fuller-looking brows immediately and over time, thanks to red clover flower and potent peptides. The consistency is a bit more gel-like, too in that it’s super lightweight and provides a bit of definition and shine without stiffness.

6. Jane Iredale Purebrow Gel

Best Lightweight

  • Value: 17/20
  • Ease of Use: 18/20
  • Aesthetics: 18/20
  • Brush Design: 17/20
  • Staying Power: 15/20
  • TOTAL: 85/100

Jane Iredale’s eyebrow gel is also made with clean, plant-based ingredients to condition and tame unruly brows without any sticky or crunchy after-effects. And the ingredients (a combo of wheat protein, algae extract and beeswax) are so lightweight, I can barely even tell it’s on. If you’re someone with natural bushy arches (jealous), it’s the ideal solution for shaping and slicking hairs into place, without adding extra bulk. Plus, the brush is much more substantial than many of the other picks, which makes grooming thick, coarse hair a breeze.

7. Benefit Gimme Brow + Volumizing Eyebrow Gel

Best Water Resistant

  • Value: 15/20
  • Ease of Use: 18/20
  • Aesthetics: 16/20
  • Brush Design: 17/20
  • Staying Power: 19/20
  • TOTAL: 85/100

The OG of all brow products, Benefit Gimme Brow is a true fan favorite. Its fiber-filled formula and miniscule tapered brush are masters at thickening hairs and adding bulk to otherwise wimpy arches. And the best part: All eight shades are water resistant and long wearing, so you can apply it in the morning and your brows will still be just as polished hours later. But due to the thickness of the formula and the tiny fibers, it seems to dry out quicker than all the other formulas I’ve tried, which is why I had to dock a few points in the value category. As for the aesthetics? While Benefit’s retro designs evoke pin-up vibes, the tube is rather bulky and takes up precious space in our makeup bag. The original sleek tube was much more manageable for bringing on the go.
