ICYMI: Princess Beatrice recently debuted brand-new photos from her secret wedding with Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi. If the stunning tiara she wore looks familiar, it’s probably because there’s a hidden meaning behind the accessory.
During the private ceremony, the 31-year-old bride wore the Queen Mary Diamond Fringe tiara. It was given to Princess Beatrice by her grandmother, Queen Elizabeth, who has a special connection to the headpiece.
You see, the 94-year-old monarch wore the tiara on her wedding day in 1947 (pictured below), when she tied the knot with Prince Philip at Westminster Abbey in London.
Although it’s tradition for the queen to lend a headpiece to royal brides—like Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle—this is the first time she’s given out the Queen Mary Diamond Fringe, which speaks volumes about her relationship with Beatrice.
The tiara originally belonged to Queen Elizabeth’s grandmother, Queen Mary (duh). It was made in 1919 by U.K. jeweler Garrard and Co., who create the headpiece’s standout fringe design by recycling a necklace that was given to Mary on her wedding day.
Princess Beatrice accessorized the tiara with minimal jewelry to ensure it was the standout piece. (This includes her engagement ring and wedding band, along with a few simple bracelets.) The royal even paid tribute to Queen Elizabeth with her vintage Norman Hartnell dress, which was previously worn by Her Majesty.
