And I'm not mad about it

Trends come and go. One minute it’s all tone-on-tone bouclé and dramatic lip injections, the next it’s low-rise jeans and newsboy caps making an unexpected comeback. And when it comes to hair? It’s no different. Case in point: the trendy Italian bob, which Mindy Kaling is currently rocking—and let’s just say, she’s serving.

Kaling recently took to Instagram to share a behind-the-scenes video of herself getting ready for an event tied to her Netflix show Running Point. While she was focused on her “big jeans,” I couldn’t stop looking at her hair. Mindy’s been toggling between a bob and longer lengths all year, but this look in particular felt extra fresh. Styled straight with soft volume, a deep side part and flipped-out ends, it gave major retro-meets-modern vibes. It’s giving Italian bob—and I'm are here for it.

Now if you’re wondering what, exactly, sets an Italian bob apart from your average bob, you’re not alone. Thankfully, PureWow tapped a few experts for answers.

Celebrity stylist Sarah Potempa (and co-founder of The Beachwaver Co.) broke it down: “The Italian bob is a more modern take on the classic bob. While a regular bob typically has a straight cut, the Italian bob features more volume and a blunt cut with added movement, creating a slightly fuller, more dynamic look.”

Of course, the Italian bob isn’t the only chop trending this year. There’s the curtain bob (a bob with soft curtain bangs), the bixie (bob meets pixie) and the ever-iconic Prada bob—spotted on everyone from Joey King to Simone Biles.

Honestly? A bob doesn’t sound like a bad idea right about now. As summer creeps in, the idea of freeing your neck from heavy hair and catching a breeze sounds… kinda perfect.
