Kate Middleton Just Proved These Two Trends Are Officially Back (and One of Them Is Controversial)

Talk about a blast from the past

If there’s one thing I know for sure about fashion, it’s that nothing ever really goes away. Trends might take a breather—maybe even a decade-long nap—but eventually, they circle right back around. And the latest throwback to make a surprise comeback? None other than the early 2000s duo of skinny jeans and newsboy hats, recently rocked by the style queen herself, Kate Middleton.

The Princess of Wales was featured in a video from a visit to the stunning Lake District with a group of Scouts. The outing was casual and nature-filled, but Kate, 43, still managed to serve a look. She wore a cozy cropped bomber jacket layered over a turtleneck and—you guessed it—skinny jeans. The real Y2K cherry on top? A green tweed newsboy hat that immediately gave me flashbacks to peak Britney Spears, Gwen Stefani, Christina Aguilera and Jennifer Lopez days.

For a little background, newsboy hats (also called flat caps, Gatsby caps or baker boy hats) were everywhere in the late '90s and early aughts. Pop stars and It Girls turned them into a street-style staple, before the trend quietly faded into fashion archives. But thanks to the ongoing Y2K revival, it looks like they’re getting their moment once again.

Kate’s not alone in the trend resurrection, either. Kendall Jenner was recently spotted in NYC wearing a black tweed version with a suede jacket and fringe scarf. And back in January, Keke Palmer gave the trend a high-fashion twist with a leather newsboy hat paired with a plaid Schiaparelli look and knee-high boots. Even Netflix's Emily in Paris channeled the trend in their latest season.

"Controversial" skinny jeans may still spark debate (some millennials refuse to return) but the newsboy hat seems to be making a more low-key, chic return—and honestly, I'm not mad about it.

So, what do you think? Are you ready to dust off those skinny jeans and top it off with a newsboy cap?
