I'm a Millennial Who Wore Skinny Jeans for Years—Here's Why I'm *Absolutely Not* Hopping on the Trend This Time Around

I was scrolling TikTok recently when I came upon a video of a popular influencer. Though her style is quite different from my own, I can appreciate her choices…usually. In this video, however, she was advising her followers on how to style skinny jeans (I can’t remember for sure, but I have a feeling it was sponsored by a denim brand). I watched as she showed three different outfits built around the silhouette and thought to myself, Every single one of these looks would’ve looked better/chicer/more modern with almost any other style of jeans. To my surprise (this is social media, after all) most of the comments agreed—many were to the effect of “girl, I normally love everything you wear, but this is not it.”

Now, I haven’t always rejected this popular-again style; I’m a millennial who, in her day, probably owned a dozen pairs of skinnies. I wore them in high school, in college and even in my early days at PureWow. (We all make mistakes.) But I have to say, not to be a bandwagon hater, even when I was wearing skinny jeans on the reg, I never really liked how they looked on my body: As someone with muscular legs—especially in high school and college, when I was playing sports pretty much every single day and my thighs were at their most powerful—the proportions of a skinny are all wrong on my legs—a tapered fit is simply not my friend. Also, most skinny jeans are made with stretch denim (necessary to achieve that almost leggings-esque fit), and I find that more rigid materials, like selvedge denim, look more grown-up and put together than ultra-stretchy ones.

I will pause here to note that there is one exception to my anti-skinny jean screed: Skinny jeans can be—and often are—the best option to wear when it comes to tucking pants into mid-calf-or-higher boots.

Curious how others were feeling about the return of the skinny, I polled the PureWow editorial team and got a pretty wide range of responses, from “It’s an absolute NO from me dawg, a la Randy Jackson,” (direct quote from Assistant Editor Delia Curtis) to “I’ve never stopped wearing them!”

Curtis’s reasoning is in a similar vein to mine. They tell me, “I’m a Zillennial born in 1996, and skinny jeans always made me feel so insecure, especially as a kid who was always curvier.” Nakeisha Campbell, associated editor of news and entertainment, on the other hand, is all in—and has been from the jump. “I'm a millennial who's been embracing this trend from the beginning, so this makes me happy,” she says. “I feel like this best fits my body type (bonus points if they're high waist because I hate muffin tops). And I think they accentuate the bottom half of my body pretty well. I also find them pretty comfy and I love wearing them with booties!”

Somewhere in the middle sit millennial Rachel Bowie, PureWow’s senior director of special projects and royals, and Gen X Senior Editor Dana Dickey. Noting that she wore skinnies during the first go-round, Dickey thinkS they look good when worn in a stretch denim, high-waist silhouette, but notes that while working from home, “I want a more comfortable jean to wear for my 12-hour day, and don't find skinny jeans as comfortable as boyfriend or wide-leg cuts. So, I like them as part of my denim wardrobe but not the main style I reach to wear.” For her part, Bowie says she never really gave them up, but appreciates that skinnies being deemed “out” encouraged her to try new things. She tells me, “I do think the fact that they were less in vogue over the years gently encouraged me to switch things up and experiment with other silhouettes, an experience I'm grateful for since it taught me that, even as a petite, I'm not limited to a single denim cut.”

So, if I’m wholeheartedly rejecting the comeback of skinny jeans, what styles do I like? Honestly, almost all of the others. While I love a wide-leg trouser jean or ultra-baggy fit, eschewing skinnies doesn’t mean going 180 degrees in the opposite direction; in my opinion, even a slim-fit style that skims the leg ever so slightly more than a skinny looks more stylish and refined. (A few examples of what I’m talking about below.)

Finally, I want to stress that, as with every single fashion trend, if you want to wear it and it makes you feel comfortable and happy, by all means please wear it. Fashion is in the eye of the beholder, and who am I to tell you to donate your beloved skinnies? (No one.) As SEO Editor Marissa Wu put it, “I’m indifferent! Wear them if they work with your body type, skip if they don’t. Don’t dress for trends!!” As such, I’m confident saying you will never find me zipping up a pair of skinny jeans again. (But by all means, you do you.)
