albertsons fall snack review: holiday stuffing chips, maple creme cookies and brown butter sage popcorn
Albertsons

In my time as a food editor, I’ve learned that people have strong feelings about regional grocery stores. Personally, I’m a Wegmans and ShopRite stan, having grown up on the East Coast. But if you’re in the Western or Southern U.S., odds are you’re familiar with Albertsons, a cult-favorite chain that’s been around since 1939. When I was offered a sampling of the supermarket’s newest fall snacks, I knew it was time to broaden my supermarket horizons.

Below, you’ll find detailed reviews, original photos and an overall ranking of six new products that will only be available through November 9. (You can also find them at a number of other chains owned by Albertsons, including Safeway, Vons, Pavilions, Jewel-Osco, ACME and Shaw’s.) They range from festive maple cookies to potato chips that taste like Thanksgiving dinner. Read on to find out what’s worth the buy on your next visit.

11 New Trader Joe’s Items, Ranked & Reviewed by a Food Editor

6. Signature Select Fig & Thyme Mini Artisan Crisps

  • What It Is: cracker crisps studded with oats, various seeds, dried figs and thyme

I loved how these crisps looked, and they’d be a perfect fit for a fall charcuterie board. They’d pair beautifully with a hard sharp cheddar and a creamy Brie alike. However, I wished they were crispier. I expected the chew of the dried fig in certain bites, but the whole cracker had a slight softness to it that I didn’t love.

5. Signature Select Maple Honey Cashews

  • What It Is: cashews in maple honey seasoning

The nuts felt super fresh, buttery and crunchy with that signature waxiness that cashews are known for. I felt the maple came through more on the nose (think buttery pancakes with syrup), while the honey dominated the flavor. To that end, I was glad that neither was excessively strong or artificial tasting, although I also wished the seasoning was more robust and generously applied.

4. Overjoyed Maple Leaf Crème Cookies

  • What It Is: maple leaf-shaped sandwich cookies with maple crème filling

Let me start by saying that these were *adorable.* They struck the perfect balance of cookie to cream, with the ends being crisp and thin and the filling being evenly dispersed with a thickness akin to Oreos. Their aroma was like malted pancake, while the taste was balanced with the optimal dose of salt. That said, the texture was hands-down the best part.

3. Signature Select Brown Butter Sage Popcorn

  • What It Is: pre-popped popcorn with brown butter sage seasoning

As a popcorn-for-dinner type person, I was so glad this leaned salty instead of sweet. After trying Trader Joe’s maple popcorn, I expected this to be more in the vein of kettle corn, which isn’t my favorite. Even with its savory nature, it smelled sort of like butterscotch to me, and the flavor had a creamy roundness to it that may make you think of brown butter desserts, despite it not being sweet.

2. Overjoyed Yogurt-Covered Pumpkin Spice Pretzels with Sprinkles

  • What It Is: yogurt-covered pretzels flavored with pumpkin spice, topped with white sprinkles

As far as sweet-and-salty snacks go, chocolate- or yogurt-covered pretzels are my jam. But I’m also a former Starbucks barista who shudders at the phrase “pumpkin spice,” so I didn’t expect to adore these so much. But they were impeccably balanced without a flurry of overpowering warm spices. There was a tangy, almost fruity hint of sweet potato in the coating, despite not being made with actual pumpkin. I also loved the sprinkles for both the aesthetics and the bonus crunch, too.

1. Signature Select Holiday Stuffing Potato Chips

  • What It Is: wavy potato chips with holiday stuffing seasoning

Phew! These were freaking delicious. The moment I opened the bag, my senses were coaxed by a nostalgic aroma of onion, garlic, thyme and…chicken noodle soup? The crinkle-cut chips held the seasoning like a charm with their ridges, plus offered a thicker crunch than even most kettle chips I’ve had. I suggest crushing them and using them to bread chicken or pork…if you don’t devour the entire bag in 30 seconds, that is.
