It’s been a whirlwind trip to Rome for King Charles and Queen Camilla, but also one full of history and symbolism—especially today as the king joined Pope Leo XIV to pray in public at the Sistine Chapel, the first time a monarch has done so in 500 years. Still, it was Queen Camilla who was the biggest scene-stealer, donning an all-black ensemble that nods to the late Queen Elizabeth II (see similar dress here, $80). There’s more: All eyes were also on her show-stopping brooch.

The Raspberry Pip brooch is said to date back to the 1880s and be worth approximately $53,000. It’s also one that Queen Camilla has reached for on more than one occasion this year. The monarch’s wife first wore it for a service at St. Mary Magdalene Church in Scotland in January before reaching for it again on the fourth day of Royal Ascot, held near Windsor Castle, in June. According to Maxwell Stone, the creative director for U.K.-based jeweler, Steven Stone, the piece is “a deeply sentimental one from the royal vault” and holds special historical significance, too. (It was originally part of Queen Elizabeth’s private collection and is thought to be one of the late monarch’s favorites.)
“It wasn’t publicly worn for decades, until Queen Camilla revived it during the 2023 Christmas service becoming the first to showcase it in recent history,” per Maxwell.

The combination of stones is part of what makes the brooch especially unique—shaped like a Georgian cross, the Raspberry Pip features a mix of transparent topaz and sparkling diamonds. (Topaz is known for its clarity, something that allows the color of whatever is worn beneath the brooch to subtly shine through, Maxwell adds.)

It’s no secret that Camilla has quite the brooch collection to sift through in her role as monarch, but today’s selection offered equal parts elegance and sentimentality given its nod to Queen Elizabeth. As a whole, her entire ensemble seemed to be an homage to the all-black looks worn by the late queen to the Vatican over the decades.
Speaking of her all-black look, that only made Camilla’s brooch shine brighter during today’s occasion.
