Meet the Expert

Dr. Anne Sharkey, DPM, is a board-certified podiatrist based in Austin, TX, with nearly 20 years of experience. She received a doctorate of podiatric medicine from Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science.

What to Consider When Choosing Which Comfortable Sneaker to Buy

“First and foremost when shopping for new shoes, find shoes that fit well,” advises Dr. Sharkey. She suggests trying on new shoes at the end of the day to account for the natural swelling that occurs throughout the day. “Choosing shoes later in the day will ensure that the shoes fit comfortably no matter when worn.” And while most adults will likely admit they haven’t had their shoe size measured since high school (or earlier), getting properly measured in a shoe store every now and then can ensure you’re still getting the correct size, especially as that size may vary by brand. She also stresses the importance of paying attention to the fit of the toe box, i.e., the front of your shoe. “Toes shouldn’t be squished together.” Lastly, she notes that finding the right shoe is really dependent on how and when you plan to wear it. “Know what you are using the shoes for—casual shoes to run errands are going to be very different that shoes for walking hiking paths in your neighborhood and running shoes for the gym.”

How We Chose the Most Comfortable Sneakers

All of the sneakers on this list were either directly recommended by PureWow editors, friends or family, or are made by brands that work closely with podiatrists to ensure their shoes are comfortable and supportive. We scoured reviews on multiple sites for each shoe, watched YouTube videos and read up on what the experts at shoe-focused publications had to say. Because the truth is, not every shoe works for every foot, but among the 28 stunners on this list, we feel pretty confident you’ll find at least one pair—or hopefully more—of comfortable sneakers to add to your wardrobe.

The Absolute Most Comfortable Heels for Weddings, Brunches and Everything in Between

Best for City Walking

1. Reebok Lifestyle Club C 85

What We Like

  • classic design
  • great for everyday use
  • shock-absorbing EVA midsole
  • inner lining is wonderfully soft

What We Don’t Like

  • only go up to a size 11
  • few color options

Reebok

Multiple New Yorkers listed these Reebok sneakers as their favorite casual shoe for strolling around the city, though some did admit that if you deal with ample foot issues (like bunions or plantar fasciitis) then you might be happier opting for a pair with more aggressive support. Although they may look simple, like Keds or Vans, these Reebok sneakers have a much thicker, more supportive sole, including an EVA midsole to help with shock absorption—a must when strutting down concrete sidewalks. The inside of the heel also has a little extra cushion to prevent irritation there. And while the terry cloth inner lining technically doesn’t offer anything by way of support, it does feel incredibly comfortable and soft on your feet (with or without socks) as an added bonus. One review reads, “They felt a little stiff at first, but are now more flexible. I play pickleball in them every day. They are not slippery and provide enough cushioning on the outdoor court.”

FAST FACTS

  • Size Range: US 5 to 11
  • Promising Review: “I love the Reebok Club C because they are durable yet surprisingly soft and comfy on first wear (probably thanks to a combination of a leather upper and terry-lined foamy inside). Walking is basically my number one mode of transportation, and these have held up to the grime of a big city without giving me any blisters along the way.” – Katherine Gillen, senior food editor at PureWow

2. Dr. Scholl’s Time Off Sneakers

What We Like

  • subtle platform gives some extra height
  • great selection of neutral hues
  • under $100

What We Don’t Like

  • not a lot of bright colors available
  • only go up to a size 11

Dr. Scholl’s

These sleek platform sneakers have been blowing up on TikTok for months now, and we have to admit, they truly live up to the hype. They are a real triple threat—comfortable, stylish and affordable—with a sleek look that goes with just about anything in your wardrobe. And because they are by Dr. Scholl’s, you can count on these kicks to offer plenty of support and cushion for your feet. They also have a 1.5-inch platform that adds height without stressing your arches. Per one Reddit reviewer who suffers from plantar fasciitis, “These shoes are SO comfortable, I truly can’t hype them up enough. When I first put them on I was shocked at the fact I didn’t need to break them in. They instantly felt so comfortable. Usually when I wear any kind of new footwear my [plantar fasciitis] is triggered at least the first few times i wear them, but it was not with these.”

FAST FACTS

  • Size Range: US 6 to 11
  • Promising Review: “I bought these shoes after reading reviews about it on TikTok and wore them for the first time ever on the flight to abroad where I would be for the next two months. I didn't take any time to break them in and I am in absolutely awe at how amazing this pair of shoes is! These shoes were incredibly comfortable and stylish.” - DSW reviewer

Best Sustainably-Made Leather Sneaker

3. Cariuma Salvas Leather Sneakers

What We Like

  • also available in mixed leather/suede
  • with every pair of sneakers purchased, the brand plants two trees in the Brazilian rainforest
  • no break-in period required

What We Don’t Like

  • reportedly run a half size small
  • only available in white with colorful accents

Cariuma

Cariuma has long been a PureWow favorite for stylish, sustainable footwear that is both comfortable and cute. But the Slavas stand out thanks to their truly timeless design and the fact that they require zero break-in time. Seriously, the top of the sneaker is so supple and soft, our reviewer (and many others) found she could just slip these beauties on and go without worrying at all about irritation on the back of her heel. “Almost a year later, and my Cariuma Salvas are still my favorite go-to everyday sneaker,” says assistant fashion commerce editor Stephanie Meraz. (You can read her full review here.) “They’ve held up so well, only getting more comfortable and stretchy as time goes by. For instance, I can now step into them instead of having to untie and tie them over and over again. And I’ve got to say, I’m pleasantly surprised to report that they’ve stay pretty true to their original white hue. Of course, there are a few scuff marks here and there, but they don’t look gray by any means.”

FAST FACTS

  • Size Range: US 5 to 13
  • Promising Review: “I was skeptical reading all the great reviews, but after the first 10 minutes, I really liked my sneakers. They could use a little bit more arch support, but, overall, they hug my feet, feel good all day, and they look great. I would buy another pair.” - Cariuma reviewer

Best White Fabric Sneakers

4. Atoms Model 000

What We Like

  • eco-friendly, sustainable design
  • machine washable
  • run true to size

What We Don’t Like

  • few color options

Atoms

These simple lace-up kicks are infinitely cooler and more detailed than you might imagine. Designed by husband-and-wife team Sidra Qasim and Waqas Ali, Atoms’s signature sneaker was built to be worn day-in and day-out with a cushy foam insole and eco-friendly upper that has just the right amount of stretch to mold to your feet without sacrificing support. They also come with a copper lining that helps prevent odor and the build-up of bacteria, meaning you can go ahead and skip socks, if you so choose. Oh, and did we mention the proprietary elastic shoelaces? Tie them once and you can simply slip these kicks on and off without needing to readjust or bending the back out of shape. As for fit, reviewers love that these simple kicks come not just in half sizes, but quarter sizes as well (like 7.25 and 7.75) so you can get a truly perfect fit for your foot.

FAST FACTS

  • Size Range: US 5 to 16.5 (also available in quarter sizes)
  • Promising Review: “I've had my atoms for over a year now, and I can tell you they're still amazing. I'm a tough customer to please when it comes to shoes. I had a pretty significant injury to my right foot about ten years ago and ever since then finding a shoe that is comfortable for both of my feet has been a literal pain. But my atoms are amazing. I can wear them all day, take a five mile walk and my feet don't hurt. They also are in pretty good shape still even after a year of wear and tear. I highly recommend them.” – Crystal M., Atoms reviewer

Best Customizable Design

5. Nike Blazer Mid ‘77

What We Like

  • colors are fully customizable for a unique design
  • high-top silhouette offers extra ankle support
  • leather upper

What We Don’t Like

  • require some break-in time
  • reportedly run a half size small

Nike

For those looking for a unique shoe, Nike offers the ability to pick and choose every element of its best-selling Blazer Mid ‘77 high-tops. So you can go for a totally monochrome white-on-white design, a combination of your alma matter’s colors or a chaotic mix of rainbow hues—the world is your Swoop-adorned oyster. In addition to giving you the ability to style your own sneaker, the Blazer Mid ‘77 offers excellent ankle support, with ample cushion in both the high-top and the tongue of the shoe to cradle your ankle while you walk. The leather-and-rubber outsole is also wonderfully durable and thick enough to keep your feet happy, even on long days full of walking, but not so thick that it looks or feels like a platform. One thing to keep in mind is that almost all reviewers say this shoe runs a half size small, and fully customized orders are final sale, so take that into consideration before adding to cart.

FAST FACTS

  • Size Range: US 5 to 12
  • Promising Review: “Nike Blazers are great for working out or just to wear for fun. They have a comfortable tight look to them with great ankle support. I’ve had mine for about a year now and they have become my daily shoes. I just love how they look with everything I wear and how they’ve felt on my feet.” - Nike reviewer

Best Casual Sneakers

6. PUMA Carina Sneakers

What We Like

  • easy to clean
  • under $75

What We Don’t Like

  • some found the leather to be too stiff

Puma

These classic white kicks do in fact come in other colors, but we love the all-white look of the originals for casual everyday use. The sole is much thicker than similar styles from other brands (like Vans or Keds) but isn’t so thick as to be considered a platform. But that extra rubber, combined with a SoftFoam+ sockliner and a molded insole, helps make these shoes incredibly comfy for strolls around town or exploring new cities. And they are very highly rated at Amazon—as in, they have nearly 16,000 five-star reviews and a 4.5 overall rating. As one reviewer writes, “I bought these just for style but didn’t think I’d dare do a bunch of walking in them. But I was on vacation in NOLA, put them on to do a short walk for coffee and that short walk turned into a full day of walking and exploring. I felt like I was walking on a cloud all day. I have chronic back and leg issues, but felt great after wearing these on my trip.” Some reviews suggest going up a half size if you have wide feet or using custom insoles, but otherwise the Carina seems to run true to size (though there is a bit of a break-in period).

FAST FACTS

  • Size Range: US 5.5 to 11
  • Promising Review: “These are some of the softest sneakers I’ve ever owned. I bought them because I loved how clean and simplistic they look back when everyone was on the Nike Air Force 1 craze, but was surprised to find out I loved them more for how they felt than how they looked. The inside sole has a super-soft foam cushioning that truly feels like it instantly molds to your feet. Not to be cheesy or cliché here, but these are the closest things to what I can only imagine is like walking on a cloud. I will say, this style does run a tad small—I had to size up (I believe) half a size or my toes were grazing the top.” – Stephanie Meraz, assistant editor at PureWow

Best for Wide Feet

7. Hilma The Fit One Sneakers

What We Like

  • fit survey helps you find the exact right shoe for your feet
  • great for running and everyday wear

What We Don’t Like

  • higher price point
  • still may be too wide for those with narrow feet

Hilma

“I have both a high arch and wide feet, so finding shoes that don’t pinch can be tricky,” admits executive editor Alexia Dellner, “but I had zero issues breaking these in. They’re super soft and incredibly comfortable, with just the right amount of support.” Indeed, Hilma is also about crafting sneakers to fit a range of foot shapes, and often focuses on fit issues that may feel hyper specific (like Dellner’s high-arch/wide-foot combination). There’s a fit survey that makes it super easy to determine the right shoe for your needs, and after that all you have to do is choose from the fleet of very chic and fun color options.

FAST FACTS

  • Size Range: US 5 to 12
  • Promising Review: “I always struggle with horrible blisters and discomfort wearing new shoes, but these Hilma sneakers felt broken in straight out of the box. So comfy for walking, running or even dancing!” - Hilma reviewer

Best Minimalist Sneakers

8. Vionic Pismo Beach Sneakers

What We Like

  • machine washable
  • lightweight
  • vegan

What We Don’t Like

  • soles purportedly run down quicker than other Vionic sneakers

Vionic

These lightweight shoes by Vionic are intended for casual wear—hence the name “Beach”—and don’t offer a huge amount of support, but they are still a great pick in our opinion because of the soft-yet-supportive material and the fact that they are machine washable. (Multiple reviewers suggest ordering a size up and using inserts if you find yourself wanting more arch support.) The laces are stretchy and actually mostly for show, as these sneakers have an easy pull-on design. And all the materials used are vegan, as an added bonus. “The perfect casual sneaker!,” raves one reviewer. “You will not be disappointed with the fit and style of these cute, lightweight shoes. Fit comfortably right out of the box and throughout a full day at Disneyland.”

FAST FACTS

  • Size Range: US 5 to 12
  • Promising Review: “I LOVE these sneakers. This is my third pair. They don’t have much arch support for me, so I add [inserts] and they are perfect. They are so comfortable and lightweight. If they get dirty, you just put them in the washer and they come out like brand new.” - a Vionic reviewer

Best Slip-On Sneakers

9.  Dr. Scholl’s Nova Sneakers

What We Like

  • lots of color and fabric options
  • affordable price point
  • back collar has extra cushioning to prevent blisters

What We Don’t Like

  • no laces means less adjustability

Dr. Scholl’s

Some days we just can’t be bothered to sit down and tie or untie tight shoelaces, so it’s good to have some supportive slip-ons in your shoe wardrobe rather than reaching for flats or sandals every time. This easy pair by Dr. Scholl’s is made using recycled materials and features a podiatrist-approved, anatomically designed insole for all-day support, in addition to extra cushioning at the ankle to help prevent uncomfortable rubbing or slipping. Some colors come in both regular and wide widths (including white, gray and black), but reviewers of both sizes say they find these shoes have a nice roomy toe-box that won’t leave your poor toes feeling cramped by midday.

FAST FACTS

  • Size Range: US 6 to 11
  • Promising Review: “Living in the city, I walk several miles every day. I bought these to replace my Vans slip-ons, and I am obsessed. I don't even think about my feet, which is all a girl can ask for.” – Nordstrom reviewer

Best High-Top Design

10. Cariuma OCA High

What We Like

  • made with eco-friendly materials
  • under $100
  • padded ankle for extra comfort

What We Don’t Like

  • few color options

Cariuma

Sustainably-minded shoppers will be glad to know that all of Cariuma’s products, not just the OCA High, are made using eco-friendly materials and methods, and the brand also plants a pair of trees in the Brazilian Rainforest for every pair of shoes purchased. But of the designs offered, the high-top is one of our absolute favorites for comfort for two main reasons—that high ankle offers additional support for all-day walking, and Cariuma’s design includes extra padding around the cuff for bonus comfort without the bulk. There is also a vegan memory foam insole that will make you feel like you’re walking on clouds, and the rubber sole is lightweight to prevent fatigue even after a full day on your feet. (P.S. There are also leather and suede versions available.)

FAST FACTS

  • Size Range: US 5 to 13
  • Promising Review: “They’re comfortable, and then on top of that they’re super easy to get on, [making it] an easy, effortless go-to. For styling, what I love about these is they’re a classic, timeless silhouette but they’ve given them a little fresh, modern edge.” – Emily Wheatley, YouTube stylist and reviewer

Best Wedge Sneaker

11. Sorel Out N About Slip-On Wedge

What We Like

  • pull-on design
  • adds 3 inches of height
  • cushioned EVA footbed

What We Don’t Like

  • doesn’t offer as much support as a flat sneaker
  • limited color options

Sorel

For those who want a little extra pep in their step but aren’t a fan of platforms (or flatforms), a wedge sneaker can be just the ticket. This Sorel pair has been a Nordstrom favorite for years, and boasts a 4.7-star rating on the site. Reviewers love the sleek design, and a zipper on the inside makes it easy to pull them on and off. And although the heel is 2 ½ inches high, the added support of the front and a cushy 1-inch sole help to offset the pressure put on your arches and the balls of your feet. They also have an EVA footbed specifically designed to support your arches without feeling stiff. Those with wider feet or anyone who plans to use custom insoles is better off going up half a size, but otherwise the Out N About wedges run true to size. One 57-year-old buyer says she typically can’t wear heels anymore, but loves these sneakers for their combination of comfort and style.

FAST FACTS

  • Size Range: US 5 to 12
  • Promising Review: “I usually add a thin insole for extra arch support in all of my shoes, but these are very comfortable with or without that extra support. I work in a large building where I walk around a lot on concrete flooring and on the first day of wearing these I was hooked. I highly recommend for casual comfort with a little heel for height.” - Nordstrom reviewer

Best Nurse Recommended

12. ON Cloudflyer

What We Like

What We Don’t Like

  • only go up to a size 11
  • limited color options

ON Running

The Cloudflyer may have originally been designed for long-distance runs, but it impressive cushion, support levels and minimal weight make it ideal for nurses who are on their feet for 12-plus hour shifts. (Of course, these would also work for other jobs that require extended time on your feet, like those working on film sets, teachers, veterinarians, pharmacists, etc.) Both the insole and the mesh upper are incredibly plush, to provide 360-degree comfort, while an extra-wide outsole gives your heels bonus support that you’ll really feel in those final hours of a long day at work. The Cloudflyer is also made with sustainable materials, for an eco-friendly boost, and the upper material is supremely breathable to prevent your feet from overheating. Plus, there’s absolutely zero break-in time required.

FAST FACTS

  • Size Range: US 5 to 11
  • Promising Review: “I’m on my feet all day long and have tried a ton of different shoes searching for the perfect work shoe. What really impressed me with ON is how lightweight they are in addition to being supportive and comfy. I’ve worn other super cushy shoes that were heavier and while they’re comfy in the morning, by the end of the day my feet are tired because of that extra weight. I own two pairs of these and, honestly, think about buying a third often.” – Meaghan M., pediatric nurse based in NYC

Best Sneaker Made Specifically for Women

13.  lululemon Strongfeel Training Shoes

What We Like

  • designed specifically for women
  • great for both workouts and lifestyle
  • cushy dual-density foam midsole

What We Don’t Like

lululemon

Lululemon first launched shoes in March 2022 with the BlissFeel, a running shoe designed specifically for women. They pretty much immediately became a huge hit, prompting the brand to release even more women-focused styles, including the Strongfeel training sneaker which is intended to be worn for gym workouts and HIIT, but is absolutely stylish enough to double as an everyday shoe. “I broke my toe a few weeks ago and these are the only shoes I've been able to wear without pain,” raves senior managing editor Catrina Yohay. “They’re made for cross-training so the sole of the shoe actually feels flatter and less cushioned than your typical running sneaker, but that’s exactly why they’ve been a godsend for recovery. Since it’s designed for support and stability (rather than propelling you forward), I don't have to put as much weight on my toes just to walk around. Plus, they pair with everything from dresses to jeans.”

FAST FACTS

  • Size range: US 5 to 12
  • Promising Review: “I love to switch things up with my workouts so I never feel too stagnant. It’s great that I can wear these for Barry’s, 305 Fitness or even my beloved Jane Fonda workout tape, or with a cute sundress for walking around NYC.” – Abby Hepworth, fashion editor at PureWow

Best for the Whole Family

14. New Balance 990

What We Like

  • available in narrow, regular, wide and extra-wide widths
  • available in kids, women’s and men’s sizes
  • made in the U.S.

What We Don’t Like

  • you might end up matching with every man in your neighborhood between the ages 40 and 75
  • high price tag (and they rarely go on sale)

New Balance

“My dad owned about 35 pairs of these when we were kids so one day I finally asked for a pair of my own to see what all the hype was about,” says Emily H., a lifelong New Balance 990 fan. “Since then, I maintain [that] these are the most comfortable shoes I’ve ever put on my feet.” Indeed, this old-school gray style is available in women’smen’s and kids’ sizes and has a reputation for being incredibly comfortable, which is perhaps why it’s earned its status as a classic. It comes with an Ortholite insole and a shock-absorbing ENCAP midsole that will keep you comfortably on your feet for hours at a time. A dual-density foam collar offers extra support and stability around the ankle without feeling too restrictive, and the toe box is nice and roomy. While lots of reviewers mention loving these for walking or standing for long periods of time, they are on the heavier side, so may not be great for running anything longer than a 5K.

FAST FACTS

  • Size Range: US 5 to 12
  • Promising Review: “I feel like it’s a perfect mix between some really soft cushion and some very stable, firm cushioning. It’s right in the middle, making it a really great everyday shoe and one of New Balance’s best midsoles yet.”  - Seth Fowler, YouTube sneaker reviewer

Best Less Expensive New Balance Favorite

15. New Balance 574 Core

What We Like

  • under $100
  • great for everyday use
  • available in wide widths

What We Don’t Like

  • limited color options

New Balance

If you don’t want to invest quite so much into a pair of sneakers (or the 990s are, yet again, sold out), we highly recommend New Balance’s 574s. The vintage-inspired design isn’t nearly as chunky as the 990, but don’t think that means the sole isn’t every bit as comfortable. The midsole is a Goldilocks combination of soft foam paired with a durable polyurethane rim to give you a balance of cushion and bounce that will keep your feet happy all day long. It’s also partially made from recycled materials as part of the brand’s continuing sustainability efforts. According to Evan Malachosky of Gear Patrol, “Like Birkenstocks, New Balance 574s mold to your feet with wear, courtesy of lightweight EVA foam cushioning in the arch and heel. They don't have high-arch support, but that's OK—for those born with high arches, these will slowly shape to your foot.” Most reviews find these shoes run true to size, but if you want extra room in the toe box or space for your own insoles, we recommend going up a half size from your usual.

FAST FACTS

  • Size Range: US 5 to 11
  • Promising Review: “I am a big fan of New Balance’s 574s as an alternative to the always sold out 990s. They’re very supportive and comfortable, plus there’s no break-in period. In my experience they run true to size, and I love that they look so cute and trendy with multiple outfits.” – Katherine Gillen, senior food editor at PureWow

Best Machine Washable

16. Rothy’s The Sneaker

What We Like

  • machine washable
  • lots of fun color options
  • sustainably made

What We Don’t Like

  • those with wide feet may find the toe box small

Rothy's

Ever since launching in 2016, Rothy’s has made a name for itself making ridiculously comfy shoes you don’t have to be precious with. Even Meghan Markle is a fan of the brand’s OG flats. The knit uppers, made from recycled water bottles, are particularly notable for their comfort right out of the box, so you don’t have to worry about blisters or skin irritation. They’re also incredibly breathable and can be tossed in the wash once you remove the midsole (though Rothy’s recommends skipping the dryer), a bonus for those who don’t want to bother with socks. Take it from one reviewer who fell in love with these kicks after recovery from two hip surgeries: “After wearing them for eight to ten hours and hustling around on my feet all night at work, my feet never hurt! I needed something that was cool and had support and these are perfect for me.”

FAST FACTS

  • Size Range: US 5 to 13
  • Promising Review: “I am consistently impressed with Rothy’s shoes, both for the comfort level and ease of care. I’ve had multiple pairs of shoes, flats and sneakers for a few years now and they still look brand new.” – Rachel Bowie, senior director of special projects at PureWow

Best Fashion Sneaker

17. Adidas Handball Spezial Sneakers

What We Like

  • timeless design
  • great for travel
  • lightweight

What We Don’t Like

  • tend to sell out often

Adidas

These Adidas kicks look remarkably like the viral Sambas that have been showing up on the feet of every fashion influencer in town, but have some subtle differences that make them a fun swap for those looking for something fashionable, but not too trendy. For instance, they have a more structured silhouette with a straighter heel in back. But don’t assume that means you’ll have to spend days breaking these in. According to affiliate strategy director Pam Masin, they’re actually incredible comfy, right out of the box. “Adidas Spezials are my new go-to sneakers for traveling since they’re comfortable for exploring, but also look cute when paired with dresses or skirts,” she sais. “I really love this blue color combo, but they also come in a bunch of other cute colors. Since they’re a low profile and are relatively lightweight, you can easily pack them in a bag (although I prefer to wear them through the airport).”

FAST FACTS

  • Size Range: US 4.5 to 15
  • Promising Review: “These shoes are great and comfortable. I wore these brand-new ones on a city break where we did a lot of walking and they were perfect. They fit true to size.” - Adidas reviewer

Best Hands-Free Design

18. Kizik Lima Sneakers

What We Like

  • slip-on design
  • breathable mesh upper
  • removable, washable insoles

What We Don’t Like

  • may feel narrow on those with wide feet

Kizik

Kizik sneakers have a unique design that allows you to slip them on and off, totally hands-free, without damaging the back of the heel over time. There are multiple styles to choose from, but we’re partial to the Lima for its comfortable, breathable mesh upper. Reviews suggest these run true to size, but those who prefer thicker socks or have wide feet may want to go up a half size for more wiggle room throughout. Per one reviewer with self-proclaimed wide, flat feet, “These are great. [The] sneakers are comfortable and supportive and easy to slip on, which is great when you’re out the door walking the dogs at 5:30 am.” Another writes, “This is my second pair of Kiziks and I adore them. My first pair were when I became too pregnant to tie my own shoes. Now, with a toddler always running out the door without me and my hands always being full these are even more vital than ever.”

FAST FACTS

  • Size Range: US 5 to 13
  • Promising Review: “So far, they are quite comfortable. Very easy to get on/off as they claim without hands (they were trending on Nordstrom for the "hands-free" aspect), and run true-to-size. After walking around in them all day at Disney World, I can also confirm they’re comfy to wear for extended periods. There was some minor rubbing of my foot with the grooved tongue that I had to adjust, but nothing major.” – Nicole Briese, former commerce director at PureWow

Best Water Repellent

19. Allbirds Wool Dasher Mizzles

What We Like

  • easy to clean
  • great for both working out and general wear
  • wool keeps your feet warm even when wet

What We Don’t Like

  • may feel too warm in hot weather
  • only go up to size 11

Allbirds

Whether you’re looking for a sneaker that will hold up during rainy day runs or just don’t want to have to consider the weather when you head out the door in the morning, the Allbirds Wool Dasher Mizzles have got you covered. They’re technically designed as running shoes, but the minimalist silhouette and low-key colors make them just as easy to wear to the office or brunch without anyone knowing they’re workout shoes. And much like all of Allbirds designs, shoppers rave about the supreme comfort of the wool upper and the cushioned midsole, both of which are made using sustainable, eco-friendly fabrics and production methods. As for all-day comfort, reviewers mention wearing these for a long shift at a hospital, walks around rainy Scotland towns and, of course, runs in all kinds of weather. Happy customer Beate M. says, “As a preschool teacher, I need good and fun shoes that keep me comfortable and secure all day, keep my feet dry and warm in case of errant watering cans, are easy to clean and allow for the occasional sprint after an escaping 3-year-old. The Dasher Mizzle does all of that. They took no time at all to break in and make me feel light yet secure on my feet. I also love the wider toe box, which allows my toes to spread out.”

FAST FACTS

  • Size Range: US 5 to 11
  • Promising Review: “They have a great squish to them when you walk that doesn't feel too bouncy. I like that they keep my feet warmer for my outdoor runs or walks in colder weather and help deter water from getting inside. I have pretty narrow feet with some accompanying bunions on both and they keep me feeling supported [but not] smushed.” – Olivia Kappler, commerce editor at PureWow

Best Kate Middleton Approved

20. Superga 2750 Cotu Sneakers

What We Like

  • ample room for adding your own insole or orthotics
  • under $100
  • earned the Kate Middleton seal of approval

What We Don’t Like

  • less support than other pairs on this list
  • hard to keep clean

Superga

Kate Middleton has been photographed wearing these simple white kicks on countless occasions, so we decided to see if the Duchess was really onto something. Turns out, Superga’s classic Cotu style is also beloved by lots of non-royals, including more than 1,000 happy shoppers who felt compelled to leave a five-star review at Zappos. We will admit, these have less support than most of the other styles on this list, but they do fare better than similar styles from brands like Keds, Vans and Converse, thanks to a cushy foam footbed and ample room in the toe box. Because they are unisex, they also run a little wider than most women’s shoes, great for those with wide feet or bunions but also for adding your own extra-supportive insoles if need be.

FAST FACTS

  • Size Range: US 5 to 11.5
  • Promising Review: “I got them to be able to walk around Europe this summer in style, and they fit the bill perfectly. They are very comfortable so far, even though there isn't really a ton of arch support. But the rubber of the sole helps to cushion your foot for all day wear.” – Zappos reviewer

21. APL TechLoom Pro

What We Like

  • lots of color options
  • 100 percent vegan
  • machine washable

What We Don’t Like

  • only go up to a size 11
  • according to reviews they may run small

APL

Yes, these sleek sneakers were originally designed for running, but the minimalist design makes them a great option for everyday use as well. Don’t let the relatively thin sole fool you, either. It’s made from a proprietary foam designed for “extreme comfort” and to “maximize energy generation,” which basically means these beauties will keep your heels and arches feeling good and put a little extra pep in your step, no matter how long you’re on your feet. The seamless upper material is also incredibly breathable, perfect for hot or humid days. One reviewer writes, “[These have] incredible support. I’m currently recovering from a broken ankle and these are my go-to everyday sneakers for everything from walking to weight training.”

FAST FACTS

  • Size Range: US 5 to 11
  • Promising Review: “I love APL's Techloom sneakers. They're lightweight, super comfy and always have best neutral color combos. Even wearing them daily, they last for so long.” – Natalie LaBarbera, assistant commerce editor at PureWow

Best for the Gym

22. Brooks Adrenaline GTS 22

What We Like

  • also work well for road running
  • lots of color options
  • some colors available in wide, narrow, extra wide and medium widths

What We Don’t Like

  • can feel a little stiff at first

Brooks

The Adrenaline GTS, one of Brooks’s most popular shoes, is already on its twentieth iteration. Although it was designed for road running, the increased support makes this an equally great shoe for gym workouts like weightlifting or HIIT, where having a stable base is equally important. A built-in GuideRails system helps to correct an inclination toward overpronating or underpronating and keeps your feet feeling steady throughout your whole movement. As for the sole, it incorporates both BioMoGo DNA cushioning and a soft DNA LOFT Crash Pad (two Brooks-original technologies engineered to both cradle and support the foot) to put a little pep in your step. “I am 54 and have horrible foot issues that have impaired and even prevented my running and even walking long distances,” reads one review. “I have to tell you that these are the best running shoes I have ever had! My feet do not hurt while running or after running. Even my fibromas do not become inflamed with running like they usually do.”

FAST FACTS

  • Size Range: US 5 to 13
  • Promising Review: “If you are looking for prime comfort, great durability and a running shoe that will carry you through the miles without breaking the bank, this is the shoe for you. Even if you don't plan on doing any burly marathon-esque efforts anytime soon, shelling out the cash for a solid pair of walking shoes like these will serve you well.” – the expert shoe testers at Outdoor Gear Lab

Best for Road or Treadmill Running

23. Asics GT-2000 Running Shoes

What We Like

  • great stability
  • work for a range of distances (both short and long)
  • help correct overpronation

What We Don’t Like

  • reportedly run a little narrow

Asics

If a good daily trainer is what you’re after, the Asics GT-2000 series is great for beginners, shorter distances and marathon efforts. Two GEL Technology cushioning systems, one at the front and another at the heel, help absorb shock as you run, whether you’re jogging or sprinting. The midsole has also been designed to help guide your foot to adjust for overpronation issues and is made from a single layer of lightweight foam for a smooth ride, even on pavement. The sturdy mesh upper provides ample support at the ankle and around the middle of your foot (right at the arch) but won’t restrict your toe movement. Per one reviewer, “I purchased these shoes for pretty intense workout classes with lots of jumping and lateral movement and they are great! They provide great support and are very comfortable.” One thing to note: Many wearers mention these feel narrow at first, so you may want to consider buying a half-size up.

FAST FACTS

  • Size Range: US 5 to 13
  • Promising Review: “I bought these because I wanted a very cushioned heel. I’m a nurse and I’m on my feet pretty much my whole shift and I tend to have heel pain. They are comfortable and have lots of cushion right where I need it most. Overall very happy with these so far.” – DSW reviewer

Best Cult-Favorite Running Shoe

24.  HOKA Clifton 9

What We Like

  • comes in wide widths
  • lots of color options
  • beloved by runners of all levels

What We Don’t Like

  • exaggerated sole may not be for everyone

HOKA

HOKA shoes have become immensely popular over the past few years, beloved for their high levels of cushion and amped-up foam soles. But the crème de la crème appears to be the Clifton style. Numerous runners told us they swear by these shoes, as did frequent walkers and new moms. More than one also mentioned that they’d been turned onto the shoes by their podiatrists, who praised the high level of support and roomy toe box. The Clifton has also been spotted on celebs like Kylie Jenner and Gwyneth Paltrow. Fans of the Clifton line likely won’t notice any huge differences between the model 8 and the new 9, but according to Tom Wheatley of the YouTube channel The Run Testers, “It does feel more noticeably enjoyable on the run. It’s a very comfortable shoe to run in if you’re racking up the miles.”

FAST FACTS

  • Size Range: US 5 to 12
  • Promising Review: “My podiatrist recommended these to me when I had peroneal tendonitis and I’ve been a fan ever since! They are so comfy, offer great support and are also lightweight.” – Randee Cerota, senior director brand partnerships at PureWow

Best for Trail Running

25. Altra Lone Peak

What We Like

  • roomy toe box
  • lightweight
  • zero drop

What We Don’t Like

  • only available in regular widths

Altra

A good trail running shoe needs to be supportive, comfortable, stable and sturdy enough to handle rough terrain and hills. This Altra pair provides all that and more. The sole incorporates the brand’s Altra EGO foam, which is nice and cushy but also allows your foot to respond and bounce quickly as you run. A sturdy midfoot cage secures your foot in place to prevent twisting and injury, and rubber along the toe also makes it easier to stay upright on steep uphill or downhill efforts. Some reviewers suggest going up half a size if you’re between sizes to better accommodate thicker socks or swelling after a hard effort. Even if you’re not hitting the trails, these cuties are wonderfully comfortable. Lynne from South Dakota writes, “I'm on my feet 12-plus hours a day, many on cement. These shoes have helped my back and I love the way they fit and look.”

FAST FACTS

  • Size Range: US 5.5 to 12
  • Promising Review: “I have very difficult feet with arthritis and ankle ligament issues. Right out of the box these were fantastic! They fit like a glove and the cushioning and padding is like no other I've tried. I had no break-in time and was able to get my steps in with ultimate comfort.” – Nancy E., an avid trail runner based in Boston, MA

Most Stylish Running Shoe

26. Tracksmith Eliot Runner

What We Like

  • great for everyday use and running workouts
  • super chic design
  • works for (almost) all types of running workouts

What We Don’t Like

  • only go up to a size 11

tracksmith

Tracksmith launched just under ten years ago, but in that time it has swiftly gained a cult following for its minimalist running gear with a vintage appeal. And at the end of 2022, the brand finally launched its very first shoe—a classic lace-up trainer built to provide comfort and stability for the vast majority of runners, no matter their speed or experience level. Both the midsole and the insole are made from responsive Pebax foam to give you double the amount of cushion for comfort even on your longest marathon training run. But what avid runner Hepworth loves most about this sneaker is its everyday versatility. “I love any shoe that can do it all, meaning I can wear it for just about any type of training run and I can wear it in my regular day-to-day without it looking so obviously like a serious workout shoe. They don’t come cheap, but they’re worth it in my opinion for the amount of use I get out of them, on and off the track.” In the off chance you aren’t in love with your Eliot Runners, Tracksmith offers free returns up to 30 days or 100 miles (whichever comes first) after you receive your shoes.

FAST FACTS

  • Size Range: US 5.5 to 11
  • Promising Review: “It felt smooth and comfortable during an 11-mile long run, delivering a unique semi-soft/semi-firm sensation. Truth be told, that was my first longish run in a shoe that wasn’t maximally cushioned in several years and I was surprised to find how much I appreciated the enhanced feel for the ground it provided, and that I didn’t miss a big layer of softer, cushier foam.” – Brian Metzler of Outside magazine

Best Skater Shoes

27. Adidas Stan Smith Shoes

What We Like

  • lots of color options
  • great for everyday use
  • made partially from recycled materials

What We Don’t Like

  • only go up to a size 11

Adidas

This classic sneaker first launched in 1965, and while there have been some tweaks made here and there (most recently the introduction of eco-friendly recycled materials), the design has mostly stayed the same over the past 50-plus years—after all, why mess with success? Although they’re named for Stan Smith, the ‘70s tennis star, they’re currently more popular among skateboarders, who appreciate the flat sole and responsive foam insole. But according to nearly 3,600 reviewers, even if you’re not looking to pick up a racket or a skateboard, you’re very likely to fall in love with these kicks. “I wore them on a trip to New York City and walked 10,000 steps per day and was comfortable,” reads one review. Another says, “This shoe is overall very comfortable. Not too narrow and with decent cushion.”

FAST FACTS

  • Size Range: US 5 to 11
  • Promising Review: “I am OBSESSED with the Adidas Stan Smiths. They were the only pair of shoes I didn't pack for [a recent] move, they're padded in the back so they don't rip off the back of my heel (something that happens to me a lot with sneakers), they've got a low profile so they don't cramp my style and they're surprisingly easy to keep clean.” – Nicole Briese, former commerce director at PureWow

What We Like

  • can be worn as a backless slide or a full shoe

What We Don’t Like

The removable, washable footbed is made of dual-density PU with a moisture-wicking lining to keep your feet comfortable and dry, with extra arch support and heel stability, even while the drop-in back is folded down. Some reviewers who wear orthotics found going up half a size fit better, but others found their usual size worked just fine, so if you’re someone who enjoys some extra toe room you might want to consider sizing up.
