Meet the Expert

Melissa Rivers is a celebrity red carpet fashion expert. In addition to her role as an executive producer and co-host on E's iconic Fashion Police series from 2003 to 2017, she has interviewed countless celebrities on award show carpets and conducts celebrity Q and A's on her weekly podcast, Melissa Rivers Group Text. Additionally, she is the author of The New York Times best-selling book Lies My Mother Told Me: Tall Tales from a Short Woman about her late mother, Joan Rivers, and her love for comedic embellishment.

What Clothing Will Be Popular for Fall 2023?

According to Rivers, this cozy season will be all about the continuation of the quiet luxury aesthetic made popular by the likes of Succession and Sofia Richie, but with a touch of embellishment in the form of some seriously *extra* accessories. Below, the rest of her fall 2023 trend predictions—and her tips on what to look for to rock them.

  • Quiet luxury with a twist: The quiet luxury aesthetic is still hanging around, but now it's got a bit more pizazz to keep things interesting, says Rivers. “We’re seeing a lot of luxurious fabrics (like silks and cashmere), buttons, a little glitter, oversized pieces, but all staying in the general quiet luxury zone,” she tells PureWow. “It’s all very clean, tailored and a little romantic."
  • Capes: If you're looking for a quick way to elevate your fall wardrobe, Rivers suggests adding a cape to the mix. “Capes are definitely making a comeback," she says.
  • Oversized accessories: Forget "the mini bag that you can’t fit anything into," Rivers says. Instead, she advises adding some bold accessories to the mix in the form of oversized purses and coats.
  • Country club chic: The preppy look is back and better than ever, making for an easy way to channel old-money style. “I...see a lot of preppy aesthetics, like button-downs and polo shirts,” Rivers explains, adding, “I like to call it the country club trend.”
  • Bold pops of color: Although every closet should have some neutral pieces, Rivers encourages trying out some more colorful items this fall, too. “We’re coming out of this neutral phase and seeing more pops of colors, so invest in something colorful this season,” she suggests. “Whether it's red shoes, a red bag or a jacket with a bit of color, anything that brings a little fun to your look will do.”

Best Mock Neck Sweater

1. Viottiset Mock Neck Sweater Vest

Viottiset

  • What We Like: lightweight, lots of color options
  • What We Don’t Like: may not be thick enough for warmth, hand-wash only
  • Size Range: S to XL
  • Promising Review: “Appears to be made of good quality material....The fabric is breathable, which will make it versatile for various seasons!”
  • Fit Recommendation: size down for a more fitted look

Shiv, is that you? This waffle-knit number practically screams "quiet luxury," plus, we like that it allows you to layer à la your favorite preppies. Though its acrylic fabric is prone to trap heat, reviewers say it's still lightweight, making it a good transitional piece. It's reportedly quite soft and has an oversized, drapey fit, so if you want a more fitted look, just size down.

Best Cape

2. Somthron Trench Cape

Somthron

  • What We Like: elegant, breatahble, modern touches
  • What We Don’t Like: thin material, not lined, hand-wash only
  • Size Range: S to 4X
  • Promising Review: “It’s long and fits great. The material is breathable and comfortable.”
  • Fit Recommendation: size up

This ain't your grandma's cape. With its slit sleeves and angular shoulders, we chose this one because it offers those extra embellishments that Rivers spoke of to make it a bit more modern. Shoppers say it's every bit as elegant as it looks in the pics and also praised its breathable material. You'll likely want to grab another jacket to wear over it on chillier days, however—per reviewers, this piece is quite thin and not lined, despite its description. The company also recommends sizing up, as it does run small.

Best Oversized Bag

3. Vera Bradley Oversized Shoulder Bag

Vera Bradley

  • What We Like: spacious, water-repellent, adjustable strap
  • What We Don’t Like: spot-clean only
  • Size Range: one size
  • Promising Review: “When I am traveling, I can shove my [Microsoft Surface computer]...a bag with cords and such, my wallet, quart size bag, all the things and carry it like a crossbody. Are you kidding me? Perfection.”

Rivers predicts that oversized bags will soon make a comeback, and based on the recent popularity of the viral Cos oversized crossbody ($99), we'd have to agree. While this Vera Bradley option is not quite as big as the Cos (the crossbody is 15.59 inches wide by 15.82 inches tall while the Vera Bradley is 11 inches wide by 14 inches tall), you can still fit a ton inside, including your 13-inch laptop. We also like that its twill fabric is water-repellent, giving it an edge over the Cos for your daily commute.

Best Sweater Vest

4. Viottiset Oversized Sweater Vest

Viottiset

  • What We Like: extra-long length, flattering cut, high softness factor, accurate depiction
  • What We Don’t Like: one size fits all
  • Size Range: one size, hand-wash only
  • Promising Review: "This vest looks just like the picture. So comfy and has a good material."

Between its layer-ready fit and its preppy houndstooth print, this high-style sweater vest is reportedly large enough to wear over your button-up shirts, dresses and tees while covering up your backside. Better yet, it's not itchy, according to its legions of Amazon fans, but rather has a softness to it that will be nice and cozy. The downside? It's hand-wash only—something we're not huge fans of when it comes to getting the most bang for our fashion buck.

  • What We Like: bold pop of color, flattering silhouette, warm
  • What We Don’t Like: may be shorter than it appears, hand-wash only
  • Size Range: S to XL
  • Promising Review: “I’m obsessed with this sweater. I’ve bought it in multiple colors, and I have gotten many compliments on it. ... It’s perfect for a messy top bun and cute earrings for a Friday outfit at work!”
  • Fit Recommendation: size down

Ah, the power of a good turtleneck. This Rose Red style from Amazon will not only add a bold pop of color to your ensemble (though you can choose from more than ten other shades), it offers an easy elegance that's right on trend for fall 2023. Shoppers say it also serves to keep you plenty warm in chillier weather. It may be worth sizing down, however, as it does tend to run large.

Best Mules

6. Sorel Leather Hi-Line Mules

Sorel

  • What We Like: real waterproof leather, stabilizing block heel, high quality
  • What We Don’t Like: may not be suitable for individuals with specific foot conditions, like plantar fasciitis
  • Size Range: 5 to 12
  • Fit Recommendation: consider sizing down

Sorel is a brand we know and trust when it comes to quality, making these mules attractive right from the get-go. We also love that these are made of a waterproof full-grain leather with a rubber outsole, meaning your feet will stay nice and dry, even in a bout of November rain. Keep in mind that since mules are open at the back, they may not provide the same level of support as your go-to boots or flats, so it's important to go for a snugger fit.

Best Jeans

7. Levi's 311 Jeans

Levi's

  • What We Like: regular, short and long inseams, stretchy, comfortable, don't shrink in wash
  • What We Don’t Like: color may differ from photos
  • Size Range: 24 short to 34 long
  • Promising Review: “These fit perfectly in length and width. I’ve bought many more!”
  • Fit Recommendation: regular sizing

Whether you're of the Gen Z mindset that skinny jeans are *so* over or you're a diehard fan who rejoiced at seeing them on the fall/winter 2023 runways, it's hard to find fault in this classic Levi's style. They feature a universally flattering dark wash and a stretchy fit that tons of Amazon reviewers called super comfortable. With regular, short and long inseams available, you won't have to guess to find the perfect pair, either.

Best Sweater Dress

8. Anrabess Sweater Dress

Anrabess

  • What We Like: high-quality material, good stretch and softness, warm
  • What We Don’t Like: may be too long for short shoppers, may shrink, slightly itchy
  • Size Range: XS to XL
  • Promising review: “I love the feel of this dress, it's soo soft and stretchy...really cute too! I bought it for the winter and it's extremely warm, which is a plus. ”
  • Fit Recommendation: size down

While any sweater dress will be convenient—simply throw it on with a pair of knee-high boots and you'll be good to go—we like that this one has a good amount of stretch that will make it easy to pull on over your head and be comfortable for all-day wear. Amazon shoppers say it's on the warmer side, too, so you'll be able to sport it well past the season. Be sure to follow the care instructions, as it reviewers say it can shrink.

Best Sherpa Jacket

9. Levi's Sherpa Jacket

Levi's

  • What We Like: warm, knitted cuffs, standing collar, adjustable drawcord waist
  • What We Don’t Like: some find it bulky
  • Size Range: XS to 4X
  • Promising Review: “So cute and toasty. Get lots of compliments. Oversized but doesn't look freakishly baggy.”
  • Fit Recommendation: size up for a more relaxed fit

This sherpa jacket from Levi's will be your BFF this fall. The pink plaid print affords just the splash of color Rivers suggests seeking out for this season, but we're even more impressed by its well thought-out details. The ultra-warm sherpa fabric gives way to rib-knit cuffs and a standing collar, both of which are designed to keep the wind from blowing through at the sleeves and neck. There's a hidden adjustable drawcord at waist for a better fit, too.

Best Set

10. Anrabess Wide-Leg Sweater Set

Anrabess

  • What We Like: drawstring bottoms, high quality, mix and match
  • What We Don’t Like: pants may run a bit short
  • Size Range: XS to XL
  • Promising Review: “Soft and comfy, like mac and cheese for the body! Love this—runs on the small side but is stretchy and forgiving. Great travel outfit”
  • Fit Recommendation: normal size

Our cozy era starts with this two-piece set, which has been described by happy buyers as like "mac and cheese for the body." (Read? It's comfy as hell.) It includes a matching knit sweater and a pair of wide-leg, drawstring pants, both of which have a slouchier fit and can be mixed and matched with other items in your wardrobe. "Thick and warm" are two more terms we'd associate with this set, which is available in more than 15 pretty neutrals.

Best Tailored Pants

11. Grapent Wide-Leg Pants

Grapent

  • What We Like: trendy silhouette, don't wrinkle, wash well, elastic back waist
  • What We Don’t Like: fit may vary by color
  • Size Range: XS to XXL
  • Promising Review: “I’m so picky about wide-leg pants. ... These are literally fantastic, especially for this price. The elastic in the back of the waistband is great. ... You’d never know they’re an elastic-waist pant, as they look formal with the styling. .... [They feel] like pajamas, basically. Fabric is great. Pockets are perfect.”
  • Fit Recommendation: size down

Rivers says draped pants are in, and this pair is perfect for achieving that relaxed look. Even more exciting, you won't have to bust out the iron or even the steamer, since shoppers claim the 100 percent polyester fabric lives up to the company's wrinkle-free claims. The elastic back waist also adds an extra element of comfort. (We'll be reaching for these around that time of the month, thank you very much.) Depending on your height, these may be too long without a good heel, but it's nothing a little hemming can't fix.

Best Dress

12. Staud Wool Aldrin Dress

Staud

  • What We Like: layered look, warm, naturally water-repellent, designer quality
  • What We Don’t Like: limited size range, pricey, hand-wash only
  • Size Range: XS to XL
  • Fit Recommendation: normal size

Can you say preppy perfection? With poplin peek-a-boo edges and a classic cable sweater pattern, this Staud dress gives off a layered effect you won't have to work for. More than that, however, it's made with a 100 percent pure wool material, which will keep you both ultra-warm and dry, since its a natural insulator that repels water, making it worthy of its high price tag.

Best Chelsea Boots

13. Soda Pilot Boots

Soda

  • What We Like: elastic panels for easy on and off, wide sizing available
  • What We Don’t Like: not real leather, may be too wide for slimmer calves and ankles, scuff easily
  • Size Range: 5.5 to 11 wide
  • Promising Review: “Very stylish and comfy. I like the rounded toe. Also I have kind of large ankles/calves and often have trouble finding boots that fit comfortably. These fit the bill.”
  • Fit Recommendation: size down half a size

Chelsea boots are here to stay. If you don't yet have a pair, this Soda Pilot pair will be a good way to test the waters. They're affordable, for starters. While the synthetic material isn't advertised as being waterproof, more than one reviewer called out their ability to keep their feet dry, even in heavier snow and rain. The have elastic gores at the sides to help you get them on and off and are reportedly lightweight, despite their thick material and block heel.

Best Coat

14. Ladiyo Classic Coat

Ladiyo

  • What We Like: timeless style, warm, not too long for short women, lined
  • What We Don’t Like: colors may vary from photo, hand-wash only, may smell upon arrival
  • Size Range: S to XL
  • Promising Review: “It looks sleek and beautiful on, really clean lines and no funky button or seams to be found. It is also WARM. Looks good, feels good, what else is there?!”
  • Fit Rcommendation: size up

A fall-drobe triple threat, this chic find offers style, quality and warmth, making it our top choice for an Amazon fall coat. The tie closure will help with the fit, and a high percentage of shoppers say the length hits at just the right spot, even if you're on the shorter side. The cotton and polyester fabric is heavier, too, so you can actually use it to bundle up—it's not just for looks.

Best Vegan Leather Bag

15. Melie Bianco Carrie Bag

Melie Bianco

  • What We Like: vegan, recycled materials, removable pouch, unique design, PVC-FREE
  • What We Don’t Like: limited color selection
  • Size Range: one size
  • Promising Review: “I wanted a purse that is light, fun and practical all at the same time. ... I’m so delighted at the pretty pleated exterior and incredibly soft interior. I [als0] love the matching pouch, which is very versatile.”

Melie Bianco may be best known for its animal-friendly Bottega Veneta lookalike Brigitte bag ($150) but the brand also boasts some incredibly unique styles. Case in point? This accordion-esque Carrie purse, which features a one-of-a-kind expandable design that's big enough for a mini iPad ($469), a water bottle, your wallet, sunglasses and more. We can also confirm that the brand's vegan leather is every bit as buttery-smooth and supple as the real deal—so much so that we truly can't tell the difference. The strap is padded for all day wear and there's even a matching zip pouch inside for added storage. Though the color selection is limited on Amazon, you can find a few more on the brand's site.

Best Sweatshirt

16. Automet Half-Zip Sweatshirt

Automet

  • What We Like: thick, comfortable, pockets, lululemon vibes
  • What We Don’t Like: boxier shape may not be flattering on everyone
  • Size Range: S to XL
  • Promising Review: “I was pleasantly surprised with this. ... It has a good weight. It is the perfect length. ... The color was true to that in the picture. I will probably order another.”
  • Fit Recommendation: size up

If your idea of a fall jacket is more like an oversized sweatshirt, this Amazon pick will be just what the doctor ordered. It's made from a thick polyester and cotton blend that reviewers say is both warm and comfortable—two must-haves when it comes to a good half-zip. Plus, the long sleeves have thumbholes for extra warmth. While it's not quite lululemon quality, the design looks quite similar to the brand's Scuba funnel-neck half-zip ($118) for a fraction of the price.

Best Transitional Dress

17. Floerns Corduroy Dress

Floerns

  • What We Like: transitions well between seasons, good quality, not too short
  • What We Don’t Like: color may vary from photos
  • Size Range: XS to XXL
  • Promising Review: “Love this dress! ... It’s very comfortable, a good length and it has pockets!! What more could you ask for?”
    Fit Recommendation: size up

Part dress, part overall, this sweet design has two front pockets to tuck your fingers into when it gets a little nippy and comes in more than 15 seasonal hues. We also like the longer length, which makes it a bit more modest. Since it's layer-friendly, you can easily take it from summer with a short-sleeve tee to fall with a longer-sleeve mock neck. It does fit on the slimmer side, however, so be sure to size up.

Best Turtleneck

18. Reoria Turtleneck Bodysuit

Reoria

  • What We Like: stretchy, comfortable, soft, good quality
  • What We Don’t Like: see-through, darker colors can bleed in the wash, hand-wash only
  • Size Range: S to XXL
  • Promising Review: “It's comfortable and great for layering, or just wearing on its own. It's a nice staple to have.”
  • Fit Recommendation: normal size

Bodysuits provide a smooth and seamless look that make them the unsung heroes of fall layering. This one from Amazon has nearly 4,000 fans for the comfort and stretch its cotton and spandex blend provides. It offers high quality for the $20 price tag and shoppers say it doesn't ride up when you're moving around in it—a common annoyance with other bodysuit brands.

Best Combat Boots

19. Dr. Martens Leather Shriver Boots

Dr. Martens

  • What We Like: well-made, durable, real leather, air-cushioned sole, versatile style
  • What We Don’t Like: narrow fit, minimal arch support.
  • Size Range: 5 to 11
  • Promising Review: “I am so happy that I found these boots. They are very well-made, fit perfectly (I am a US size 8 and that's what I ordered) and I love the style. It's been years since I've had Docs and these do not disappoint.”
  • Fit Recommendation: normal size

Dr. Martens go with fall like apple cider goes with donuts. This classic combat style will be a closet favorite all year round (for years to come, considering the brand's renowned durability) but they work particularly well in the colder months thanks to the sturdy leather exterior, strong stitching and water-resistant rubber soles. Plus, you’ll look badass in them whether you’re wearing a floral dress or flannel shirt and leggings.

Best Shacket

20. Prettygarden Plaid Shacket

Prettygarden

  • What We Like: warmer material, soft, machine washable
  • What We Don’t Like: shorter shoppers will likely need to hem it
  • Size Range: S to L
  • Promising Review: “Let me tell you....I love this long flannel. It is a heavier weight flannel material, much nicer than I had expected. The fit is great. ... Don't let this one get away!”
    Fit Recommendation: normal size

The shacket took over our closets in 2021 and we've never looked back. The perfect throw-on-and-go piece, they're cozy, keep you warm on cooler days and look super cute. We like this one for its softness, longer length and side pockets, which offer easy access to your phone. Those with petite frames will likely need to take it to the tailor, however, since it's mid-thigh length can fall well below the thigh on shorter gals.

Best Mock Sweater

21. Cable-Stitch Mock Sweater

Cable Stitch

  • What We Like: high quality, not itchy, gets softer with wear
  • What We Don’t Like: dry clean only, may be too cropped for tall shoppers
  • Size Range: XS to XL
  • Promising Review: “LOVE this sweater! It’s soft, easy to wear and is quality made. ... Very comparable to other name-brand sweaters.”
  • Fit Recommendation: size down

The boxy look of this mock-neck sweater is cool and androgynous and has a slightly oversized fit that we're dying to cuddle up in. Its acrylic, nylon, wool and spandex blend gets even cozier after a few trips to the cleaner's, according to Amazon customers, and it comes in several neutral tones you'll want to stock up on.

Best Denim Jacket

22. Evaless Distressed Denim Jacket

Evaless

  • What We Like: breathable cotton, high quality, edgy distressing, buttons at the wrist cuffs
  • What We Don’t Like: hand-wash only, buttons rattle
  • Size Range: XS to XL
  • Promising Review: “I love this jacket so much! The vibrant color is perfect and the distressed look is very cute. Great quality!"
  • Fit Recommendation: size down for a relaxed fit.

Another classic piece with a slightly embellished twist is this black denim jacket from Evaless. While it's got all of the traditional elements you'd expect from a good jean jacket (cotton construction, sturdy silver buttons), it's also got gentle distressing and a frayed tasseled hem throughout for a bit of added edge. Remember to size down if you're looking for that cool girl boyfriend fit.

Best Shawl

23. Ohayomi Soft Shawl

Ohayomi

  • What We Like: extra-large size, high quality, soft, can be worn multiple ways
  • What We Don’t Like: wrinkles easily
  • Size Range: one size
  • Promising Review: “I had been looking for other [shawls] in stores like J Crew and they were around $200. ... I ordered this one as my shawl ... and it was amazing quality and truly beautiful.”
  • Fit Recommendation: normal size

Since Rivers predicted that bigger will be better when it comes to accessories this fall, we sought out this extra-large shawl for travel days and all-around warmth. Versatile by nature, it can be worn multiple ways (draped over your shoulders, wrapped around your neck, ect.) and more than 1,000 Amazon shoppers have vouched for its quality by giving it a perfect 5-star review. "Feels and looks way more expensive than it is," wrote one, with another adding, "It was very soft and was of ample size to wrap comfortably. I would buy this in other colors." Good thing there are nearly 15 to choose from!

Best Leggings

24. Hue Faux Leather Leggings

Hue

  • What We Like: comfortable, stretchy, vegan
  • What We Don’t Like:
  • Size Range: XS to XL
  • Promising Review: “I bought a bunch of fake leather leggings to try, and these were my fave by far. Very comfortable to put on and wear, surprisingly flattering, especially to the tummy.”
  • Fit Recommendation: size up

Coming in four fall-approved colors, these are stretchy and relatively warm, thanks to their polyester leatherette material, which gives the look and feel of the real thing without any of the guilt. More than one shopper also lauded them for their comfort, which they say is on par with the brand's famous tights.

Best Midi Skirt

25. Keasmto Midi Skirt

Keasmto

  • What We Like: pockets, elasticized waist, machine washable, part silk
  • What We Don’t Like: wrinkles easily
  • Size Range: XXS to XL
  • Promising Review: “Absolutely worth every penny! Looks amazing paired with a T-shirt, cute shoes and statement earrings.”
  • Fit Recommendation: size up for relaxed fit

Remember the cool midi skirts you ordered from dEliA*s back in the '90s? Yeah, they're back with a vengeance. This leopard-print version allows you to go grungy with combat boots or get a little more Western with some cowboy kicks. It's also got a stretchy waist that means you won't have to suck in if you have a few too many carbs. It's machine washable, saving you a trip to the dry cleaner's, and the best part? It has pockets.

Best Cardigan

26. Merokeety Waffle Cardigan

Merokeety

  • What We Like: pockets, lightweight, good softness and stretch, comfy
  • What We Don’t Like: can snag easily
  • Size Range: S to XXL
  • Promising Review: “This cardigan is a lightweight, stretchy, soft and comfortable item. Just perfect for ... late summer mornings when the temperatures are low enough to warrant an extra layer. I also find it to be very fashionable. Love the color.”
  • Fit Recommendation: size up

Cardigans are a dime a dozen, but we like this waffle-knit option in particular for its bat sleeves and pockets, which lend themselves to those extra details Rivers noted to look for in your elevated fall fashion. There's a wide array of colors to choose from, ranging from timeless neutrals to jewel tones, and its little touch of spandex allows for some comfy stretch. For a flattering oversized fit, size up.

Best Booties

27. Andre Assous Leather Naia Booties

Andre Assous

  • What We Like: comfortable, leather detailing, elastic gore for easy on and off
  • What We Don’t Like: may be too small for wider feet
  • Size Range: 6 to 9
  • Fit Recommendation: normal size

We've tried on a lot of boots in our day, and Andre Assous makes some of the most comfortable to ever touch our feet. (More specifically, the brand's Winter booties, $149, are like walking on a cloud.) And we've got a sneaking suspicion that this pair, which features a square toe box as opposed to the Winter's pointed one and a more stable block heel, will be even more comfy. We love the less than $100 price tag, and the 3-inch lift will be not too low and not too high.

Best Sweater

28. The Drop Josephine Sweater

The Drop

  • What We Like: machine washable, expensive looking, soft, unique cutout, doesn't shrink
  • What We Don’t Like: can be itchy, may be too long for short shoppers
  • Size Range: XS to 5X
  • Promising Review: “I am really impressed with this sweater. It’s excellent quality and looks like it’s way more expensive than it was.”
  • Fit Recommendation: size down

We like Amazon's The Drop brand for affordable, quality basics, and this Josephine sweater is a perfect example of why. With nearly 400 perfect 5-star reviews, it's luxe enough looking to be mistaken for cashmere and on the softer side. (It's said to be a tad bit itchy, but for the price, we can't complain.) We also like that the brand offers a nice, wide size range—this piece goes up to 5X—though shorter shoppers do say it tends to be a smidge long.

Best Mini Skirt

29. Idealsanxun Plaid Skirt

Idealsanxun

  • What We Like: good quality for the value, comfortable when sized correctly
  • What We Don’t Like: hardware can be finicky, no stretch
  • Size Range: XS to XXL
  • Promising Review: “This skirt was the perfect length and gave me enough roominess in the waist. ... Loved how soft it was and the light pink detail in the plaid.”
  • Fit Recommendation: size up

Can't resist a preppy plaid? Neither can we! More than looking cute, this printed skirt is constructed with a warm polyester and wool blend that will keep your upper legs warm when the wind is howling. Amazon buyers noted that it can be a bit snug, since there's little to no stretch, so you may want to size up for a more comfortable fit, but once you find it, this should be plenty cozy.

Best Leather Bag

30. Hobo Leather Merrin Bag

Hobo

  • What We Like: luxe leather, two-in-one style, multiple organizational pockets
  • What We Don’t Like: straps may be too long, pricey
  • Size Range: one size
  • Promising Review: “Not only was it hands-free, but there [is] no more switching shoulders from side to side when one shoulder [can't] take it anymore. ...It was one of my most used gifts I’ve ever received. ... Another [positive?] When worn with the straps pulled, it folds up in such a way as to dissuade even the most seasoned pickpockets.”

Hobo makes some of the most well-organized, smartly designed bags around, and this little number is a prime example of the brand's genius. Just a pull on the strap will convert it from a traditional shoulder bag to a two-strap backpack. Regardless of how you choose to carry it, you'll be privy to plenty of storage—it's got two exterior pockets, plus three more on the inside to keep your things in order. It's also crafted from a genuine, durable leather that shoppers can only describe as "buttery."

Best Blazer

31. Niubia Knit Blazer

Niubia

  • What We Like: unstructured fit, tons of colors
  • What We Don’t Like: can wrinkle, hand-wash only, may be boxy on some
  • Size Range: S to XXL
  • Promising Review: “Feels nice and expensive and looks great!”
  • Fit Recommendation: normal size

If you're tired of playing it safe with neutrals, why not take Rivers' advice and go for a bright, attention-commanding red? This fiery blazer is unstructured, which makes it easy to push up the sleeves, and has a bit of stretch for comfort. We also like the more casual fit, which allows you to wear it to work, yes, but also pair with jeans for a less formal lunch date.

Best Trousers

31. Tronjori Wide-Leg Trousers

Tronjori

  • What We Like: short and long inseam options,
  • What We Don’t Like:
  • Size Range: XS to 2X
  • Promising Review: “Super comfy and flattering pants. ... Leg room is spacious.”
  • Fit Recommendation: normal size

For cool workwear that’s actually comfortable, trousers are a must. These billowy pants have a high waist that experts say can lengthen legs and create the illusion of hips for those with straighter frames. The heavy polyester fabric of these ones keep them structured enough for the office, but the wide legs mean they're still a breeze (quite literally) to style. “You can’t ever go wrong with a button-down and drapier pants,” Rivers says.

Best Sweater Coat

33. Ebifin Sweater Coat

Ebifin

  • What We Like: machine-washable, good transitional piece
  • What We Don’t Like: sleeves may be too long
  • Size Range: S to XXL
  • Promising Review: “It is comfortable and fairly warm. It is a perfect alternative to a light jacket."
  • Fit Recommendation: size down

This sweater coat has those trendy country club vibes in spades. With a thicker weight, it's a good piece to reach for on days it's a little chilly but too warm for an actual jacket. Because it hits above the knee, it will also go perfectly with all your favorite skinny jeans and riding boots. However, if you're petite, you should keep in mind that the sleeves might need to be hemmed, since they tend to run a bit long.

Best Jacket

34. Etcyy Quilted Jacket

Etcyy

  • What We Like: comfortable, well-made, large pockets, standing collar
  • What We Don’t Like: can cause static, hand-wash only, color may vary from photos
  • Size Range: XS to XL
  • Promising Review: “Not only is this the cutest jacket ever...but it is also so comfy, so soft and it fits perfectly. It's not too bulky or big, not too long, it's definitely more of a fashion jacket than a jacket to keep you warm, but it does keep me pretty warm. Very beautiful quality, too."
  • Fit Recommendation: size up for a relaxed fit

Take it from our fashion editor: Barn coats are the next big thing in jackets. This quilted version is already racking up rave reviews on Amazon for its comfy, oversized fit and well-made construction. The side pockets are nice and roomy (all the better to keep your hands toasty on a chilly day), and while it won't quite replace your winter jacket, it can hold its own on a fall day in New England.

Best Satin Piece

35. Acevog Satin Blouse

Acevog

  • What We Like: luxe fabric, nice weight
  • What We Don’t Like: no buttons to keep it secure, snags easily, needs to be ironed, may be too long for those with short torsos
  • Size Range: S to 3X
  • Promising Review: “This...[looks] lightweight but not sheer. It can be styled for different looks."
  • Fit Recommendation: normal size

Trade in your stiff work shirt for this luxurious silky number that's right on trend with Rivers' fashion forecast of comfortable elegance. With the option to wear it open or tie it at the front or back, it provides plenty of wear, particularly if you've got a longer torso. (It may be too long for shorties.) While we'd opt for the classic black, you can also go for the gusto in a bolder shade of royal blue or rose red.
