Summer in New York is nothing like the way Ella Fitzgerald posits it in “Manhattan.” It’s not romantic, it’s a sauna in hell. The only thing Fitzgerald got right was the blessed, cooling air that comes with the arrival of a subway train: “The subway charms a soul when balmy breezes blow to and fro.”
Every year, I brace myself for the brutal, humid heat. And I cracked. The same way my little California heart cracked in the winter and led me to buy a Canada Goose parka, it again has gone berserk as I frantically attempt to create a summer wardrobe that just allows me to survive.
