ICYMI: Sweet Magnolias has finally returned for season four after a one-year hiatus. The popular drama originally premiered in 2020, and it immediately captured the hearts of viewers everywhere with its feel-good vibe and small-town charm. Although the series has presented its fair share of cliffhanger endings, I never expected it to reveal so much in the first episode of a season.
I recently tuned into Sweet Magnolias season four, which is now streaming on Netflix. I was so distracted by the surprise breakout cast members—Ty (Carson Rowland) and Annie (Anneliese Judge), who undeniably stole the show—that I nearly missed all the clues pointing to that mind-blowing twist at the end of episode one. (Spoilers ahead, so please proceed with caution.)
The first episode of season four ends with Maddie (Joanna García Swisher) and Cal (Justin Bruening) dropping a bombshell on their friends and family. You see, they invite everyone to what’s supposed to be a Halloween party. And when their loved ones least expect it, the couple surprises everyone by getting married right then and there.
The question is: How will this surprise affect the sweet magnolias’ relationship moving forward? Well, Dana Sue (Brooke Elliott) and Helen (Heather Headley) are understandably upset when they realize that Maddie kept the wedding a secret from them. Although they seem to come around as the wedding progresses, I think this moment will be a defining milestone in their friendship.
Can they forgive Maddie for keeping the wedding a secret, particularly Dana Sue? The chef has been incessantly bugging Maddie about wedding planning because she wants something to look forward to after her vow renewal. And Maddie straight up lies to her face, saying she and Cal want to enjoy their engagement and not rush into marriage. Since their friendship is already on thin ice, this could be interpreted as a betrayal. And poor Helen is about to be right in the middle.
