1. Setting Spray

Sephora

It shouldn’t be surprising to see this one on the list, but a setting spray is truly the key to a long-lasting look. “If you want your makeup to last all day and night, use a setting spray to prevent color transfer, shifting, fading and creasing,” says Kaye. Once you go through your makeup routine, the final step should be a few spritzes of setting spray all over your face, neck and chest.

To find the best setting spray for your skin type, Kaye recommends looking for specific ingredients: If you have dry skin, consider aloe vera and/or other hydrating ingredients like hyaluronic acid and rose water. Kaye also suggests looking for a lower alcohol content to avoid drying out the skin further. If you have normal skin, opt for setting sprays with equal amounts of alcohol, water and polymer content for a great grip that’s not heavy or drying (like Skindinavia Bridal 24 Hour Setting Spray below). If you have oily skin, Kaye recommends getting a setting spray with a low water content and oil-absorbing agents like charcoal to prevent a greasy T-zone or a dewy finish (especially if you’re going for a matte look).

Expert’s Recommendation: Milani Make It Charcoal Setting Spray ($11; $8); Skindinavia Bridal 24 Hour Setting Spray ($29); Charlotte Tilbury Airbrush Flawless Setting Spray ($36)

2. A Makeup Sealant

Sephora

The name is self-explanatory, but if you’re looking to seal in your makeup, you’ll need this in your collection. The liquid formula can be added to any of your products to make them smudge- and transfer-proof, so you can rock your face paint all night long.

Kaye’s go-to makeup sealant? The Make Up For Ever Aqua Seal. “The Aqua Seal is lightweight, and will intensify pigments, while also giving you longer-lasting results,” explains Kaye. For best results, Kaye recommends adding one drop at a time to your makeup brush until the bristles are saturated. Then, dip the wet brush into your powder products; if you’re using a liquid product like a foundation or a highlighter, you can mix one to two drops with your products before applying it directly to your face.

Expert’s Recommendation: Makeup Forever Aqua Seal ($21)

3. A Translucent Powder

Amazon

A setting spray gets the job done, but don’t sleep on setting powders. “Powder is used to set, mattify and reduce tackiness from heavier cream products and special effects products like latex, gelatin and waxes,” explains Kaye. While all skin types can join in on the fun, people with oily skin will benefit the most from the powder’s ability to control oil and shine throughout the day.

Kaye recommends the Mehron Colorset Powder, which is designed specifically for Halloween looks. The translucent product comes with a powder puff, so you can easily press the formula onto your makeup without causing it to smudge. One reviewer raves about the setting powder, saying: “My makeup stayed on the whole night and didn't smear at all. Normally with cream makeup, the slightest brush takes a chunk off, but not with this!” Kaye suggests covering your entire face with the powder to ensure best results.

Expert’s Recommendation: Mehron Colorset Powder ($12)

OK, now you can rock your Euphoria eyeshadow or classic skeleton face makeup without any worries.
