In 2020, the Year of the Rat was, fittingly, all about survival. Then in 2021, we had the Year of the Ox—which was about anchoring ourselves to a new reality—and in 2022, we entered the Year of the Tiger, signifying big changes ahead. In 2023, we’re happy to announce that there’s luck on the horizon: Welcome to the The Year of the Rabbit (aka the luckiest animal in the Chinese zodiac).
For those who don’t know, the Lunar New Year (referred to as Tết in Vietnam and Seollal in Korea) is a Chinese holiday that signifies the season of spring cleaning and new beginnings. It falls on January 22 this year, where the lunar calendar—upon which the holiday is based—is entering a new moon cycle (as opposed to Western calendars, which start on January 1). Each cycle is symbolized by a different animal from the Chinese zodiac elements, and this year, we’re welcoming in 2023 with the auspicious rabbit. “The rabbit is the luckiest of the 12 animals of the zodiac and symbolizes energy, elegance and beauty,” writes Kathryn Wortley for the Japan Times. “The Year of the Rabbit is predicted to be a year of hope, largely because the rabbit is associated with peace, prosperity and longevity in Asia…it moves steadily toward its goals, regardless of any negativity or problems encountered.”
So, while there are many ways to celebrate the Lunar New Year (like decorating with red and feasting with family and friends) we’re honing in our favorite tradition: Gift-giving. Across the fashion board, designers seem to be calling on the rabbit for inspiration—from rabbit key rings from Bottega Veneta and Louis Vuitton to bags with bunny ears from Loewe. (It’s also worth mentioning that red is the emblematic color of Lunar New Year—and the hue is popping up everywhere in interiors right now). Plus, we’ve seen a number of beauty brands releasing limited edition, Lunar New Year collections, with our personal favorite being Charlotte Tilbury’s Lucky New Year Face Kit (number four on this list). Ahead, we’ve rounded up 21 of the best Lunar New Year’s gifts—from designer bags and luxury fragrances to healing wellness sets that’ll offer a fresh start for the year ahead.
