Royal News Roundup: a New Baby, a New Throwback of Diana & a New Holiday Declared by the Queen

Here, all the royal news you need to know for the week of November 12, 2020.

  • This week, Camilla Parker Bowles, 73, received a brand-new royal title: Colonel-in-Chief of The Rifles (an infantry regiment of the British Army). In honor of the momentous occasion, Bowles appeared in a virtual video message, where she expressed her excitement about the highly coveted honor. For the occasion, Clarence House also released a never-before-seen portrait of Bowles.

  • Speaking of the Duchess of Cornwall, the royal recently hosted a special event at Clarence House and, lucky for us, she offered a rare glimpse at her eclectic decor. On World Osteoporosis Day, Bowles hosted a tea at her home for the Royal Osteoporosis Society. On Twitter, the duchess shared a snap from the socially-distanced event, which shows the royal surrounded by a few members of the organization in her living room.
  • Over the weekend, while Queen Elizabeth and the working members of the royal family gathered at the Cenotaph in London to pay tribute to late British troops in honor of Remembrance Sunday, Meghan Markle and Prince Harry paid a visit to the Los Angeles National Cemetery to celebrate privately. For the occasion, the Duchess of Sussex opted for a custom, maxi-length, belted wool coat by designer Brandon Maxwell.

  • Also for Remembrance Day, the royal family hosted a private ceremony at Westminster Abbey in honor of the 100th anniversary of the burial of the Unknown Warrior. During the event, Queen Elizabeth and Kate Middleton were seen wearing multiple poppies on their lapel. Her majesty opted for five flowers, along with a diamond brooch, while Middleton, on the other hand, wore three red poppies on her ensemble.
  • This week. Nicholas of Romania announced that he and his wife, Alina-Maria, welcomed their first child together: a baby girl named Maria Alexandra. The proud dad announced the exciting news on social media and shared an official statement, which read: “It gives me great pleasure to announce the birth of my daughter, Maria Alexandra, on 7th November at 20:05 at the Polizu Hospital in Bucharest. Alina-Maria and our daughter are both well and healthy.”
  • Princess Diana's little brother, Charles Spencer, recently treated royal fans to a rare glimpse at the late royal during her childhood days. On Twitter, the British author and journalist posted a throwback pic of himself and his sibling, and the two could probably have passed for twins (if not for the whole height difference thing).

  • On Monday—one day after the royal family attended the Remembrance Sunday ceremony in London—Kate Middleton participated in a video chat (and gave us a sneak peek at her living room) with family members of the armed forces who had lost loved ones. However, it was her new, darker, chocolate-brunette hair that really caught our attention. But her darker locks weren’t the only change. Instead of her usual gorgeous blowout, Middleton went for a sleek, straight ‘do that she kept pushed back behind her shoulders.
  • On Wednesday, Prince Harry joined the lineup for the 14th Annual Stand Up for Heroes Event. And it’s all for a good cause. The comedy and music charity event, which is a fundraiser supporting injured veterans and their families, is set to take place virtually for the first time on November 18. Don’t worry, we don’t expect that Harry will be performing a stand-up act. Instead, the Duke of Sussex has signed on as a “special guest,” although no word on exactly what that means.

  • On Thursday, the official Royal Family Instagram account announced that in honor of Queen Elizabeth’s 70-year reign, the country will be adding a new holiday to the calendar in 2022. “A four-day Bank Holiday weekend to mark The Queen’s Platinum (70th) Jubilee has been announced for June 2022,” part of the caption read. “Further plans to mark the occasion will be announced in due course.”
