Starbucks Brought 4 Secret Menu Drinks to the App (& I Tasted Them All to Bring You This Ranking)

Shh, don’t tell

starbucks secret menu review:
Starbucks

The Starbucks secret menu is far from a secret. Some fan-made customizations (like the Pink Drink) became so popular by word of mouth and internet virality that they’ve been added to the official menu. Now, the coffee chain has taken the lead with an app-only secret menu launch that came out on July 14.

Four custom drinks were added to the app for easy ordering, meaning you won’t need to manually add all the modifications yourself (or rattle them off in person to the cashier). I, a food editor and former Starbucks barista, tried all four to see if they’re worth the hype. Read on for my original photos, honest reviews and overall ranking.

P.S.: There’s also a Secret Menu Contest running from July 14 to 20. Submit your go-to secret menu customization for a chance to win a $25,000 prize.

(Note: Pricing is for tall-size drinks and rounded to the nearest dollar. The total cost may vary by location.)

4. Cookies on Top

  • What It Is: cold brew, vanilla syrup and Vanilla Sweet Cream Cold Foam, topped with cookie crumble topping
  • Price (tall): $7

If you like your coffee very lightly sweetened, this is a nice way to treat yourself without overdoing it on the sugar. A tall size gets one pump of vanilla, so it’s still pretty robust in terms of coffee flavor, and silky-smooth in texture since it’s cold brew. The cold foam offers some respite from the bitterness, while the cookie crumbles (which taste shockingly similar to Oreos) give it some dessert-inspired flair without being excessive. That said, for all the pricy modifications, they don’t make enough of an impact to be worth the cost, IMO.

3. Lemon, Tea & Pearls

  • What It Is: black tea lemonade with raspberry-flavored popping pearls
  • Price (tall): $5

I’m a big fan of Starbucks tea lemonade. While I usually opt for no Classic syrup (I like my hibiscus tart), I didn’t mind the raspberry pearls sweetening this drink a bit. Perhaps it’s because they’re sweet and sour, as well as fruity. Their texture isn’t exactly like the boba you might be imagining—these contain a slightly thickened syrup inside and the exterior is pretty flimsy, as opposed to chewy—but the flavor is pleasant. This is a solid option for non-coffee drinkers who want a modest boost of caffeine.

2. Just Add White Mocha

  • What It Is: Iced Brown Sugar Oatmilk Shaken Espresso with White Chocolate Mocha Sauce and Vanilla Sweet Cream Cold Foam
  • Price (tall): $7

This drink is giving Christmas cookies. Between the caramel-y, cinnamon-kissed notes of the base, not to mention the earthy espresso and the rich addition of white mocha, it reminds me of snacking on warm-spiced snickerdoodles by a roaring fire (yes, even though it’s iced). The cold foam dissolved much faster than in the other drinks, but the vanilla notes and creaminess still conjured memories of frosted baked goods—for me, anyway.

1. Dragonfruit Glow-Up

  • What It Is: Mango Dragonfruit Lemonade Refresher with peach juice blend, blended and topped with Vanilla Sweet Cream Cold Foam
  • Price (tall): $7

At first, I was thinking why do people put cold foam on coffee-free drinks?! Plus, we live in the era of ordering everything with oat milk, only to top it with frothed, sweetened dairy (see the “Just Add White Mocha”). Anyway, I digress—this is actually delicious. I love how the mango and peach play in the base, and the whipped cream-like vanilla notes of the foam give the drink a peach meringue pie vibe. The dragon fruit gets a bit lost alongside the drink’s sweeter components, but it’s the key to its Insta-worthy appearance.
