In the weeks leading up to my son’s birth, I regretted ever moving to Long Island. We hardly knew anyone in our town; my most reliable emergency contact to watch my daughter while I was in the hospital, aside from my husband, were friends who lived nearly four hours away.

That’s why I nearly cried when a Spoonful of Comfort box arrived at my door, shortly after we’d gotten home. Inside were fresh rolls, cookies, a ladle and two quarts of tomato soup. Our village was far away, but they were still there for us.

Other new parents raved about it too, sharing that it became their new go-to gift. So, when the brand announced its fall lineup, I was eager to try it. Is the food really that good, or is it the mere sentiment, in those bleary-eyed days of newborn life, that made it mean so much?

After sampling its fall collection, two years after my initial delivery, I’m happy to report: Canned soups these are not. Spoonful of Comfort exceeds expectations on all fronts, making it a—yes, I’m going to get all sappy here—heartwarming choice for not only new parents, but homesick college students, those recovering from a hospital stay, those grieving—or even someone who could use a warm bowl of soup and a simple, “I’m here for you, even if I can’t physically be here” moment.

Here's a breakdown of what to expect from the service, from delivery to taste test.

What Comes in a Spoonful of Comfort Delivery?

Packages start at $99, for a Build-Your-Own-Soup Package to $280 for the Cooking Comforts Soup Package (which includes a three-quart enameled Heritage Dutch oven, apron, oven mitt, pot holder and kitchen towel, in addition to food and the brand’s signature keepsake ladle). I tried the Classic Fall Soup Package ($105), and shared the same package with my parents in Florida, to get their perspective. Now, you may be thinking, $105 for a soup dinner?! I could ship Campbell’s for less! You could, sure. But this is an entirely different experience, and cost-wise, it’s more on par with having flowers delivered and other food gift baskets.

The Classic Fall Soup package lets you choose from one of five soups—chicken noodle, loaded baked potato, tomato basil, garden vegetable or chicken and wild rice. You can select two quarts of one flavor, or choose one of four mix-and-match flavors. I opted for the latter, so I could sample the garden vegetable and chicken and wild rice.

You’ll also receive a half-dozen Italian-style Bacci dinner rolls, a greeting card, customizable note card, metal ladle and half-dozen cookies in your choice of flavor (chocolate chip, pumpkin chocolate chip, snickerdoodle, triple chocolate chip or oatmeal raisin). For an upcharge, you can also add on other “extra care” items, like Chai tea or a pumpkin spice candle. For an extra $60, you can go full cozy and throw in a fuzzy polyester throw blanket.

Order & Delivery

Customizing your soup package is as easy as picking out a bouquet of flowers online; the website is streamlined and easy to navigate. (You can search by occasion or the type of package you want to send, sending just cookies or non-perishable foods, for example, or seeing which vegan bundles are available.)

At the checkout, you can choose between a scheduled delivery date, which starts at $15, or pay a $10 flat fee if you’re “flexible,” meaning it can be delivered within one to three days of ordering. And if you don’t know where to send the package but you want to send something, you can select “no address” and have a gift announcement emailed to your recipient, allowing them to decide when and where to send it.

So, How Does the Food Taste?

The Garden Vegetable Soup

Let’s be honest: Vegetable soup can be watery and mushy. Thankfully, that wasn’t the case here. The tomato-y base was hearty, almost like a thin gazpacho or puree, making the meal more filling. There was a solid mix of vegetables, too—including zucchini and sweet corn—which were tender while maintaining a little snap for textural contrast. The tomato flavor really shone through, so if you’re a tomato soup fan but prefer something a bit more robust, this is the way to go.

The Chicken & Wild Rice Soup

Chicken & Wild Rice soup is my favorite, so I had high expectations here. While I wish this were a creamy soup, it still delivered, with a rustic, homemade flavor and a rich broth that was savory, not salty. The meat and vegetables were plentiful, and while the rice seemed to dissolve a little, if anything, it made the soup a bit thicker, satisfying that “I wish it were creamy” feeling without the cream. This soup was a serious crowd-pleaser, even among my veggie-averse kids.

The Bread

These rolls are like little pillows, with a very subtle sweetness to them. My kids wanted to eat them by the bagful, and they were just sturdy enough to sop up extra broth. Honestly, I aspire to bake dinner rolls like these.

The Oatmeal Raisin Cookies

Soft and chewy, with a robust-but-not-overpowering cinnamon flavor, these cookies are what you hope for in an oatmeal raisin (no crunchy, particle board-like texture here). Almost every bite had plump—not gummy—raisins to boot.

The Verdict

The flavor is fantastic, the package ships with minimal waste (even the boxes have a decorative print inside and are designed to be turned inside out and reused) and the portions are solid. (With the rolls and cookies, the package can solidly feed four to six people without anyone leaving the table hungry.)

All in all, it’s a great gift for anyone who’s on your mind but not close enough that you can simply drop off the homemade stuff.
