But first, what is ceramic cookware?

Ceramic cookware isn’t made entirely from ceramic. It’s metal cookware made with a ceramic nonstick coating that’s slick, scratch-resistant and non-reactive, but is considered safer to cook with than the former nonstick darling Teflon (aka PFTE or polytetrafluoroethylene), which has been found to contain unsafe chemicals like PFOA (perfluorooctanoic acid) that can leech into food.

What are the benefits of ceramic cookware?

Ceramic cookware is just as slippery as traditional nonstick materials, but it has other benefits, too.

  • It’s scratch resistant. As long as you don’t take a metal utensil to the surface, ceramic cookware is very resilient against knicks and scratches. (It won’t last forever like stainless steel or cast iron, though.)
  • It’s easy to clean. While handwashing is usually recommended for ceramic cookware, it’s as easy as wiping with a nonabrasive sponge.
  • It’s safe for high temperatures. We wouldn’t recommend blasting your burner on high heat, but ceramic cookware can typically withstand higher temperatures than older nonstick surfaces. (And often, it’s oven safe.)

Is ceramic cookware better than other types of cookware?

That really depends. Many brands make claims that their ceramic coating is “clean” or “healthy,” but that language can mean many different things (and besides, PFTE coatings no longer contain the harmful PFOAs they used to). Additionally, ceramic cookware will never last as long as cast iron, carbon steel or even Teflon—it degrades over time with exposure to heat. It’s less about being better than other types of cookware than being good at specific tasks: Ceramic cookware is easier to clean than stainless steel or cast iron, and it’s much more nonstick.

How to care for ceramic cookware:

To keep your ceramic cookware looking and functioning its best, keep in mind a few easy principles:

  • Don’t use metal cooking utensils, which could scratch the coating.
  • Handwash whenever possible since this is gentler than a dishwasher cycle.
  • Don’t overheat it and note the manufacturer’s instructions on temperature limits.

Now that you’re up to speed on the basics of ceramic cookware, here are the 12 best ceramic cookware sets to outfit your kitchen.

1. GreenPan Venice Pro Noir 13-Piece Stainless Steel Ceramic Nonstick Frying Pan Set

Best Overall Ceramic Cookware Set

GreenPan is considered one of the OGs of nonstick cookware, and is a fan favorite for its durability, even heat distribution and glassy smooth surface. The coating is made from a silicon-based material called Thermolon, which doesn’t contain PFAS or PFOA. The full 13-piece set—a 1.5-quart saucepan with lid, three-quart saucepan with lid, five-quart stockpot with straining lid and adjustable stainless steel steamer, eight-inch open fry pan, ten-inch open fry pan, 12-inch fry pan with lid and three-quart sauté pan with lid—could stock a kitchen with everything you need. However, the brand also sells individual pieces if you don’t want the whole shebang at once.

2. Five Two Essential Nonstick Skillet Set

Best Ceramic Nonstick Pan Set

For those who only need to replace an old skillet or two, this two-piece set from Food52’s Five Two line would make a fine upgrade. The ten- and 12-inch pans are fully clad (aka they’re built with layers of metals all the way from the base to the rim), and the set includes a tempered glass lid for the larger pan, plus two protective storage pads for stacking. The diamond-infused ceramic coating can withstand temperatures up to 600°F, is four times more heat conductive than copper (for superior browning) and is even metal-utensil safe.

3. Neoflam Midas 9-Piece Nonstick Ceramic Cookware Set

Best Ceramic Cookware for a Small Kitchen

If you live in a tiny apartment or have a small kitchen, you know storage space is prime real estate. These ceramic-coated pots and pans have detachable handles that allow them to convert into food storage containers and make storing a breeze. They’re also stovetop-agnostic, so they can cook on gas, electric and induction ranges.

4. Scanpan Pro IQ 10-Inch Nonstick Skillet

Best Ceramic Skillet

Scanpan comes highly recommended by chefs working in profession kitchens (who, let’s be honest, frequently turn their noses at nonstick cookware). The Danish cookware heats evenly and is oven safe up to 500°F, plus the micro-textured ceramic-titanium finish is ideal for searing and browning. The ten-inch skillet can handle everyday jobs and is a great size for two to four people.

5. Le Creuset Signature Round 5.5-Quart Dutch Oven

Best Ceramic Dutch Oven

Wait, your beloved Le Creuset is considered ceramic? Yes! While it’s often referred to as “enameled cast iron,” that enamel is a type of porcelain (and porcelain is a ceramic material). While the classic 5.5-quart Dutch oven is an investment, it will last a lifetime with proper care, and it offers superior heat distribution and retention thanks to that cast-iron core. It also works with any type of stovetop and is oven safe. The hardest part is choosing your favorite color.

6. Food52 x Dansk Kobenstyle Saucepan

Best Ceramic Saucepan

Confession: We’re obsessed with the mid-century design of Dansk cookware. So it’s a major plus that it’s as functional as it is beautiful. The enamel-coated carbon steel saucepan heats up quickly and can go from stove to table, thanks to a built-in trivet on the lid. The wooden handle means it’s not oven safe, but saucepans are better suited for soups, rice and, duh, sauces, anyway.

7. GreenPan Levels Stackable Ceramic Nonstick 11-Piece Set

Best for Storage

Ceramic cookware isn’t 100 percent scratch-proof, so stacking and storing comes with its risks (unless you remember to put a paper towel between each pan). Luckily, GreenPan’s Levels set features a multi-layer diamond-infused ceramic coating that can hold up to stacking and still perform on the stove. The included lids also double as strainers to replace your bulky colander. The entire 11-piece set measures just 13.5 inches tall when stacked.

8. Scanpan Classic Deep Sauté Pan with Lid

Most Versatile

The generous four-quart capacity and high sides make this ceramic-titanium coated sauté pan a multi-functional piece that can take on the tasks of a skillet (like browning, searing and sautéing) or a saucepan (making grains and sauces or braising). It’s oven safe up to 500°F, comes with a tempered glass lid and, according to the brand, dishwasher safe.

Caraway

9. Caraway Cookware Set

Most Stylish

It’s no secret we’re fans of Caraway’s ceramic cookware line—we gave it 90 out of 100 points in our PureWow100 review. Why? It heats up evenly and requires less oil; it’s oven safe up to 550°F; it comes with modular storage and matching lids; and it’s super easy to clean. Oh yeah, and it’s totally gorgeous in five color options. You can buy each piece individually, but the set will save you $100.

10. T-fal Initiatives Ceramic 14-Piece Set

Best Value

Ceramic cookware can be expensive, but it doesn’t have to be. Take this 14-piece set from T-fal as an example. Its ceramic nonstick coating is free from PFOAs, heat-safe up to 570°F and oven-safe up to 350°F. According to reviewers, if you’re careful to not overheat these pots and pans (or use metal utensils), they’ll perform like a more expensive set.

If you’re ready to make an investment, allow us to introduce you to All-Clad’s new Fusiontec line. Each piece is made with a steel core for even heat distribution, plus a ceramic finish for that nonstick surface. It’s compatible with all stovetops, oven safe up to 500°F and dishwasher safe, and the four-piece set comes with universal lids.
