The year was 2016... So start many of the throwback posts taking over our social media feeds this week—a viral trend that has us looking back at that memorable year, now officially an entire decade ago.

Vine was the height of comedy, "Closer" by The Chainsmokers and Halsey was on every radio station and the Snapchat dog filter reigned supreme. And the fashion? Oh, we could tell you about the fashion. Chokers, studs and lace-up tops. Skinny jeans and faux fur coats. All accessorized with those Dior sunglasses and a trendy cup of matcha in our hands.

Was some of it cringe? Perhaps. But ten years later, it turns out we'd still wear plenty of the same items that were in our closets back then (and, TBH, actually still own some of them). To prove it to you—and jump on the nostalgia train—my fellow PureWow staffers and I dived into our own archives to pull some of our favorite looks from the era...and sniffed out the modern equivalents we'd shop today.

1. Embroidered Jeans

Driftwood

PureWow Senior Content Creator Kate Kesselman is ready for jeans to get fun again: "A plain denim is so last year. We are bringing back 2016 with fun patches, prints and unique denim looks." You can start with these romantically embroidered barrel jeans from Free People, featuring hearts, bows and floral details—just in time for Valentine's Day.

2. Faux Fur Coat

Superdown

Faux fur coats were all the rage ten years ago, and they're back in full force for 2026. Here I (Senior Commerce Editor Stephanie Maida) am showing off my leopard-print number that I totally still own, but might consider updating with this pick by Superdown.

3. Suede Skirt

Sézane

"I wore this tan suede miniskirt to death in fall of 2016," reminisces Emily Brozyna, associate director of social strategy. "It could totally still work today, styled differently—maybe with a crisp white T-shirt layered under an oversized V-neck sweater. More 'cozy chic' and less 'Christian Girl Autumn.'" FYI: This suede style from Sézane nails the vibe, with a little French flair to boot.

4. Oversized Blazer

Universal Standard

Proof positive that some outfit formulas will never go out of style, Editor-in-Chief Jillian Quint shared this snap and says, "I think I was pregnant for all 12 months of 2016...but I stand by this look whether you're with child or not. Tight dress + oversized blazer + vintage boots is always a winning combo." Quint's denim blazer reminds me of this equal parts structured and slouchy one from Universal Standard—cool, but polished.

5. Denim Pencil Skirt

White House Black Market

Fashion and Beauty Director-at-Large Deena Campbell still pulls out her denim pencil skirt from 2016. "I still love denim skirts because they’re one of those rare pieces that are a wardrobe workhorse. Most days, I’ll wear mine with Samba sneakers and a cropped T-shirt. When I want to elevate things, I swap in heeled mules or knee-high boots for something a little more directional."

While her longstanding fave is from J.Crew, this similar option is a fabulous alternative, particularly because it dresses itself up with a front slit and that faux chain link belt detail.

"Remember earring jackets?" asks Candace Davison, VP of editorial. "I'm ready for their return. I loved how they added dimension and a little edge to an outfit. Ditto for those oversized cat-eye Quay glasses—I had them up until last year, when someone broke into my car and stole them. (And yes, I was wearing them at my desk one day because the sun was blinding at the office.)"

Feel like pairing your big sunnies with an edgy ear party à la 2016? Nab these these sterling silver ear jackets with marquise crystals that put a modern (and slightly more subtle) spin on the spiky look.

"This dress—from Madewell—is still in my closet," reveals Senior Director of Special Projects and Royals Rachel Bowie. "Yay polka dots for being evergreen and trendy. Yes, I wore this to a wedding in the Bay Area, but I also wore it to walk around Central Park (with a gray cardigan draped over my shoulders), to the office, brunch and more. 2016 really was the best year!" For a dotty dress that's just as versatile, I'd suggest turning to this Boden V-neck.

A lightweight, denim-esque button-down will always get a ton of mileage, especially in Director of Affiliate Strategy Pamela Masin's rotation. "That chambray is from the Gap. Truly still wear it," she says. Although the chambray options are currently limited at the brand, this organic cotton construction promises the same breathability and effortless wear.

9. Burgundy Velvet Top

ASTR the Label

Viva la velvet! "I'd totally still wear this velvet 'going out' top from Artizia (and I'm sure I still have it!)," says Executive Managing Editor Catrina Yohay. A perfect pick for winter evening outings, this ASTR the Label piece—boasting strong shoulders and elegant draping—takes the look into 2026.

10. Printed Jumpsuit

Free People

Looking back at her go-to fit, Senior Director of Social Strategy Aly Owens declares, "I will wear a jumpsuit and sneakers forever!" She's on to something, especially when it comes to travel. A good one-piece is a packing list essential, and can go from a casual outing to a dressy dinner out just by switching up your footwear. If you ask me, this wide-leg halter design checks every box.

11. Plaid Miniskirt

Halara

Pattern trends may come and go, but plaid minis are forever. Just ask Jada Page, PureWow content creator: "I still love [this skirt]! Plaid is for channeling my preppy side." You can, too, with this of-the-moment lookalike from Halara. (Psst: It has built-in shorts so you don't have to sweat about coverage.)
