If you need a sign to upgrade your jewelry collection, this is it: The new year is a great time to switch things up and elevate your look. Thankfully, we’re getting a head start, and found the coolest pieces you should have on your radar. We asked Isabela Rangel Grutman, a jewelry expert and founder of her eponymous jewelry line, to predict the top jewelry trends of 2023 and teach us how to style them for every occasion.

1. Stylish Stacking

Yes, necklace layering was cool, but now we’re giving the layering treatment to earrings and rings. A stack of statement pieces decorating your ears and fingers is taking over 2023. “This is a classic style that can be taken to the next level in 2023,” says Grutman. Play around with placement, sizes and styles. Bottom line: There are no rules in the stacking game.

Earring stacking surged in popularity in the ’70s and now it’s making a comeback in a huge way. “Everyone wants the perfect ear stack, whether it’s permanent or temporary,” Grutman reveals. Mix and match studs, hoops and huggies with abandon. Maybe even consider getting a new piercing in 2023. But if you’re not ready to add a new hole just yet, reach for ear cuffs instead for a more temporary (and pain-free) option.

As for rings, more is better in Grutman’s book. “Stack multiple thin bands (skipping thicker, large pieces) on a finger or apply your favorite rings on each finger for a fun yet elevated look,” she says. Again, mix metals, stones or both together for fashion-forward variety.

2. Body Chains

We’ve been rocking Y2K fashion and beauty all year, so it’s no surprise it’s spilled into the jewelry world. Body jewelry, specifically belly and body chains, are going to be big in 2023, Grutman predicts. “Body chains are a different way to wear jewelry than the classic popular spots, so adding a belly chain can spice up any look.”

We saw this trend back in 2021 at Spring/Summer runway shows with brands like Chanel and Acne Studios showcasing body chains in their collections. Now, celebs like Lizzo, Hailey Bieber and Rihanna are getting on the body chain train. We just hope we’re making our fellow Y2K trendsetters like Christina Aguilera, Shakira and Paris Hilton proud. So, whether you’re rocking it with a chic swimsuit or draping it on top of a dress, there are plenty of ways to incorporate a body chain into your wardrobe. “The low-rise denim era is coming up, so get excited to see this being a wardrobe staple next year,” adds Grutman.

3. Everything Emerald

Here’s your ticket to emerald city. The birthstone for May babies, this green gem is a must-have in your jewelry box. “Emeralds are a huge trend we anticipate to see, [and] mixing diamonds and emeralds is an easy way to start introducing the stone to your existing collection,” says Grutman. Etsy predicted the color was going to be the trend of 2022 and it’s definitely keeping its rightful place in 2023. The color is thought to symbolize harmony and growth, which is just what we need to ring in the new year. It’s also rooted in royalty, so who wouldn’t want to unleash their inner queen? Recently, Megan Fox sported a bit of emerald in her engagement ring and Jennifer Lopez showed off her emerald diamond bling, so expect it to be everywhere—from dazzling rings to statement earrings. “While it’s a bright color that some are not accustomed to wearing, it truly goes well with anything,” adds Grutman.
