This is the summer of blockbusters, but I think it's safe to say that one of the most hotly anticipated has been Christopher Nolan's adaptation of The Odyssey. The director peppered his film with a star-studded cast: Matt Damon (Odysseus), Anne Hathaway (Penelope, Odysseus's wife), Tom Holland (Telemachus, their son), Zendaya (Athena), Charlize Theron (Calypso) and Lupita Nyong'o (Helen of Troy) just for starters.
I usually don't go to the movie theater, but my book club spent two months reading Emily Wilson's translation of the Homeric poem in preparation for a field trip to see the film. The nearly three-hour movie was a visual feast for the eyes (I did not see it in IMAX, but now that the frame comparisons are making the rounds, I kind of wish I had). However, Nolan significantly cut down one character so crucial to the source material I was left disappointed—and confused.
