Some makeup products are born great, while others have greatness thrust upon them—thanks, in part, to the influencing powerhouse that is TikTok. But as the beauty world becomes more oversaturated (and social media becomes less about sharing your life and more about making a quick buck), users—like yours truly–are keeping their bullsh*t meters cranked all the way up. So, how’s a girl to know if something’s the real deal or a total whiff? She gets resourceful—and luckily, that’s where we come in.

The latest viral product to take over my “For You” page is Tarte’s tiny-but-mighty Colored Clay CC Undereye Corrector. With more than 10mm views, this “revolutionary” product promises users it can help “achieve ultimate dark circle defense” with instant results. And with sales up 753 percent year over year (according to a representative from Tarte), all those views are clearly translating into first-time customers and repeat buys. Intrigued by both its surge in popularity and the amazing results that filled my screen, I had to give it a try. Here's everything you need to know about Tarte’s viral Colored Clay CC Undereye Corrector, plus an in-depth test of all four shades with original photos—so you can decide if it’s worth the splurge.

What Is Tarte’s Colored Clay CC Undereye Corrector?

Is it a color corrector? Is it a concealer? Is it a CC cream? Let’s break it down.

The Tarte Cosmetics Colored Clay CC Undereye Corrector is a multitasking clay-based concealer and color corrector in one. Worn on its own or beneath foundation, it helps neutralize the appearance of dark circles thanks to color-correcting technology and powerful ingredients like caffeine, licorice extract and an array of light-reflecting clays. According to the brand, it also helps “even skin tone, reduce the appearance of wrinkles and moisturize and balance skin texture” with the help of added ingredients like squalane and sodium hyaluronate.

The product is available in four shades that are meant to be used across multiple skin tones: “red” for deep to very deep skin tones, “orange” for tan to deep skin tones, “medium-tan peach” for medium to tan skin tones and “light-medium peach” for light to medium skin tones. Now, that all sounds good in theory, but how well does it actually fair on real life skin with real dark circles? I had four editors put it to the test.

Fast Facts

  • Shades: 4 (red, orange, medium-tan peach, light-medium peach)
  • Coverage: full
  • Standout Features: waterproof, dermatologist-tested, crease-free finish
  • Standout Ingredients: colored clay, rose clay, yellow clay, purple clay, caffeine, licorice extract, squalene
  • Size: 0.08 oz

How We Tested Tarte’s Colored Clay CC Undereye Corrector

I recruited four PureWow editors representing a range of skin tones to test the four available shades. With dark circles that ranged from moderate to severe, each tester worked the Tarte Cosmetics Colored Clay CC Undereye Corrector into their existing makeup routine. Some wore it alone while others chose to layer it beneath their usual concealer or foundation. All were instructed to wear the product for at least a full workday (roughly 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.) while taking notes on the application process, longevity, feel, coverage and efficacy (i.e. how well it delivered on its dark circle eliminating claims). Here’s what they had to say.

Our Review of Tarte’s Colored Clay CC Undereye Corrector (In Every Shade)

Jazmine’s Review: Shade Red

As a longtime fan of Tarte Cosmetics, Jazmine Clarke, associate director of account management, was eager to give this product a try. “The application process was incredibly easy, and I love how I could blend it out with just my ring finger, plus a beauty blender to finish. As someone with drier skin, I'm always interested in cream products, and this one feels so smooth and sits beautifully on the skin,” she says. “The full coverage is also amazing, and it seamlessly spreads out to hide dark circles and even out my skin tone. I didn't notice any wrinkles disappear, but I think the product's ingredients could make a difference over time.”

She admits the red shade might not have been a perfect match for her skin tone, but thanks to the product’s blending abilities, it still yielded lasting results. “What truly impressed me was that there was no creasing at all throughout the day,” a pet peeve she’s struggled with in the past. “After applying my concealer on top,” she used IT Cosmetics Bye Bye Dark Spots Concealer, “everything melted together seamlessly.”

Chelsea’s Review: Shade Orange

As our resident makeup expert, beauty and cultures editor Chelsea Candelario knows a thing or two about layering products. “I don't have excessive dark circles, just a bit in the inner corners, but I believe this did a great job at covering them up,” she says. She also thought the product was incredibly easy to blend, and after trying a few different application techniques, she found “applying it with your ring finger was the easiest way to move the product across the under-eye and buff it out.” (Though word to the wise, a little goes a long way!)

Even after finishing her look with concealer and foundation, Candelario was pleasantly surprised by how lightweight the product felt. “As a combo girlie, it also didn't look oily and didn't ruin the layering in the slightest. I did notice some minor creasing, but nothing a little setting powder couldn't fix.” Her main gripe? The shade itself. “At first, the orange shade did not blend well with my concealer.” She was left with a slightly orange complexion that took a bit of mad science makeup mixing to fix. “Adding in foundation,” she used Fenty Beauty Eaze Drop Blur + Smooth Foundation Stick, “did a better job at evening out my skin tone.”

Jael’s Review: Shade Medium-Tan Peach

As someone with chronic dark circles, associate commerce strategist Jael Rucker has been on the hunt for a product that can correct and conceal while also brightening up her under-eye area. “It’s been an ongoing trial-and-error process over the years,” she admits, “so I went into this product test with little to no expectations. To my surprise, the Tarte color corrector actually worked decently well. On its own, I was able to see an improvement in the overall balance of my skin tone, and most of the darkness was impressively masked. But the real magic came in once I applied my concealer,” her go-to is Fenty Beauty Pro Filt'r Instant Retouch Concealer. “Layered underneath a quality concealer, this corrector is flawless, and almost made my dark circles disappear completely.” After a full day of wear, Rucker also reports she had no visible creasing or slippage.

Catrina’s Review: Shade Light-Medium Peach

As an insomniac, my dark circles tend to crop up the morning after a few particularly sleepless nights, so while not impossible to cover up, they take a bit of elbow grease to hide. Like many of my colleagues, I loved how easy this product was to apply. It has a smooth and creamy texture that blends like a dream and fans out evenly across the delicate under-eye area with minimal tugging required. My assigned shade was a great match for my skin tone, so I was able to wear it on its own for a more natural look or layered as a base beneath concealer to help minimize creasing—my go-to is Charlotte Tilbury Beautiful Skin Radiant Concealer. In addition to its color-correcting and brightening abilities, I adored the product’s hydration and staying power. (No matter how much moisturizer or eye cream I use, my under-eyes tend to shrivel up after a full day in makeup.) Thanks to the addition of squalene, this formula helped derail any dryness.

The Bottom Line: Is Tarte’s Colored Clay CC Undereye Corrector Worth the Hype?

What We Like

  • full dark circle coverage
  • simple application process
  • easy to blend
  • smooth feel on skin
  • easy to layer with additional makeup
  • minimal creasing
  • hydrating/didn’t dry out the skin
  • lasts all day
  • reasonable price tag

What We Don't Like

  • limited shade range
  • didn’t hide wrinkles

After receiving high marks across feel, layering ability, staying power, efficacy and the application process (we all agreed our fingers were best), the answer for many of us was yes. “I'd definitely reach for this for special occasions or nights out when I really want to make the finished look more polished,” Clarke says. “Highly recommend it!” I also thought it fully delivered on masking tired eyes and brightening up my overall complexion.

While all testers unanimously praised its ability to cover dark circles, the limited shade range left some of us wanting more. “Next time, I might have to try a lighter shade,” Candelario says, “but with only four options, it might hard to find one that works with my skin tone.”

It should be noted that unlike your typical foundation or concealer, true color correctors use color theory to help neutralize (or, at least, minimize) certain skin discolorations like redness, brown spots and, yes, dark circles. Alone, they’re not meant to match your skin tone, and in fact, they often incorporate shades you wouldn’t expect to find in the skincare aisle, like orange, red, green and purple. But as a product that combines both coverage and color correcting, the Tarte CC undereye corrector is a bit of a makeup unicorn. The key to unlocking its full potential? Identifying your proper shade and seeing how it blends with your go-to foundation or concealer.

So, who’s up for a Sephora run?
