ICYMI: We are officially in the era of dopamine dressing (that is, wearing clothing and makeup with the intention of boosting your mood.) We already added blue eyeshadows and orange lipsticks to the mix, and now it’s time to infuse some color into our locks. We asked five experts to share their predictions for the top nine summer hair colors of 2022. Hint: The sun isn’t the only thing that will be glowing at the next poolside BBQ.

The Top 6 Hair Color Trends to Try in 2022

1. Golden Bronze

“Golden Bronze” is the honey brown hue to try this season if you’re looking to bring some brightness and dimension to your strands. “Women are embracing healthy hair and warm honey blonde is a tone that suits most complexions without having to over lighten things (which can leave your hair looking brittle and damaged),” says Min Kim, celebrity colorist and L’Oréal Professionnel ambassador. From Maude Apatow to Selena Gomez, this hair color is also super low maintenance for natural brunettes and blondes alike.

Expert Recommendation: L’Oreal Professionnel Metal Detox Shampoo ($32)

2. Ash Gold

If you want the best of both worlds, consider this stunning shade that celebs like Jennifer Lopez, Hailee Steinfeld and Kylie Jenner are currently rocking. “It’s the perfect balance between warm and cool blonde. Though ultra-platinum and lighter shades of blonde are beautiful, they can be unrealistic and damaging if attempted on the wrong type of hair,” explains Justin Toves-Vincilione, a hairstylist and advocate for Authentic Beauty Concept. “Ash Gold gives a bright but balanced finish without causing damage or looking brassy. Plus, it’s a neutral tone that can look beautiful on most skin tones, especially when enhanced with the right makeup.”

3. Beachy Bronde

“Bronde really took off in early 2022 and the versatile shade is even more popular now as we head into summer,” says Sharon Dorram, a master colorist at Sharon Dorram Color at Sally Hershberger Salon. “The color is super sexy with lots of dimension, movement and texture,” she explains. Whether you’re lightening your dark hair or deepening your existing blonde, adding a mix of high or lowlights will get you to a sunkissed bronde. Dorram recommends using a treatment mask once a week to nourish strands and boost shine in-between salon visits.

4. Sandy Copper

Yup, cooper is still going strong for the summer, as seen on celebs like Phoebe Dynevor, Sydney Sweeney and Barbie Ferreria. “You want to ask for something that’s not overly orange,” explains Rachel Bodt, a celebrity colorist and Matrix brand ambassador. “Adding dimension with subtle blonde highlights is a great way to break this shade up,” she says. Bodt also recommends investing in a protein-based spray to keep the shade vibrant. Not only will it help reduce breakage, but it also nourishes your strands and ensures you get a more even tone. “Red hair tends to fade the fastest and requires a good porosity boost for the color to evenly adhere.” explains Bodt.

Expert Recommendation: Matrix Instacure Anti-Breakage Porosity Spray ($24)

5. Punk Hair

“Celebrities and 2022 runway looks are impacting this trend, but I think people also just want to have fun right now,” shares Alex Brownsell, celebrity colorist and co-founder of Bleach London. “Going into summer, people definitely become more carefree and this is reflected in their hair. And what’s more fun than electric colors?” Whether that’s a fiery red buzzcut or bold pink tips, this is the season to step out of your comfort zone with a vivid color (and relive your emo days).

6. Fantasy Colors

Dopamine dressing (that is, dressing with the intention of boosting your mood) is huge this summer and what better way to indulge in the trend than with a vibrant shade of orange, yellow or pink on your strands? "Fantasy colors give a fun, creative look that is often temporary and can completely fade out of the hair. Live a little!," encourages Bianca Hillier, celebrity hair colorist.

7. Strawberry Brunette

You heard of strawberry blonde, but brunettes are taking over the hue this season. “This hair color is trending because it doubles as a rich, medium brunette shade, while still allowing you to dabble in the excitement of being a redhead,” says Toves-Vincilione. Depending on your natural hair color, the shade can vary between being super vibrant or taking on more of a muted, neutral tone, so it’s customized to suit your strands.

8. Blonde Babylights

A splash of color is all we need sometimes and babylights deliver just that. “As the name implies, babylights employ a similar technique to highlights but give a more nuanced and youthful look,” says Dorram. “Celebs like Margot Robbie, Gwyneth Paltrow and Julianne Hough rock blonde babylights because the highlights are so fine that as the hair grows out, it looks softer and even more natural.” This subtle color works on all hair types but is especially good for people with fine hair because it gives the illusion of thicker locks thanks to the added dimension it creates. (Dorram is a proponent of using a purple shampoo and conditioner, which can help neutralize any brassy tones that creep in over time.)

9. ‘90s Blonde

With the recent resurgence of ‘90s beauty icons like Pamela Anderson, blonde is definitely back in a big way this summer. “This shade has that super youthful look and is balanced with just the right amount of sunny blonde,” says Bodt.

Kim also agrees that ‘90s blonde is poised to be a big hit this summer, “The Hollywood glam look is definitely making a comeback. Think: Brigitte Bardot and Marilyn Monroe, both of whom were sirens from an era when glam and Hollywood crossed over to create some of the most iconic looks ever.” To keep the vibrant shade bright, both experts recommend adding a sulfate-free shampoo and strengthening conditioner to your routine.

And the One Color We’re Leaving in 2021…

Money pieces. While we’re keeping a few Y2K beauty looks around, the chunky, face-framing highlights that dominated our Instagram feeds last year aren’t making the cut this summer. “These chunky highlights were definitely fun and nostalgic, but I believe that more people are looking for a more natural and easier to maintain look now,” says Dorram. “It’s a graphic and edgier look that works best for the daring, but most of us want something that flatters and looks easy on the eyes as it grows out,” adds Kim. Guess we're leaving the color-blocking to our makeup instead. (Our Euphoria girlies would be so proud.)
