6 Cut, Color and Styling Trends to Shake Up Your Hair This Spring

One side effect of this particularly late-arriving spring? We’ve been ignoring our hair for far too long (since we were hiding it under a beanie until about five minutes ago). But it’s finally time to shake things up: We rounded up some of New York City's most talented hairstylists and asked them to share their favorite looks for the season.

Crystals, Probiotics and Electric Currents What’s Trending in NYC Beauty

Copper Spice

Celeb Inspo: Madelaine Petsch

Copper and spice aren’t words we typically associate with spring, but Spoke & Weal color specialist Madison Rae Garrett says the lucky-penny hue is going to be everywhere. “If I could make everyone in the world a copper or redhead, I would,” she says. “I love that this hair color allows for such a wide variety of intensities. You can range from a natural copper or red to something incredibly intense and bright if you want to stand out.” The best thing about this trend is that you test it out before committing. She suggests starting with a few balayage pieces at the bottom to give your hair just a pop of copper if you’re not ready for the full commitment.

Choppy Fringe

Celeb Inspo: Sofia Vergara

We love bangs but hate the upkeep. That’s why we’re feeling celebrity hairstylist Arsen Gurgov’s low-maintenance rendition. The eyebrow-skimming style requires fewer trims and less primping because it’s supposed to look undone. “It works well on naturally wavy hair,” says Gurgov, because unlike blunt bangs, for this look you don’t need to tackle them with a flatiron.

Deep Side Parts

Celeb Inspo: Emma Watson

Middle parts have been de rigueur the past couple years, but if this year’s Oscars were any indication, the dramatic swoop is back in a big way. And A-list hairstylist Serge Normant proves it works on just about anyone. It modernizes a bob, creates dimension in long wavy hair, and provides the illusion of volume for those with stick-straight hair. Best of all, it requires zero long-term commitment: Just take your part further than you typically would and flip the hair with your hand. Let your locks fall naturally over the side of your face (and for added drama, show off a statement barrette on the exposed side).

Color-blocked Braids

Unicorn hair may be on the way out, but bold, multicolored locks are just getting started. Streeters artist Tina Outen loves Alicia Keys’s two-tone braids (she recently rocked pink and blue, and pink and orange). Best of all, it’s low-commitment: “Braiding colors into your hair gives you freedom to change from month to month and it’s an excellent way for girls with natural hair to try the fun color trend, since [the colored extensions] don’t damage the hair” the way harsh bleaches and dyes would.

Shoulder-length Layers

Celeb Inspo: Meghan Markle, Amal Clooney

You’re finally bidding adieu to the Great Lob Chop of 2015…but you’re not quite sure how to embrace that awkward in-between phase as it grows out. Hair guru Ric Pipino suggests cutting in subtle, textured layers. Unlike the choppy, face-framing layers of the early aughts, the shortest of these start at the shoulders and blend downward with the rest of your mane. “This cut is ideal for women with fine hair who are looking for more volume,” he says.

Bonus: Accessories Galore

Not gonna lie: Our inner nine-year-old is pretty stoked that bows, barrettes and all manner of sparkly hair adornments are trending. Whether you opt for a throwback scrunchie (yes, they’re cool again) or some edgy ponytail hardware, it’s an extremely chic solution for those days when you don’t feel like shampooing.
