I was hurriedly crossing Tenth Avenue one morning when I first saw her. Expensive brunette hair flowing under a Moncler beanie with Celine sunnies, a The Row trench, Veja sneakers and an oversized Acne Studios scarf. She maneuvered over the New York City sidewalks like a seasoned pro, dodging tourists while pushing her Bugaboo Fox 5 with the ease and agility of an F1 driver.

As a new parent myself, I clocked her immediately; she was a masterclass in how to look chic in the dead of winter. A cool mom, no doubt. Her babe was bundled from head to toe in what appeared to be a pint-sized sleeping bag, tiny nose barely visible amongst the faux fur appliqué. On the outside read a label, “7AM Enfant.”

I took out my phone and began to Google.

Turns out, it was the cult-favorite Blanket 212 Evolution—"the Canada Goose of stroller blankets,” my mom group quickly informed me—and as the weeks went by, I spotted it strapped to the strollers of well-dressed women all over town, from Cobble Hill to Manhattan West. As a city expat living in the suburbs, my interest was piqued.

Unsurprisingly—based on my observed sample size—the Blanket 212 comes with a pretty hefty price tag ($218 - $264), but after seeing it all over the stylish streets of NYC, I had to know if it was worth the splurge. With my eight-month-old in tow, I gave it a whirl during one of the Northeast’s coldest winters on record. Here’s everything you need to know if you’re looking to buy one yourself.

What Is the 7AM Enfant Blanket 212 Evolution?

The Blanket 212 Evolution is the best-selling footmuff from 7AM Enfant, a French-inspired high-end baby brand, that’s designed to keep babies and toddlers warm when riding in a stroller or car seat. Perfect for cold-weather climates and walkable cities, this cozy cocoon features a water-repellent shell, poly insulation and a soft, plush lining, along with adjustable features that allow it to grow with your child from infancy to preschool.

What is a “footmuff,” you ask? A footmuff (or bunting bag) is an insulated, weather-resistant, hooded sleeping bag that can attach to your car seat or stroller via an integrated harness opening. Unlike a normal blanket that can be jostled by uneven terrain or blown off in the wind, a footmuff will not budge, no matter how much your little one loves to kick.

Beloved by many, the Blanket 212 is best known for its longevity—meaning your kid won’t outgrow it in a matter of weeks. Thanks to two extension pieces, this one-size wearable can be used from six months to four years and features an anti-slip, removable back panel for ideal stroller and car seat safety. Reviewers also love that it’s durable, machine washable and can stand up to extremely cold temps.

My Review of the 7AM Enfant Blanket 212 Evolution

Normally, I’d wait for a particularly cold day to test a product like this (you know, to really put it through its paces). But in this case, I didn’t have to hold off. Most of January was spent well below freezing, with a handful of snowstorms thrown in, so I had plenty of opportunities to bundle up and head outside.

The Set Up

The Blanket 212 arrived in its very own miniature-sized garment bag, something I’ll definitely be holding on to for easy storage come spring. Adjusting the blanket’s size was step one of the set-up process. After a bit of trial and error, I eventually figured out how to unzip one of the two extension pieces and stored it away for future use, knowing my adorably chunky eight-month-old would fit nicely in the toddler size (which 7AM Enfant says should fit most nine- to 18-month-olds).

Step two involved attaching the resized garment to my stroller (a Silver Cross Wave 3), which truly couldn’t have been easier. While my infant babbled in his highchair, I nestled the footmuff into the seat and threaded each section of the five-point harness through the prefabbed holes. The grippy back panel helped keep everything in place, and after bundling my son in his hat and jacket, we were off to the races.

The (Chilly) Experience

We took many walks over the course of a few weeks to test out the Blanket 212’s effectiveness, all during varying degrees of freezing (like I said, this winter was rough). During each jaunt, my baby showed no signs of being cold (or too hot), and I loved how the footmuff fully cocooned him, blocking out any harsh wind thanks to the neck collar and adjustable hood. Style wise, I chose the classic all-black version that featured a super soft plush interior, and my son seemed to love the cozy feel as well as the discovery of a new tactile experience.

Upon return, I was nervous my little one would be a sweaty mess (how many layers is too many layers?), but when I unzipped the blanket and lifted him out, he seemed perfectly content, no moisture in sight. The Blanket 212 quickly became a permanent fixture on our stroller, not only protecting my baby from the cold, but also helping to cut down on the prep time required for any outdoor adventure—a major win for mom.

The Bottom Line: Is the 7AM Enfant Blanket 212 Evolution Worth It?

What I Like

  • Grows with your child from 6M to 4T
  • Universal fit on all strollers and car seats
  • Made for extreme cold
  • Machine washable
  • Lots of design options

What I Don't Like

  • High price point
  • Could be too warm for transitional weather

7AM Enfant

Before discovering the Blanket 212, I would often grab a standard baby blanket to cover my son before venturing outside, internally stressing about whether it was thick enough to actually keep him warm. Whether from wind, an uneven sidewalk or my kid’s propensity to kick, said blanket would almost always end up on the ground, covered in mud, or worse, accidentally abandoned on the side of the road. It’s clear the footmuff is a seasoned mom’s secret to surviving winter, and thanks to the high-quality design and grow-with-me features, I find this version to be a worthy investment.

Now, if only it came in adult sizes…
