This month marks the one-year anniversary since Prince Harry, 39, released his bombshell memoir, Spare, to the world. So in honor of the tell-all book that brought us shocking revelations and never-before-heard stories about the British royal family, we’re taking a look back at Spare to bring you the fascinating insights you might have missed upon your first read. This time around, we’re revisiting the moment when the duke asked his late grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II, for permission to marry his future wife, Meghan Markle, 42, and her honest response.

In an excerpt taken from the memoir (and reposted by Buzzfeed), Harry shared that he was so nervous to ask the late queen for consent to marry Markle before popping the big question. Due to the establishment of the Succession to the Crown Act 2013, the Duke of Sussex could not marry the Suits alum without the monarch’s blessing. So, the spare waited until the family went on a shooting trip at Sandringham because shooting days always “put Granny in a good mood.”

When Harry was finally alone with the queen, he sat her down and nervously shared how he wanted to propose to Markle. “I stared at her face but it was unreadable,” he wrote in the book. Finally, the queen revealed her answer and you’ll never guess what she said. “At last she replied, Well, then, I suppose I have to say yes,” Harry said. At first, the Duke of Sussex didn’t know what to think from that response, writing, “Was she being sarcastic? Ironic? Deliberately cryptic? Was she indulging in a bit of wordplay?”

But in the end, Harry pushed the thought aside and was so excited that the queen said yes. Then, Harry proposed to Markle in November 2017 and they were engaged. On May 19, 2018, the couple tied the knot. Fast forward to the present, Harry and Markle share two children: Archie (4) and Lilibet (2).
