The One Pattern That Reigned Supreme on the 2025 Met Gala Red Carpet

It's a classic for a reason

The Met Gala returned on May 5, and as always, the looks did not disappoint. This year’s theme—"Superfine: Tailoring Black Style"—celebrated Black excellence in fashion, and the stars showed up ready to honor that legacy with bold statements, sharp tailoring and dramatic flair. But if there was one trend that quietly stole the spotlight on the (blue) carpet, it was stripes. From sleek pinstripes to bold graphic lines, this classic pattern got a high-fashion makeover across a range of standout looks.

The Substance star Demi Moore made a bold statement in a black-and-white striped Thom Browne gown designed to resemble a necktie, complete with a knot detail at the sternum and a sculptural wrap that hovered dramatically behind her head.

Alicia Keys also leaned into the stripe trend, coordinating with husband Swizz Beatz in matching red and black striped pantsuits—because power couples dress in sync.

Patrick Schwarzenegger (yes, from The White Lotus) showed up in an oversized pinstripe suit with a plunging neckline, revealing a bright yellow shirt underneath. He finished the look with a red belt and a coordinating handbag for a quirky, fashion-forward twist (alongside co-star Aimee Lou Wood, btw!).

Jeremy Allen White made his Met Gala debut, leaving behind his The Bear chef whites for a sharp, tailored navy three-piece suit with subtle stripes—a clean, classic moment.

Quinta Brunson brought elegance to the carpet in a white strapless gown with delicate black pinstripes. The look came together with a matching jacket and a red rose detail that gave it just the right amount of flair.

And of course, Doja Cat stunned—rocking a tuxedo-style bodysuit with an animal-print design, topped with a fur hat and sky-high platform boots.

Other stars who embraced the striped trend? Anne Hathaway, Emma Chamberlain, Walton Goggins and Teyana Taylor, who also donned a bold red cape that honored the late Vogue legend, André Leon Talley.

Call it the unofficial dress code of the night.
