Scarlett Johansson & Adam Driver Are a Couple in the Midst of a Terrible Divorce in ‘Marriage Story’

There’s no shortage of movies that illustrate the beginning of a relationship—the meet cute, the inevitable misunderstanding and the eventual happily ever after. But what about what happens after the credits roll and the “in good times and bad” part of the vows are truly tested?

In Scarlett Johansson (Avengers: Endgame) and Adam Driver’s (Girls) new movie, Marriage Story, we find out what happens when the love story comes to an end.

Written and directed by Oscar-nominated filmmaker Noah Baumbach (Frances Ha), Marriage Story is the realistic portrait of a marriage breaking down and how a family grapples to stay together in the midst of change.

In the beginning, Johansson’s and Driver’s characters, Nicole and Charlie, respectively, seem happy with their roles as both husband and wife and parents. In a voiceover, they explain what incredible parents each other are, how brilliant they think their spouse is and how they know when to push each other. Then, seemingly out of the blue, Nicole serves Charlie divorce papers in her kitchen with her family present and everything goes to hell.

As is expected, we see them go through ups and downs as they struggle to find their place as single parents in the world. Then, of course, there’s their son. How will they cope? From the looks of it, lots of therapy and soul searching.

Laura Dern (Big Little Lies), Alan Alda (The Big C) and Ray Liotta (Shades of Blue) also appear in this haunting musing on marriage and divorce.

Marriage Story hits Netflix on Friday, December 6.
