If you’ve had a child within the last seven years, you’re likely all too familiar with the ‘play couch.’ No, not the on-its-last-legs number you’ve relegated to your basement; this creation, an assemblage of oversized foam blocks, was designed to keep kids off your furniture. The pieces could be rearranged, making it an easy sell for fostering imaginative play—it’s a fort! A rocket ship! A low-risk American Ninja Warrior course!

But, as every iteration emerged, one thing remained: It was also, kind of…an eyesore. Well, the play couch has officially gotten a glow-up, courtesy of House of Noa’s new soft furniture line.

The seats themselves are sleek and modern, with curved backs and arms that add a layer of coziness—and separate the brand, design-wise, from its almost LEGO brick-like competition. And, more than that, they’re available in more than 30 fabrics and colorways, from cuddly (yet sophisticated) bouclé to stripes and toile patterns that feel befitting a Nancy Meyers movie.

At $249 per seat—and two seats comprising a full play couch—they’re pricier than the Nugget ($274 for the whole sofa) and even the Pottery Barn Kids Play Your Way Anywhere Couch ($399). But the elevated design makes them feel right at home in any room of the house. Each piece is designed to be mixed and matched, with machine-washable covers on everything, because let’s be real: If humans are sitting on it, spills and stains will happen.

The modular pieces are designed to be mixed and matched, and it’s all Greenguard Gold certified for eco-friendliness, down to the CertiPUR-US foam used in its cushions (which is independently tested to ensure it doesn’t contain formaldehyde, phthalates, mercury, lead or heavy metals, and is low-VOC, among other requirements).

At 11 inches from the ground, the seats are much lower than your typical sofa (about 17 to 19 inches). That low-slung style is by design; it’s easier for toddlers to climb on, and results in cushions that aren’t too bulky for little arms to rearrange. Each seat is 35 inches wide though, making it decently roomy to curl up on, whether you’re a preschooler or grownup.

House of Noa hasn’t limited the launch to individual chairs and sofas, however; you can outfit an entire playroom in their babyproofed pieces, which include ottomans and coffee tables. Here are the key pieces from the line—with a pick from each of the brand’s four core aesthetics (Coastal Blues, Cozy Romance, Organic Neutrals and Contempo Modern).

1. The Seat

If you’ve got a small space or aren’t sure how much you’ll actually use play furniture, this is the way to go. The seat unfolds to create a flat lounger, making it a nice sleepover or nap time hangout, and you can also convert it into a fort. Shown in fuzzy bouclé, you can also get it in any of the brand’s other colors and fabrics, from linen cabana stripes to neutral checkerboard.

2. Play Couch

Technically, the play couch is simply two seats, pushed together, with or without the optional arm rests (sold separately). It’ll give you the most options to play, and at 70 inches wide, could pass for a low-slung loveseat.

3. The Ottoman

Available in small (17 inches wide) and large sizes (26 inches), the ottoman comes with a waterproof liner for added durability and offers another cushy spot to prop your feet—or serve as a barista counter, toadstool or other prop during playtime.

4.  The Throw Pillows

Sphere and lumbar pillows add a modern touch—and help elevate the play couch from series-of-foam-blocks to artful addition to the room.

5. The Coffee Table

Add a tray on top, and you have a place to rest your drink while you’re hanging out. Then, when it’s playtime, remove it and you’ve got a zero-hard-edges area for the kids to run wild. (And in 11 color and pattern options, I might add.)

6. The Armrests

Sold in a set of two, these armrests are easy to remove and use as pillars for fort-building—or, as my kids would be tempted to do, gladiator jousting poles. (Thankfully, they’re made of foam.)
