Burrito, anyone?

Whether it’s Toasted Cheddar Street Chalupas, a Dirty Baja Blast or the entire Cravings Value Menu, I’m always down to taste whatever newness Taco Bell’s culinary mad scientists have dreamed up (especially when it’s wrapped in caramelized cheese). Next on my to-devour list? The breakfast menu.

I only got to taste the chain’s morning offerings when they first launched back in 2014. I know I tried the waffle tacos (RIP) and the A.M. Crunchwrap, and at the time, their scrumptiousness paled in comparison to the standard lunch and dinner items. But it’s been 11 years; surely the fast food chain has improved its brekkie, no? I took the liberty of finding out myself by ordering one of each item with a variety of proteins, along with coffee and sides. Below, you’ll find my honest reviews, overall ranking and original photos. Read on for the greasy details.

The Best Fast Food Breakfast Sandwiches from 10 Popular Chains, Ranked & Reviewed

7. Breakfast Quesadilla with Bacon

  • What It Is: grilled flour tortilla filled with scrambled eggs, bacon and a blend of mozzarella, pepper jack and cheddar cheeses
  • Other Protein Options: steak, sausage
  • Price: $5

The best part of this was the eggs. They were moist and fluffy, even after the car ride home. The bacon was a bit chewy; I like mine crispy and well-done, so I may be biased there. Considering it’s a quesadilla, more cheese would have been nice, or even a drizzle of nacho sauce (or the creamy jalapeño sauce that usually comes on them).

6. Breakfast California Crunchwrap

  • What It Is: warm flour tortilla filled with a hash brown, scrambled eggs, bacon, diced tomatoes, guacamole and shredded cheddar cheese, wrapped and grilled
  • Other Protein Options: bacon, sausage
  • Price: $5

I was excited to try this bundle of deliciousness. Any sandwich with a hash brown inside is one I want to get my hands on. While this, of course, makes the spuds lose their crunch in time, it turned soggy even faster because of the tomatoes and the guacamole, which is much more like an avocado spread than real-deal guac, IMO. That said, it’s easy to eat on the go and has a balance of diverse flavors and textures. I think I’d have preferred it without the bacon; its texture and smokiness sort of dominated every bite.

5. Cinnabon Delights

  • What It Is: two warm doughnut holes, filled with Cinnamon cream cheese frosting and dusted in cinnamon sugar
  • Price (two): $2.50

The doughnuts themselves feel bready and a bit old. But the cinnamon sugar played beautifully with the tangy, rich filling. I don’t know that I’d want these for breakfast as much as I’d want them for dessert, but I can definitely see accidentally polishing off a large order of these in 30 seconds flat.

4. Regular Iced Coffee

The coffee itself has bitter, roasty notes to it, but tastes a bit diluted. However, compared to other fast food iced coffees, I didn’t hate this one. Some chains make theirs light and sweet by default; I’ve gotten iced joe from McDonald’s that was essentially melted ice cream. In this case, they asked how many pumps of vanilla creamer I wanted (two) and mixed it in for me. It’s not the best cuppa you’ll ever have, but for $2, it’s better than that of its competitors.

3. Hash Brown

  • What It Is: freshly fried potato hash brown patty
  • Price: $2

The hash brown was very crispy on the outside and moist and tender on the inside. It seemed wider and flatter than the McDonald’s hash brown (which, if you ask me, is the gold standard of fast food hash browns), which I thought would’ve made it craggier and crispier. But it was definitely more of a 50/50 split between both textures, so if you like yours extra crunchy, McD’s is likely your preferred. I wouldn’t have minded a touch more salt either.

2. Cheesy Toasted Breakfast Burrito with Sausage

  • What It Is: grilled flour tortilla filled with scrambled eggs, sausage and warm nacho cheese sauce
  • Other Protein Options: bacon, potato
  • Price: $2

I’m not the biggest fan of Taco Bell’s nacho cheese, but I enjoyed this savory handheld much more than I thought I would. The sausage is herbaceous, slightly spicy and well-seasoned. The egg was fluffy and moist. Yes, real cheese would have been nice, but the sauce helped the inside stay molten and creamy, as it didn’t harden over time the same way shredded cheese would have.

1. Grande Toasted Breakfast Burrito with Steak

  • What It Is: grilled flour tortilla filled with scrambled eggs, seasoned potatoes, grilled marinated steak, diced tomatoes and a blend of mozzarella, pepper jack and cheddar cheeses
  • Other Protein Options: bacon, sausage
  • Price: $5

Not gonna lie…this burrito slapped. If you want a substantial breakfast, this is the way to go—at Taco Bell, anyway. The eggs were fluffy and tender. The steak’s warm-spiced marinade really shone against the mild eggs and starchy potatoes. (I wonder why the seasoned potatoes aren’t available as a side; I bet they’re just naked Fiesta Potatoes.) I also liked the tomatoes for color and freshness. All that was missing was a side of sour cream. A smear of the refried beans would’ve been delicious, too.
