Jennifer Garner is no stranger to the kitchen. She’s cooked everything from homemade pizza to peach chiffon pie on Pretend Cooking Show, a casual Instagram series where she prepares food in her own kitchen. The latest episode shows her baking a family recipe for farm biscuits, which look so tasty that I just might ditch the canned kind for good (well, at least until Thanksgiving).

“My favorite Aunt Janet makes my favorite biscuits on my favorite farm,” Garner captioned the video. “So, I asked for her secrets to share with you. Here you go, from our Oklahoma family farm to your breakfast table. Thanks, Janet and Robert.”

The recipe is no-frills and simple, so much so that you likely have all the necessary ingredients in your kitchen right now—except for the buttermilk, perhaps. Even Garner is occasionally without the arguably essential ingredient. (Her darling mom has called her out for it before.)

The dough is mixed by hand, then rolled, shaped into biscuits and placed in a buttered or oiled baking dish. Finally, they can be baked in the oven until golden brown, but Garner mentions that her uncle often smokes them on the grill instead, as shown in the video. (I’ll be putting a pin in that for summer, TYVM).

Read on for the full recipe, which yields 12 mouthwateringly tender biscuits.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • ¾ teaspoon kosher salt
  • ¼ cup canola oil
  • 1 cup buttermilk

Directions

Step 1: Preheat the oven to 400°F.

Step 2: Combine the dry ingredients and make a well in the center of the mix. Pour oil and buttermilk into the well and gently mix them together. (Garner likes her biscuit dough wet, so if the dough is too stiff and dry, add buttermilk a little at a time until you're happy with the consistency.)

Step 3: Pour the batter onto a floured surface and cover it lightly with additional flour. Gently work the dough until it's fully combined. Roll and cut out/pinch and pull the dough to shape the biscuits and place them into a lightly buttered or oiled baking dish.

Step 4: Bake them until golden brown.
