When Queen Camilla stepped out last week alongside Geri Halliwell-Horner (ahem, Ginger Spice) for a royal engagement at Maggie’s, a charity dedicated to cancer care, we couldn’t help but do a double take. How come? The queen—who also happens to be president for the org—was wearing a blue tartan coat. NBD, right? Except for the fact that Kate Middleton also wore a blue tartan coat (similar here, $499; $299) for royal engagements in Scotland that same week.

Don’t get us wrong: There were clear distinctions between the styles chosen by Queen Camilla and Princess Catherine. For example, Catherine’s was a full-length design that she co-designed with bespoke tailor Chris Kerr, which she wore to visit the National Curling Academy alongside Prince William. Her Majesty’s coat—created by British designer Roy Allen—was cropped and featured a velvet collar. Still, it was the hue of blue and tartan pattern that made the overlap feel extra striking.

No, the royal duo isn’t known to compare style notes, but it felt like a bit of a royal uniform seeing them step out wearing it for back-to-back engagements, even if they were for unrelated events. Tartan also feels like a royal style fail-safe—everyone from Queen Elizabeth II to Princess Diana has reached for the heritage pattern over the years.

Of course, we do love that both Catherine and Camilla each managed to make their version of tartan blue outerwear their own. Catherine’s ankle-length design is a statement-maker while Camilla’s cropped silhouette—which she paired with a pleated midi skirt in a similar blue hue—is figure-flattering and chic.

The royal trend of the season? Let’s just say if Duchess Sophie steps out wearing it, we can officially call it.
