Splashing in the pool, sunning on the beach—all the reasons we have for wearing a swimsuit are fun. But shopping for one? Decidedly less so. Figuring out the best fit for your body type—whether you have a long torso or short, big boobs or small—is a feat in itself. And if you happen to clock in well below model height, well, that presents a whole new challenge, particularly when it comes to one-pieces.

The pros? One-piece bathing suits offer extra coverage and upper body support. The cons, especially for short girls, include a lack of adjustability and size customization—not to mention the risk of that extra fabric compacting your figure or hanging loose where you definitely don’t want it to. But if you’re hoping to find a petite-friendly one-piece that will actually flatter your frame (and help you avoid that dreaded diaper butt), you’ve come to the right place.

As a 5’1” fashion and shopping editor, I know my way around plenty of petite styling tricks. And not only have I pulled tried-and-true picks from my fellow PureWow petites, I’ve also tapped professional stylist Samantha Dawn for her expert recommendations when it comes to picking out one-pieces that work for short women.

How I Chose the Best One-Piece Bathing Suits for Petites

As a short gal myself, I took into account things I like in a swimsuit, including elongating V-necks and designs that work to make short torsos look longer. I also considered the pro styling advice of Dawn, who shared multiple features that benefit different types of petite frames (which you can read more about at the end of this story). From there, I searched editor- and reader-loved swim brands that offer quality, comfort, style and a wide size range from bust to hip.

Best One-Piece for Petites Overall

1. Boden Mykonos Swimsuit

Boden

Both Editor-in-Chief Jillian Quint and Director of Special Projects Rachel Bowie—two of my fellow short-girl staffers here at PureWow—swear by Boden swimsuits. Quint’s favorite is the Mykonos, which comes complete with a petite-friendly V neck, a feature that can help make top halves look longer. As she wrote in her review of the style, “It looks incredible on, thanks to the aforementioned V, ruche-like banding at the belly and a full tush that keeps everything in place. As a 5’1” short-waisted person, I generally assume I can only wear bathing suits with adjustable straps (lest I leave nothing to the imagination), but not so with the Mykonos, which comes in both regular and long torso sizing and has molded cups for a little extra structure. I found it ran true to size, and was happy I erred on the smaller side. (I’m wearing a size 2, after debating the 4).”

2. Cupshe Point Taken Swimsuit

Cupshe

As for me? I’m a fan of Cupshe, which I find to offer consistent quality (and petite-friendly fits) at a surprisingly low price point. When perusing the site for this summer’s buy, I immediately zoned in on this style. The waist-whittling color blocking and ruching is a huge bonus, but it isn’t the only thing that creates a flattering optical illusion on short frames. Thanks to the high-rise bottom and cheeky cut, it also helps to make legs look longer and minimizes the risk of a low-hanging booty.

3. J.Crew Lana Eyelet Swimsuit

J.Crew

Numerous petite editors (myself included) also turn to J.Crew for its swimwear options. This sleek new offering not only provides smoothing compression throughout, but also a pretty (and very trendy RN) eyelet design at the neckline. One tip I’ve picked up in my years of short-girl dressing? Any embellishment that draws the eye upward to the neck or bust is going to make you seem longer. (Ahem, eyes up here, please!) Just note that, due to the compressive nature of the fabric, it’s likely to run small, so reviewers say to size up.

4. Popilush Shapewear Plunging Swimsuit

Popilush

Dawn recommends this style for its plunging V detail at the bustline, but thanks to its built-in shapewear, it’s also the perfect pick for those seeking swimwear that sculpts and shapes. Targeted waist control promises an instant hourglass effect, while adjustable straps and underwires provide figure-enhancing support. “[This pick] is a total confidence booster—I LOVE the tummy control and super flattering neckline,” raves one buyer.

5. Summersalt The Sidestroke Swimsuit

Summersalt

Pro tip: Diagonal lines work similarly to vertical ones when it comes to slimming and elongating short figures. Which is why The Sidestroke, one of Summersalt’s all-around best sellers, is a fab pick for petites. The diagonal seams and color blocking are especially flattering, while the one-shoulder design brings the eye upwards and emphasizes your shoulders. Even better, though, is the suit’s Goldilocks level of compression, which supports your bust and tummy without restricting your ability to breathe. As one fan of the style wrote, ”I have a hard time finding one-piece swimsuits that fit my petite frame well, but this one is perfect! I’m 5’1”...and the size 2 fits great. It stayed in place well and provides good coverage. Love this suit!”

Best Wrap-Style One-Piece for Petites

6. Lands’ End SlenderSuit Wrap Swimsuit

Lands' End

The wrap effect of this V-neck swimsuit is flattering for both big busts and small ones alike, offering lifting support for the former and a fuller look for the latter. It also helps to accentuate curves, whether or not you actually have any. Lands’ End notes that the Slendertex fabric is the brand’s most compressive, so it smooths and shapes everywhere you’d want it to. But the best part? It comes in petite-specific sizing, which is hard to find in the swimwear arena.

Best Halter One-Piece for Petites

7. Suuksess Halter Retro Swimsuit

Suuksess

Vertical stripes are a short girl’s best friend, and the thinner the pattern, the better (thick stripes tend to overwhelm small frames). That’s exactly what drew me to this retro one-piece on Amazon, though it also offers other shape-enhancing features like a ruched bodice and shoulder-spotlighting halter straps. One 5’3” reviewer raves about it, writing, "I'm not hourglass shaped, but I look like it in this suit! My larger chest can be difficult to find a suit for...[This one] solved all my insecurities. I've swam more this summer than I have in years!"

8. Andie Swim The Pana Swimsuit

Andie Swim

In addition to one-shoulder and halter-strap designs, Dawn recommends going fully strapless if you want to draw attention to your shoulders and upper body. Enter this little number from Andie Swim. There’s a silicone grip at the top to keep the suit up, as well as underbust support to keep the girls up. The ruching at the chest also helps smaller busts look more filled out. For shorties especially, the benefits come from the eye-catching design up top and cheekier fit of the bottoms.

9. Left on Friday Sunday Suit

Left on Friday

For short gals with a lot going on in the chest, look no further than the Sunday suit. It’s designed to offer plenty of lifting support for D to G cups, and thanks to the super sleek silhouette, low neckline and mid-cut leg, also works wonders to lengthen your frame. Per the brand, its material is soft but smoothing, compressive but made to move in. So go ahead and get some air on that diving board—you don’t have to worry about anything falling out of place.

Best Cutout One-Piece for Petites

10. Bleu by Rod Beattie Cutout Swimsuit

Bleu by Rod Beattie

Shorties who want to show off some more skin in their one-piece are best to avoid cutouts that fall at the waist or hip, as they could end up hitting at an awkward spot on your frames. Not only that, but breaking things up at your middle can cause you to look shorter and wider. Instead, think vertically. The cutouts on this suit start from the top and taper straight down along the torso, delivering that all-important elongating effect we’re always after. The gold tone accents are a nice bonus, as is the ultra-low scoop back that boosts your height from behind.

Best Belted One-Piece for Petites

11. Beach Riot Sydney Belted Swimsuit

Beach Riot

On the flip side, a belt accent at the waist can help better define a petite’s proportions, especially one that can be adjusted to sit higher or lower on your torso as needed. This pick from Beach Riot offers just that, coming complete with a detached monochrome belt, plus straps that tie at the shoulders for a customizable fit. The look is cute and classy—just add oversized sunglasses.

What to Look for in a Petite One-Piece Swimsuit

Dawn calls out the important point that “even though all petite women are under a certain height, that doesn't mean all petite body shapes are the same. You have to consider body shape, proportions and how [you] want to shape [your] body.”

That said, she notes, “choosing a bathing suit for a petite body shape depends on a couple of things:

  • What are your proportions? Meaning, do you carry more volume in your upper half or lower half?
  • How do you want to shape your body visually?
  • What body parts do you want to avoid being emphasized?

“For example, if someone who carries more volume in her shoulders and wants to elongate their legs while minimizing their midsection, I would suggest going for a cheekier bottom that is high waisted, because that will elongate the legs and shorten the torso. However, if you have a shorter torso and want to elongate it, I suggest choosing a lower rise.”

She adds, “If you have broader shoulders, opt for thicker straps to soften the shoulders. If you want to emphasize your shoulders, choose a swimsuit with thinner straps, a halter neck or one that is strapless. If you want to focus on elongating your upper half to have a better posture…that will help you appear taller, go for a V neckline in your bathing suits.”

To play up your vertical lines, I’ll add that you should seek out styles with vertical stripes and cutouts (like the ones linked above), or diagonal designs. Belted or cinched-waist swimsuits are also flattering for petites, as they help accentuate curves and keep your torso looking proportional, rather than blocky and compact.
