What to Look for in a Comfortable Sandal
“Your shoe should be appropriate for your foot type as well as your activity,” says Dr. Jacqueline Sutera, an NYC-based podiatrist and foot surgeon. “This will not only provide comfort but can prevent injury.” So those looking for a shoe they can slip on for weekend errands may need to consider different options than those looking for a sandal they can wear walking around a city on vacation. But in all cases, Dr. Sutera stresses the importance of arch support. “It's normal to pronate (aka, the way your foot rolls as you walk) throughout the gait cycle, but it's overpronation that causes a lot of problems when you have a flat foot, like heel spurs, plantar fasciitis, tendonitis—and even stress fractures can happen. An arch support keeps you from overpronating,” she explains. Choosing the right materials for your needs is also important. Leather straps can offer sturdy support, but are often heavier than lightweight rubber or knit materials. And if you’re on the hunt for a shoe to wear while exploring the great outdoors, waterproofing is key. With all that in mind, here are some of our top picks.
The Top 5 Most Comfortable Sandals at a Glance

- Most Customizable Fit: Teva Hurricane XLT 2
- TikTok Famous: Alohas Marshmallow Sandals
- Size Range: US 4/4.5 to 12/12.5

- Promising Review: “When I first got these they were not very comfortable and I wasn’t sure if I was going to keep them. But After talking to some friends who swear by them, I wore them for a few days around the house to break them in and now they are perfect. They are SO comfortable I reach for them all the time. Would definitely recommend this shoe.” – Alyssa B., a Nordstrom reviewer
Florence H. has worn Birkenstock Arizona sandals for more than two decades now (not the same pair, but always the same style), including both before and after bunion surgery. “Before having my bunions removed, I really appreciated the fact that the straps are adjustable and so could accommodate the shape of my feet. Plus, they really mold to your exact foot once they’ve worn in, making them even more comfortable. They’re also so easy to slip on and off so I don’t have to bend down to twist or tweak them at all—I can just slip ‘em on and go!” Pretty much all rave reviews of Birkenstock shoes come back to its incredibly footbed design with tons of thoughtful, supportive details like a deep heel cup for stability, arch supports along the sides and indentations at the toes to keep your foot properly aligned as you walk.
- Size Range: US 5 to 12
- What to Consider: available in whole sizes only, easy to clean
- Promising Review: “These are the most comfortable slides [I’ve] ever owned. Wore them traveling through the airport, running errands and cleaning up and my feet never hurt. Will purchase more in different colors.” – a Nike reviewer based in Detroit, MI
These classic Nike slides have been a fan favorite for years, and have recently regained popularity on TikTok. But beyond their accessible price point and ease of use, they’re also surprisingly supportive thanks to a lightweight foam and contoured grip pattern on the sole of the shoe. Reviewers also say these slides are way more durable than they would have expected, even after frequent use. “The synthetic leather top is so smooth and durable. I wore mine outside many days in a row without getting any scratches or scuffs on them. The bottom didn’t peel either,” writes one reviewer. Some reviewers say they found these slides run a bit big, so for those who typically wear a half size you may want to go down to the nearest whole size. Otherwise, we say they run fairly true to size for those who typically wear a whole size.
- Size Range: US 5 to 13
- What to Consider: lots of color options, minimal arch support
- Promising Review: “They are super simple and can be dressed up or down. I walk around a lot around campus and work with children in the classroom daily and these shoes are extremely comfortable. They have become my go-to sandal. I plan to buy these in another color or two!” – Nic L., a Nordstrom reviewer
For the gal who prefers a barely-there look, these Sam Edelman sandals are just the ticket. PureWow assistant commerce editor Natalie LaBarbera says, “I’m due for a sandal update, but have loved these Gigi sandals for a few summers now. They have a slightly padded footbed that’s super comfortable and the ankle strap keeps them from slipping off.” If you’re in need of lots of foot support, these may not be the best choice, but that padded footbed is surprisingly supportive and comfortable even after long days, according to other reviewers. And as LaBarbera noted, the adjustable ankle strap makes it impossible for your sandals to come flying off so you can focus on getting where you need to go or busting a dance move at your cousin’s wedding. This style is also part of the brand’s Icons collection, meaning it’s been a best seller time and time again, further evidenced by the fact that numerous reviewers mention they’ve owned multiple (even up to ten) pairs at a time.
- Size Range: US 5 to 14
- What to Consider: available in whole sizes only, all three straps are fully adjustable, waterproof, lots of color options
- Promising Review: “I originally bought my first pair for hikes and our outdoor adventures, but they were so comfortable, they have become an everyday sandal for me! They are the perfect blend of sturdy for terrain and comfort for walking. The soles get softer and softer with wear.” – a Teva reviewer based in San Antonio, TX
PureWow’s senior food editor, Katherine Gillen, highly recommends these supportive, strappy sandals by Teva. “The footbed is really cushy and has good arch support, and the straps don’t rub or cause blisters. Plus, all three straps are adjustable for a custom fit.” And while they were originally designed for outdoor exploration—they’re waterproof and have a rubber lug sole for excellent traction—once on they don’t obviously look like water shoes and can easily be styled with jeans or even a sundress for a stroll in the city. This Teva style is also 100 percent vegan as an added animal-friendly bonus. The footbed is made from a lightweight EVA foam that strikes an ideal balance between being soft and supportive.
- Size Range: EU 35 to 42
- What to Consider: made from sustainable materials, not particularly lightweight, adjustable back strap
- Promising Review: “Had a major crush on these sandals for a long time so when I bought them, I was crossing my fingers hoping they’d turn out to fit perfectly and they did! They were true to size and comfortable from the get go. The leather straps were a bit stiff so I got a blister on my pinky toe in the first few days. But otherwise, they’ve been perfect. Got a lot of compliments about them too.” – Terrie, an Alohas reviewer based in Singapore
“I love my Alohas Marshmallow sandals for a sleek look as the weather warms up, “ says Liv Kappler, commerce editor at PureWow. “I can’t stand super flat or unsupportive sandals, but these have a bit of lift and a cushiony footbed. They are a bit heavy, which doesn’t bother me, but may be too much for someone looking for something lightweight.” The thick sole adds about 1.5 inches to your height and is made from incredibly soft, sustainably-sourced leather over a cushioned foam footbed. The adjustable back strap also helps to secure your foot and customize the fit as needed. “I found the molded footbeds to have excellent arch support, and I like that the heel strap is fully adjustable,” says Sally Kaplan, executive editor at Insider Reviews. “I haven't experienced any pinching or digging with the buckle on the heel strap, which was my biggest concern when I chose this style.”
- Size Range: US 5 to 11
- What to Consider: available in whole sizes only
- Promising Review: “I recently had low back surgery and have to be very particular about my footwear. These are incredibly comfortable and supportive while also being a bit more dressy than flip flops. I did have to size down. I am usually an 8 in sandals, but the 7 fit perfectly.” – Kinsey, an Olukai reviewer
This Hawaii-based brand is one of our absolute favorites for high-quality, waterproof shoes that are also stylish enough to wear out on the town. And the Kīpe‘a ‘Olu sandal is our current top pick for two main reasons: the simple yet elegant stitching on the straps and the extra comfy footbed. The sole on this style is thicker than others by the brand for better support and cushioning, and that bonus stitch detailing makes these sandals appear much more expensive than they really are. Oh, and there is virtually zero break-in time required. Reviewer Juliana writes, “I have high arches, so finding a cute slide sandal that fits my feet that is also comfortable is difficult. From the second I tried these on, I knew they were different. They were immediately a great fit and did not rub while I walked around. No issues with my feet sliding out or feeling too flat footed in them. Overall, great purchase and would recommend!”
- Size Range: US 6 to 12
- What to Consider: available in whole sizes only, memory foam footbed
- Promising Review: “So comfy! I have bad feet and wear mostly orthotic shoes and was able to wear these for hours and still felt great!” – Christine, a DSW reviewer
PureWow assistant editor Steph Meraz owns these cute slides in not just one but three colors and is still raving about them a year after purchasing. “I still stand by my Sunshine slides. They’re so fun and a nice pop of color (of course they also come in white and black). They’re squishy and ridiculously lightweight—so basically the perfect travel sandal to pack in your carry-on. Plus, they have such a thick platform, which keeps your toes and soles away from dirt and lord knows what else living on the sidewalks. My only note is that they can feel like they want to kick off depending on if they sit a bit loose around the straps.” Indeed, some other reviewers disliked that the straps are not adjustable—for narrow feet they may feel too loose, and for wide feet they may feel too snug—and they come in only one width. Then again, almost every review mentions how lush and comfy that memory foam footbed is, so they are definitely worth a try, in our opinion.
- Size Range: US 5 to 12
- What to Consider: all three straps are fully adjustable, 1.5-inch platform, available in whole sizes only, lots of fun color options
- Promising Review: “They are extremely comfortable and stylish. I have a wide foot and usually need to size up. I’m normally a 6 1/2 and ordered the 6 and 7. The 7 was a bit to long for me but the 6 fit perfectly! Definitely recommend!” – Czasa, a Nordstrom reviewer
With more than 4,500 reviews at Nordstrom and a 4.7-star rating, it should come as no surprise that multiple PureWow editors and friends recommended these sandals for their comfort. “These Teva flatforms saw me through last summer and I can’t wait to break them out again this year,” says Sarah Stiefvater, PureWow’s wellness director. “They're cushiony right off the bat, but get even comfier as they mold to your feet the more you wear them. My only complaint would be that the straps are a little bit big/long, but it's easy enough to get a better fit by securing the Velcro tighter.” The supportive platform adds 1.5 inches to your height and the rugged sole provides excellent grip, even on dirt paths or trails. They’re also waterproof, so you can go exploring your local beach or nearby pond without stressing over getting your shoes wet.
- Size Range: US 5 to 12
- What to Consider: ankle strap adds extra stability, lightly padded footbed
- Promising Review: “These are everything I've been looking for in a flat sandal: timeless, feminine style; enough straps to stay on my feet; ample cushioning so that every pebble isn't felt underfoot; and buttery-soft leather. They're so attractive on the foot and have a simple elegance that looks more expensive than their price.” – a Nordstrom reviewer
These ankle-strap sandals have rave reviews on Nordstrom (and a 4.7-star rating, we might add) with shoppers saying they’re comfortable, chic, lightweight and basically everything a gal could ask for in a shoe. One review calls the leather “buttery soft,” and many remarked on how comfy the ankle strap is, with no cutting, digging or blistering right out of the box. The footbed doesn’t have a ton of padding, but combined with a flexible, thick rubber sole, these sandals feel far more supportive than most flat gladiator styles. “Very Comfortable and well made,” writes one review. “I normally don't wear too many flats due to ankle problems, but this sandal fits perfectly and is very comfy.”
- Size Range: US 5 to 12
- What to Consider: made from real leather, may take some time to get used to the footbed, straps are not adjustable
- Promising Review: “I have plantar fasciitis and these shoes were a lifesaver! I own my own clothing boutique and I’m on my feet a lot and these shoes made all the difference to allow me to continue to work.” – Victoria, a Vionic reviewer based in California
Most podiatrists will tell you that flip flops are not good for your feet, but these Vionic sandals may be an acceptable exception. That’s because of the incredibly supportive footbed and the addition of a wide strap at the middle of the foot. In fact, these shoes were designed with direct input and assistance from a team of podiatrists (as all of Vionic’s shoes are), meaning there have been lots of extra steps taken to ensure your feet are well supported. This includes a biomechanically engineered cushy insole that hugs your arches and raised sides that help guide your foot into proper alignment as you walk. One reviewer writes, “I really love these shoes! I discovered that I have a (very painful) bunion on my left foot about a year ago and was given orthotics that fit the shape of my foot. Sadly, I can't wear orthotics with open-toed or open-heeled shoes, so I have been on the search for a pair of sandals that I could wear without causing me pain. I've had these for a few weeks now, and my arches feel very supported! If you aren't used to strong arch support in your shoes, it may take some time to break them in.”
- Size Range: US 5 to 11
- What to Consider: 3.5-inch heel, few color options, run true to size
- Promising Review: “I'm on my feet where I work most of the day, but even at the end of the day, I still almost felt like I was wearing flats. The 1.5" platform offsetting the 3.5" heel certainly helps.” – Laurette, a Vionic reviewer
If you’re looking for a heeled sandal, wedges generally offer better arch support than block or stiletto heels. And this Vionic pair has a whopping 4.9-star rating, with multiple reviewers raving about how comfortable they are despite the 3.5-inch wedge. The Jaylah wedges have the same super supportive, podiatrist-designed footbed as the Marvina flip flops above, to keep your feet feeling as good as they look. And the strappy leather upper offers support from the top. Liz from Mt. Pleasant, SC, writes, “I bought these for a conference (a lot of walking and standing). I have terrible tendonitis so regular heels are a ‘no.’ I wore these for three days straight and my feet never hurt! They are so summery and cute! They did rub a little on my baby toes, but a little Vaseline stopped that. Definitely recommend these shoes!”
- Size Range: US 5 to 12
- What to Consider: great traction, straps are not adjustable
- Promising Review: “Wore them for two weeks in Santorini and Italy. Truly so comfortable and didn’t need to break them in. Highly recommend!” – Macy L., a Sorel reviewer
If leather or faux-leather straps tend to irritate your feet, or you just prefer the flexibility of an elastic strap, these Sorel sandals are a super chic option that also offers lots of support, despite the fairly thin sole. The front strap is indeed made from supple leather to better secure your foot as you walk, but the two crisscrossed straps are stretchy enough to make getting in and out of these sandals incredibly easy but not so stretchy that you’ll find the footbed slapping against your heel. And the sole is made from cushy EVA foam with a special heel cushion for enhanced comfort. One reviewer writes, “Sorel sandals were recommended to me by a friend who wore them for her trip to Europe and I can see why! They are adorable and so, so comfortable. I had foot surgery a few years ago and my left foot swells a lot when I'm super active. These provide the support for my arches, enough room to accommodate the swelling, with the appearance of a casual, cute sandal rather than a clunky orthotic shoe.”
- Size Range: US 5 to 11
- What to Consider: lots of color options, available in whole sizes only
- Promising Review: “These water sandals are so comfortable and durable! I wore them for a week in Puerto Rico and they didn't hurt my feet at all. They were even amazing for walking on sharp rocks. Nicely cushioned and non-slip!” – a DSW reviewer
Candace Davison, VP, editorial at PureWow, originally bought these shoes to use them as water shoes at the beach, but now finds herself wearing them for her regular day to day as well. “I hate water shoes, but stingrays are a problem where I’m from, making them a necessity,” she explains. “Reef Vistas are cushy and waterproof, with thick straps that don’t dig into your skin.” Plus, they don’t look like traditional water shoes, so you really can get away with wearing them all over town. They come with a dual density EVA foam footbed for comfort and support and the back strap is adjustable with a small Velcro patch on the side. Reviews suggest they run true to size, and if you typically wear a half size the Reef website recommends rounding up to the next nearest whole size.
- Size Range: US 4/4.5 to 12/12.5
- What to Consider: available in regular, wide and narrow widths, lots of color and material options
- Promising Review: “Right out of the box, I found these super comfortable and they didn’t need any break-in time at all. In fact, I’ve been wearing my Mayari sandals nonstop for the last week and they are incredibly comfortable.” – Joules of Pocketful of Joules blog
For those who prefer a more fashion-forward silhouette with all the signature comfort of classic Birkenstock sandals, try the Mayari. It has a chic three-strap silhouette that feels dressier than the OG Arizonas, but is made with the sample super-supportive, podiatrist-approved cork and EVA footbed. “I actually need to get a new pair of these because I’ve worn my old ones down to the sole,” says Rachel Gulmi, operations director of branded content for PureWow. (She owned her first pair for about four years, wearing them nearly every day for the first two summers.) “I have wide feet, so strappy sandals are usually not my friend, but these are the best! The adjustable straps let me customize the fit to each foot and can be tightened if/when the leather stretches out a bit. I also love that they’re more dressy than classic Birks, but still casual enough to throw on when running out somewhere quick.” There are also a number of different material options for the upper, including oiled leather, vegan faux-leather and even shearling.
- Size Range: US 5 to 12
- What to Consider: incredibly lightweight, available in whole sizes only, require some adjustment upon putting them on
- Promising Review: “[They] literally feel like nothing. The foamy, non-slippery footbed is cushy yet supportive. And there’s no break-in time, no rubbing on your ankles or arches. Slip them on (you can do it mostly without hands — you just need to pull the back strap over your heel) and you’ll soon forget you’re even wearing shoes.” – Simone Kitchens, senior editor at the Strategist
“I’m not going to lie to you, I only bought these because I saw Mary Kate Olsen wearing them,” admits fashion editor Abby Hepworth. “I had a gift card and already own and love the classic Original Universal sandals and so didn’t know what to get and then voila—my childhood idol led me to these. At first, I was worried they would make my feet look like sausages with the elastic straps, and they do require you to pull and adjust them to get the exact right fit. But once they’re set they look incredibly chic. Add to that the fact that the Voya Infinity swaps out Teva’s usual EVA insole for one made of fabric, which doesn’t make my feet sweat nearly as much, and you’ve got yourself a perfect summer sandal.” Other reviewers agree, these do take some adjusting to get the fit just right, but after the first wear those adjustments should be minimal—the same as doing or undoing a metal buckle.
- Size Range: US 5 to 12
- What to Consider: available in whole sizes only, minimal arch support
- Promising Review: “I’ve worn these flip flops almost daily in the past year. They’ve finally begun to tear where my right big toe goes. They’ve held up well!” – Gab, a Target reviewer
Apparently finding a comfortable sandal for under 25 bucks isn’t just a pipe dream! “I’ve bought these sandals twice now,” says PureWow commerce director Nicole Briese. “They’re basically all I wear in the summer. I have really sensitive skin on my feet and a lot of flip-flops just destroy the top of my foot/create deep cuts—these never do and are so easy to throw on.” The footbed is also slightly padded to keep your feet feeling good for longer than your average minimalist flip-flop. Some reviewers found the straps to be too loose for a narrow foot, while those with wide feet were glad for the extra room.
- Size Range: US 5 to 14
- What to Consider: minimal padding in footbed, lots of color options, run true to size, select colors available in wide widths
- Promising Review: “Super comfortable, perfect size and love the color of the sandals. They are worth every penny,. I wore them around Paris for days and my feet were perfectly fine. They can be dressed up or down and practically can to with any outfit.” - Emmy S., Sam Edelman reviewer
“My feet are so prone to blisters and cuts, literally every summer it’s like breaking in my sandals all over again and my feet are basically covered in bandages from March through May,” says Hepworth. “These Sam Edelman slides are some of the only shoes I’ve ever bought that I could actually wear right out of the box with no breaking in necessary. They also last so long—I’ve had the same gold pair for maybe four or so years now and they’re only just starting to come apart, even though I wear them almost every day during the summer. I will admit, they don’t have a ton of arch support, so if you have difficult feet I’d suggest going with a pair from Vionic or Sorel instead. But for a casual, easy sandal you can depend on day in and day out, it doesn’t get better than these, folks.”
