I Finally Realized Why 'The Waterfront' Star Melissa Benoist Looks So Familiar—And I’m Kicking Myself for Not Seeing It Sooner

It's so obvious

We’ve all had that moment: you’re watching a show, minding your own business, when someone pops up on screen and you’re instantly thinking, Wait…where do I know them from? It’s happened to me more times than I can count—like with Sirens star Milly Alcock, White Lotus’s Aimee Lou Wood or Justine Lupe from Nobody Wants This. And now, it’s happened again—this time while watching Netflix’s latest crime drama The Waterfront.

The new series, which premiered on June 19, 2025, follows the Buckley family, once a powerful dynasty thanks to their grip on the local fishing industry. But the cracks are showing—and fast. One character in particular caught my eye: Bree Buckley, played by Melissa Benoist. She looked so familiar that I had to pause and do an internet search—and once I did, it was like, duh.

In The Waterfront, Benoist takes on the gritty role of Bree, an addict struggling to earn back the trust of her family. But her most iconic role before this? She was literally a superhero. Yep, she starred as Kara Danvers (aka Supergirl) in the long-running series Supergirl, which aired from 2015 to 2021 and started on CBS before moving to The CW for the remainder of its six-season run. She also popped up across the Arrowverse, appearing in DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, Arrow, Batwoman and The Flash.

And let’s not forget her earlier roles. She had a part in the Nicholas Sparks adaptation The Longest Ride and—get ready for the real throwback—she played Marley Rose in seasons four and five of Glee. Initially recurring in season four, she was promoted to series regular the next year but didn’t return for the sixth season due to her Supergirl filming schedule.

So yeah, that’s why she looked so familiar. Mystery solved.
