If there’s one Virgin River character who has grown on us, it’s Muriel. This is, of course, all thanks to Teryl Rothery, who plays the character in Netflix’s Virgin River. Since the 59-year-old actress is expected to reprise her role in seasons four (now streaming on Netflix) and five, we compiled a list of must-know details about Rothery, including where she grew up and what else she’s been in.
The Vancouver-native is a dancer, a radio host and an actress. Rothery knew from a young age that she wanted to pursue a career in the entertainment industry. Her childhood training was focused mainly on dance, which earned her roles in stage productions like Bye Bye Birdie. Rothery received her big acting break when she was cast as Dr. Janet Fraiser in the Stargate SG-1 show.
Rothery plays Muriel in the popular Netflix series. In the first three seasons, the character was pegged as a low-key villain, doubling as the “other woman” in Doc’s (Tim Matheson) life. But now that their relationship is over, she’s become a trustworthy resident in the small town. The fourth seasons picks up right where the previous installment ends, with Hope (Annette O’Toole) recovering from her car accident.
In season 4, Muriel is still mourning the loss of Lilly (Lynda Boyd). When she realizes that Hope is struggling to recover, she goes out of her way to support and comfort her. This may surprise some fans because the characters didn’t get along very well in past seasons. But in the new episodes, their friendship blossoms in a heartwarming way.
In addition to Virgin River, Rothery has an impressive resume. (No, really.) The actress has appeared in countless—we repeat, countless—Hallmark-style television movies, like Heart of a Child, The Man Who Wouldn’t Die, For the Love of Nancy, A Christmas Romance, Badge of Betrayal, I Know What You Did, The Book of Ruth, Amber’s Story, The Wishing Tree, Stop the Wedding, All for Love, Road to Christmas, A Christmas Duet, Holiday Date and Sweet Carolina.
She’s also appeared in multiple TV shows, including Stargate SG-1, Dead Like Me, Martin Mystery, Kyle XY, Smallville, The Guard, Hellcats, The Killing, Supernatural, Cedar Cove, Good Witch, Superbook, The Haunting of Bly Manor and When Calls the Heart. However, her most notable roles are playing Celia Hudson in Nancy Drew, JL in The Good Doctor and Jean Loring in Arrow. Oh, and did we mention Rothery voices Timmy’s mom in The Fairly OddParents film series?
