Taylor Swift Can't Possibly Be That Close to Ethan Hawke

And more of her most baffling wedding guests

Rivaling the Met Gala in both fanfare and fashion, Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce's July 3 wedding at Madison Square Garden (the MET&T Gala, if you will) saw a procession of 1,000+ guests making up the who's who of Hollywood and music. Some A-list attendees were to be expected, of course—this is the world's biggest pop star we're talking about—but as I scrolled through the paparazzi shots and live updates of Tayvis's big day, some of the arrivals left me baffled. Tom Hanks? Jessica Alba? Paul Rudd? And how close could the couple possibly be to Ethan Hawke?

While there is certainly much to be discussed about what was arguably America's own version of a royal wedding, I've been completely consumed by the guest list. I need to know: Are Taylor and Travis actually friends with all these celebrities, or is this the billionaire equivalent of inviting everyone you friended on Facebook after meeting in a bathroom once to your nuptials? It very well may be, considering Swift extended an invite to British host Graham Norton on the fly during a 2025 appearance on his show. "If you're inviting me, it's very big," he replied. Oh, how right he was.

I would bet that some of these stars found their invite as head-scratching as I do—like Hawke, for example. Although everyone's favorite '90s dreamboat did make an appearance in Swift's music video for "Fortnight," he himself told Entertainment Tonight last year that he doubted he'd be seeing the singer tie the knot, joking that he'd be happy enough with an invite to a Chiefs game.

As for Hanks? While it's true that he has publicly interacted with Swift on at least two occasions—once at a fundraiser in 2010 and, most recently, at the 2026 premiere of Toy Story 5, for which Swift wrote an original song—I have to be honest, it doesn't really seem like they run in the same circles. Nor do the likes of Tate McRae and Zadie Smith, but they, too, were inexplicably both in the room (er, arena). Then again, what a power play to extend an invitation to the biggest names in the film, TV, music and literary worlds and, close friendship or not, actually have them show up.

Alas, as more details and confirmed attendees of the star-studded spectacle emerge, the more random the RSVPs become. Here, my ranking of the most "WTF, you guys definitely don't know each other like that" guests of the night.

10. Jennifer Lopez

9. Brad Pitt

8. Tom Hanks

7. Hugh Grant

6. Ethan Hawke

5. Kristin Cavallari

4. Zadie Smith

3. Nelly

2. Avril Lavigne

1. Adam Sandler

Don't get me wrong, if I had the funds, I too would invite everyone I've ever met (or wanted to meet) to my wedding—why not? It obviously made for one heck of a party.
