This Netflix Rom-Com Is the New #3 Movie—and It Has a *Major* Twist

There are few flicks that can genuinely make us laugh out loud, but this brand-new Netflix rom-com is one of them.

Good on Paper, which stars Iliza Shlesinger as a successful—yet lonely—comedian named Andrea Singer, recently premiered on the streaming service, and it’s already claimed the number three spot on Netflix’s list of most-watched movies. (It’s currently ranked behind Ice Road and Fatherhood.)

The semi-predictable story line follows Andrea as she turns her attention to her love life after years of focusing on her career. It all begins when she meets Dennis (Ryan Hansen), a handsome nerd who seems like a total catch.

“He seemed nice, normal—like an accountant who loves missionary,” she says in the clip. And then adds, “In that moment, I didn’t want to be with anyone but him.”

Although her friends aren’t convinced that he’s “the one,” Andrea is determined to get to know him better. “I always respected that you weren’t obsessed with marriage,” her friend says. “It was OK that you hadn’t reached all your goals by the age of 35.” But that’s when the twist hits.

According to the official synopsis, “After years of putting her career first, a stand-up comic meets a guy who seems perfect: smart, nice, successful…and possibly too good to be true.”

Good on Paper also stars Margaret Cho, Tyler Cameron, Taylor Hill, Rebecca Rittenhouse, Matt McGorry, Britney Young, Kimia Behpoornia, Rebekka Johnson, Tess Paras, Rebecca Delgado Smith, Tony Rodriguez, Patrick Daniel and Mav Viola.

In addition to her leading role, Shlesinger (Spenser Confidential) also wrote the script, which is loosely inspired by a true story. The movie was directed by Kimmy Gatewood (GLOW), while Han West (Lemon), David Bernon (Mile 22), Paul Bernon (Drinking Buddies) and Sam Slater (Heart Beats Loud) served as producers.

Good on Paper is now streaming on Netflix, just in time for summer movie nights.
