Confession: I've Never Been a BTS Fan, But Seeing Them Live at the AMAs Changed Everything

Does this mean I'm part of the BTS ARMY?

To say that the 2026 American Music Awards was a night a remember would be an understatement. There was the red carpet. There was the star-studded ceremony. But one moment I wasn't fully prepared for? The audience response to BTS.

Last Thursday, it was revealed that BTS (one of the most famous boy bands ever) would be making a special appearance at the AMAs. Naturally, I was intrigued. After all, I had a ticket to see the AMAs in Las Vegas, and I'd never experienced the K-pop group first-hand.

The AMAs teased on Instagram, "ARMY, get ready!" Get ready? Way to downplay it, AMAs. Prior to Monday's ceremony, BTS hadn't performed at an awards show in a whopping four years. The fact that I was seated in the audience? Just icing on the cake.

Before the show even started, the crowd hype person (yes, that's a thing) mentioned the artists that would be presenting, performing and just plain attending. The crowd went wild for a number of big names (Maluma, Karol G, Sombr). But when BTS was mentioned (and I mean simply mentioned), the audience lost its goddamn mind. The applause was deafening. The screams were piercing. The energy was electric. And the show hadn't even begun yet!

Up first in the awards ceremony? A remote performance from BTS, who is currently doing a stint in Vegas as part of their world tour. The boy band was merely appearing virtually on a screen, and the audience was out of its seats (and out of its minds). To be fair, as a non-ARMY member, I was impressed by the performance (what I could hear of it over the screams anyway). The number was fun, big-budget and it clearly spoke to the souls of those sitting around me.

Then, BTS showed up in person. They presented the award for Best Female R&B Artist to SZA. And while the crowd loved SZA, it was the BTS walk to the stage that received the biggest cheers.

But that's not all, folks...

BTS then took home the awards for Song of the Summer (for "Swim") and Artist of the Year. Cue the mayhem.

I knew BTS was popular, but what I experienced at the AMAs was next level. For those around me, it was a transcendent experience, even before the group showed up.

So, I guess this changes everything. While I don't think I'll be part of the BTS ARMY tomorrow, I will certainly be giving their cannon a closer listen (especially their latest album). Because if they're good enough to provoke that kind of fan response, they're good enough for me.
