You (yes, you dear reader) have chosen the best shower oil this year, and I’m intrigued to see if it’s worth the hype. The Bioderma Atoderm Shower Oil has a cult following, with shoppers praising it for cleansing and nourishing skin. It even has more than 38,000 rave reviews on Amazon alone—but is it actually good? Were those reviews from bots or paid promotion?! I grabbed their largest bottle and tested the viral product to see how well it worked on my skin. Spoiler alert: I’ll never doubt you all again.

What Is Bioderma Shower Oil?

The shower oil promises deep hydration and 24-hour moisture. It has Skin Barrier Therapy technology, featuring ingredients like water, glycerin, mild surfactants, niacinamide and citric acid. It works to cleanse and soften skin, while preventing dryness. The lightweight, non-comedogenic formula can also be used by the entire family, including children and babies.

How to Use Bioderma Shower Oil

The brand recommends wetting your skin before applying the cleansing oil. I started out with adding three pumps onto my body scrubber and working it along my arm. I saw it lather up almost immediately and found it also worked just as well if I was applying it directly on my hand or a wash rag. Now, it doesn’t have a super-rich lather like other body washes I’ve used in the past, however, it still got the job done. I added three more pumps for good measure and realized six was my sweet spot in cleansing my entire body.

Once rinsed, my skin felt silky smooth. The gentle formula didn’t dry out my skin and it maintained moisture even after I stepped out of the shower. The cleansing oil is also great for your face and hands (the bottle label literally says it’s “suitable for frequent handwashing”). Of course, I tested it out on these areas and discovered it was just as nourishing, too. When it comes to the face, it has become a great double-cleansing product to ensure all my makeup is gone.

Formula aside, the scent is very subtle. You have to really press your nose near the shower oil to catch a whiff of the fragrance, which can be a nice bonus for those with sensitive noses. It doesn’t have an out-of-this-world scent, but it smells fresh and clean.

The Bottom Line: Never Underestimate PureWow Readers

Bioderma

After multiple uses, I can see why it’s a hit with our readers. The shower oil is great for those with dry and/or sensitive skin. It cleanses and removes impurities while locking in moisture and softening skin—no greasy residue here. While reading through countless reviews, I noticed some have praised it for being gentle for those with eczema, atopic dermatitis and other skincare conditions. As someone with sensitive skin, I didn’t deal with any irritation or breakouts after using it once (or twice) a day.

The shower oil comes in three sizes, but the largest bottle is the brand’s most popular (and most accessible) for consumers. I was hesitant to pay $34, but found it was worth the splurge. Since I only need about six pumps to cleanse the body, the 33.8 oz will definitely last a long time. The pump dispenser works smoothly, and the clear bottle ensures I’ll use every last drop.

The only cons are the subtle lather and fragrance. I like a richer, thicker texture (with a delicious, invigorating scent to match) but they’re not deal breakers. When NYC is dealing with cold, cold weather, it’s nice to have a body wash that strengthens and moisturizes my skin.

Frequently Asked Questions

How Often Should You Use Shower Oil?

A shower oil is safe to use daily. I used Bioderma’s once (sometimes twice) a day and it worked well for my skin type.

Is Shower Oil Better Than Body Wash?

One is not better than the other. The important thing is looking at the ingredients and finding one that’s best for your skin type and concerns.

Can Bioderma Shower Oil Be Used On the Face?

Yup! The Bioderma Shower Oil can be used for the face, body and hand. I personally used it on my face and found it works as a double cleanser to remove oil, dirt and makeup.
