Is Kevin & Zoe’s Relationship on ‘This Is Us’ Doomed?

Just when it seemed everything was coming together for Kevin (Justin Hartley) and Zoe (Melanie Liburd) on This Is Us, things took a turn and they began discussing, then eschewing, the idea of having children. Ultimately, they committed to each other, but in the season three finale preview, it looks like Kevin might have a change of heart and want to fly solo.

In the finale promo, we see Kevin telling Zoe, “Sometimes people think they know what they want. But things change.” He’s calm, cool and collected, like he’s made up his mind about something. But in the next frame it becomes clear she is definitely not on the same page and Kevin can be seen off in the background processing their conversation.

Now, their discussion could be about many different things. For one, in episode 17, Kevin decided he was all in with Zoe despite the fact that she doesn’t want children. In the finale, he could change his mind and decide he does ultimately want to be a father. Another option? He could suggest in his casual I’m-Kevin-and-I-get-what-I-want way that Zoe might change her mind about becoming a mom down the line.

Perhaps Kevin will tell Zoe he no longer sees a future with her after running into his longtime old flame Sophie (Alexandra Breckenridge) and sending her and her fiance free concert tickets as a “congratulations” gift. In a less likely event, maybe Sophie will break things off with her beau and reach out to Kevin.

The elephant in the room we’re doing our best to avoid here is the one that bears the most emotional weight. What’s something that would upend both Kevin and Zoe that has nothing to do with them? Beth (Susan Kelechi Watson) and Randall (Sterling K. Brown) separating, or even worse, divorcing. Since Randall also mentions resigning in the promo, that’s an option but we doubt it would leave Zoe looking so shook.

It all boils down to one question: Is this the end of Zevin? Maybe. Chrissy Metz exclusively told PureWow recently, “I like him to be single” when asked about her on-screen brother’s relationships (Zoe vs. Sophie). Whether that’s Metz’s personal preference or a hint about what’s to come, we’ll just have to wait and see when This Is Us returns with the season three finale next Tuesday, April 2, at 9 p.m. on NBC.
