‘This Is Us’ Creator Jokes ‘Everyone Dies!’ in Season 3 Finale (and Gives Actual Spoilers)

With two episodes left, This Is Us season three is nearly over. And since we’re not exactly patient, we were thrilled when series creator Dan Fogelman shared hints about what the upcoming finale brings and threw in a couple of jokes.

Fogelman, along with the main cast of the hit NBC series, attended PaleyFest this past weekend and opened up about the finale, calling it “gigantic.” “Obviously there’s a lot of attention on Randall and Beth,” Fogelman specified, adding that the last five minutes of the episode are mind-blowing.

“You’re going to get a lot of answers,” he explained and then, to our horror, joked, “Everyone dies!” Not cool, Dan.

Chrissy Metz, who plays Kate Pearson, revealed that she cried while reading the script for the season three finale, which isn’t necessarily surprising given that every episode makes us cry.

What was surprising is Justin Hartley’s response to the finale script. “They did it to me again!” the IRL Kevin Pearson said. But what could that be?

Since Kevin recently relapsed, he could be headed back to rehab, or, as episode 16 suggested, he could become entangled with Sophie again. Hey, maybe he’ll have another public meltdown or maybe he’ll lose his dad’s necklace again. The possibilities are endless.

As for what the future holds, Fogelman says he’s excited about the season four premiere. He revealed he recently wrote the first episode of the season and parts of those that follow. He calls it an ambitious opening and says he’s as thrilled about the upcoming season as he was about the pilot episode.

“It’s going to be good,” Fogelman assured fans. “The world is gonna expand in an interesting way…we have a plan.”

One of those plans, Fogelman went on to tease, is introducing Rebecca’s father as a prominent figure in the plot. As This Is Us co-showrunner Elizabeth Berger reiterated, “We’re going to get some answers in the future.”

Let’s hope so.
