This week’s installment of This Is Us gave us the backstory we’ve been waiting for: Beth (Susan Kelechi Watson). And now, the 37-year-old actress is opening up about the iconic episode and why she insisted on being her own stunt double.

In a recent interview with People, Watson revealed that dance is a big part of her life, which is why she refused to use a body double in season three, episode 13 of the popular NBC series.

“Dance is so important to me because it’s a way of expression without speaking,” she said.

The episode concluded with Beth breaking into choreography for the first time in years. Although she hadn’t danced in a very long time, the moves came naturally to the This Is Us star.

“It’s so funny what your body remembers and just doesn’t let it go,” she continued.

Watson went on explain how her own experiences relate to the character, adding, “I think for me it’s a more thorough way of expression. I can dance something and people will know exactly how I feel. Things that I can’t even find the words for. I love to be in my skin in that way. For Beth, she was dancing before she could walk, so there’s something about it, it’s innate.”

Similar to Beth, the actress also revealed that her mom brought dance into her life. “My mom said there was never a time when music played that you did not dance. I do that to this day. … I think Beth and I have that in common,” she said. “Her way of even moving through the world started through dance. Not walking, but dancing. That says a lot about your spirit in terms of how she communicates and wants to communicate in her life.”

Take note, Randall. This Is Us returns to NBC on Tuesday, March 5, at 9 p.m.
