‘This Is Us’ Season 3 Finale Promo Teases the Answer to the ‘Her’ Flash-Forward

In season two of This Is Us, Randall (Sterling K. Brown) confounded fans when he told grown-up Tess (Iantha Richardson) that “it’s time to go see her.” And while we assumed Beth (Susan Kelechi Watson) was the “her” they referenced, or maybe Kate (Chrissy Metz), the mystery woman ultimately turned out to be Rebecca (Mandy Moore). The thing is, we still don’t know if she’s sick, estranged or something even more devastating. Well, steel yourselves, This Is Us fans, because the season three finale promo finally offer some answers about the puzzling “her” flash-forward.

In the promo, which debuted after last night’s tearjerker, we see an older bearded Toby (Chris Sullivan) arrive somewhere to meet Randall. Toby’s facial expression looks uncomfortable or upset and Randall’s body language looks sad.

In previous iterations of the “her” flashback, we’ve seen that Toby isn’t wearing a wedding ring and is hesitant to come see Rebecca. Unless he’s someone who removes his jewelry before getting into bed, it appears he and Kate must split in the future and that he feels like it may not make sense for him to come visit his former mother-in-law.

As for Rebecca, the season three finale promo shows her getting into a car accident when the kids are 11-year-olds and Jack (Milo Ventimiglia) is still alive. It looks like she’s admitted to the hospital and Jack and young Randall (Lonnie Chavis) come to visit her. The scene seems out of place—unless it foreshadows a car wreck Rebecca will be in later in life and that’s why Randall, Toby, Tess and Beth are coming to visit her.

If we know anything about This Is Us creator Dan Fogelman, he doesn’t do things just because. And he did recently promise answers in the finale. So, will Rebecca be injured in a car accident that leaves her in a precarious condition? We truly hope not, but that may be the case.

All will be revealed when This Is Us returns next Tuesday, April 2, at 9 p.m. PT/ET on NBC.
